Don't judge a book by it's cover guys. I played the demo of Shaolin Monks, and in my opinion, it's the best thing to come from the Mortal Kombat franchise yet. It's quite fun.

Is it even physically possible to bend at the waist like Liu Kang does there? Midway's animation modellers are up to things again.

Goro can bend however he pleases, he's not human. Liu Kang supposedly is, so I'd appreciate if Midway would at least NOT assume that all gamers are morons and won't notice the details.

Oh wait, it's Mortal Kombat... moving on.

what an unfair world, Beyond good and evil is completely ignored and yet we have a mortal kombat game every now and then

Hey Shaolin Monks is actually good. And I own Beyond Good & Evil. So I don't want to hear it.

That's not really saying very much now is it.

I just can't get excited about this. It doesn't sound like much fun and the art is horrible. They're like, to squarish or something. Like they're action figures. I guess it will be kind of cool to finally find out what happened during MK II, even though the story will be full of retcons.

They need to hire me as part of art direction.

I would build actual sets of these MKII levels, and light them the same way. Digitally capture all the textures and reconstruct that set in the game. I'd get people to dress up in the MK attire, and digitally scan them.

I'd also capture a 360 texture lightmap of the sets, blur them a bit, and apply it to the characters as reflection maps (but extremely subtle) to simulate IBL.

It would look so extremely photorealistic...it would be super sweet. It's what got everybody's attention in the first place. The 3D games must do the same.

That sounds pretty good. Though it sounds like a job for next gen machines to better handle high resolution data like that.

Actually it was pretty much done with The Getaway. And GT4 did it to a large extent.

A lot of Sports games, and even the WWE games do it. The WWE games used referenced photos, I don't think they actually scanned the wrestlers.

I do agree that next gen would better handle it, but it's very possible to do on current gen systems. I'd post pics of great examples of this but I don't want to derail the thread.
Actually I'm just too lazy :P

Another aspect of MK that needs to improve is facial animations. They have to express extreme emotions...mostly pain and anger. It'll help sell each bone crushing attack.

I mean, if his face was normal, you'd think he just fell. But judging from his face, you know he got hurt. Fighting games need to feature this kind of expression, and it's doable on today's systems.
