Most impressive game for a console ever ?

Does anyone think that there is a chance that we might get something like Donkey Kong Country this gen? Something that beat expectations and raises the bar for the next gen? I know HL2 would probably be what most people expect next-gen consoles to be like/beat, but howabout GT4, RE4 or Zelda? Especially Zelda, since we've seen so little of it, does anyone think Nintendo can pull and DK Country on us again?

My picks are a combination of expectations for a system at a time, or what was out there at the time, and if any of 'em still hold up now.

I dunno about ever, but each console this gen has a game that looks beyond what the console should be able to do:

Xbox - Ninja Gaiden
PS2 - GT4
Cube - Resident Evil 4

Snes - DKC

DC - Soul Calibur, Dead of Alive 2, Shenmue.

Xbox - Halo, DOAU, PDO, Ninja Gaiden.

PS2 - GT4, Jak & Daxter series (nº polys on screen)

GC - Rogue Leader, F-Zero GX, RE4.

A huge, coherent world with great physics, digitised sound, incredible atmosphere, and some great emergent behaviour - all on an 8-bit home computer. It's like GTA came a couple of generations early. Only with aliens instead of hookers

Consider me curious as well. I was actually going to come in here and pick Elite for the NES...

Traveller's Tales did a fantastic job on Sonic 3D Blast on the Megadrive in terms of graphics. Sure, they definitely had an helping hand with Aladdin and EWJ being released beforehand showing how to create a huge library of animations and use them effectively, but the game really shined at the end of the Megadrive days.

Plus it had a video at the beginning! Sure, it's made out of 56 colours and makes Sonic look like he's show as hell, but OMG!!1

XBOX:- Riddick & Enclave (still the Xbox texture king) - both from Starbreeze. Nuff said.

It's quite funny now....in that we've never really seen what the Xbox can do bar a few select l33t developers - call it EA syndrome, lowest common dominator - which doesn't bode well for PS3 - because no matter how powerful it is, EA will code games for the first of the next-gen machines which will be Xenon then port upwards.

I think it's easier to think about 8 bit or 16 bit games because at the time, we knew exactly what the console could or couldn't (supposedly) do. Seeing a very old console do something cool is a lot more impressive than seeing a powerful console do something cool.

If all games on PS3 will be made by EA, then it (as well as consumers) will have a lot worse problem then whether or not the games are made for the lowest common denominator.

SNES-Killer Instinct...to be honest this impressed me moreso than DKC because it just seemed so un-doable at the time in terms of Arcade-to-console conversion. But it still it had all of the moves and combos(i believe), had a good framerate, and actually had voices. DKC still counts overall, but technically the "wow" work was done beforehand(pre-rendered "ACM" sprites).

Genesis-Sonic 3/Sonic&Knuckles...I haven't seen/played Batman&Robin or Vectorman etc, so I can't give any perspective on those games.

Playstation-MGS, Tobal 2, Tekken 3, Soul Blade, RRT4, Gran Turismo

Saturn-NiGHTS, VF2, Panzer Dragoon 2, Capcon's 4MB CPS2 games(had RAM help, but eh, arcade pefection at home)

N64-Zelda:OoT, Turok 2/Rogue Squadron(RAM help)

GC-F-Zero GX(haven't played Wind Waker or MP series), RE4 apparently

PS2-GT4 definitely

XBOX-DOA3/Ultimate

It was never released, but considering that was due to a lack of a publisher rather than anything else (the game was completed), Tyrannosaurus Tex on the GameBoy Color has to take the prize:

I remember reading somewhere (Next Gen?) that KI displayed more colors simultaneously than any other SNES game (taking account the graphics mode it was using). Anyway, I'd like to give a special nod to Compile's Space Megaforce (Super Aleste) for possibly being the only SNES shooter with tons of action on-screen & almost no slowdown. Sure the game relied on another co-processor to get the job done, but still ...

Well that's the point. By the time PS3 is released I doubt they'll be any other developer other then EA. :(
