Most redundant rumor ever...

The-magicbox.com recently placed this rumor in their news section:

RUMOR: Nintendo of America is planning to make an announcement for Nintendo DS around the launch time of Sony PSP in US in March 2005.

Now, if I were Nintendo, I'd probably make sure to announce something big around the launch of the PSP. Nintendo and Namco kind of did this with the announcement of Baten Kaitos DS and Xenosaga DS a few hours before the launch of the PSP in Japan.

So, yeah, it's a really stupid rumor, because it's so obvious that Nintendo most likely would have some sort of announcement to make. Sony did all sorts of timed announcements to coincide with Dreamcast stuff back in the day. All in an effort to destroy any momentum the Dreamcast might have had. I'm sure Nintendo will try the same.

This redundant rumor did get me thinking though... what kind of major announcement might Nintendo have regarding the DS?

One thing I'd like to see soon is more game footage and images of some of the heavy hitters in their lineup, like the Namco RPGs, Secret of Mana, FF CC and FF III (which I hope turns out to be a 3D remake and not just a wonderswan port with touch screen menus).

Anyway, I thought the rumor was funny.

It'll probably be an announcement about the Square-Enix/Nintendo collaboration on DS' online infrastructure with Animal Crossing or some other game to highlight what it can do.

That's a good guess. I'm thinking too that it will revolve around the DS Online plan, which seems to have been hinted by Nintendo to be a Nintendo/Square Enix solution.

That'd be cool.

I just hope it's REALLY big because the PSP can technically already go online out of the package (you can actually connect and check to see if Sony has updates).

Except that Baten Kaitos DS and Xenosaga DS were announced over a week ago, not "a few hours" before PSP launch.

This rumor has been posted on the often mocked rumor mill called Spong. According to them, although there are Gameboy related things underway at R&D level, it's nothing to do with that. They speculate it could be Revolution related.

Jan CES - Xenon
Mar - Revolution or big DS announcement
May - PS3 / Revolution and / or early Gameboy next mention

Although I thought there was much more life in the hardware I already own, the end / beginning of console generations rules.

Yes, sorry - Nintendo did announce those games just before their own launch. My bad.

March is awfully close to E3, but I still don't think we'll hear anything Revolution related. After all, magicbox is saying that it's a rumored DS announcement.

So the QMan came up with this? Interesting.

Does anyone have the ability to paraphrase the EGM rumor? I'm curious just what the Qman said about this.

Why is it that companies want to announce/release something to "counter-act" a competitor. Is this some sort of rule in "Business 101"?!

I think it's the most stupid thing you can do, cutting in your own profit. People who buy these kinda products on the day of release have already set their mind on buying it, you won't pursuade them... EVER!!

Most of the time these guys(/girls) have just enough money to buy this plus an additional game or controller. And 99.99% of them won't think "Hey, there's the new Zelda. Fuck the PS2, let me get Zelda instead". Same with other releases.

Just spill your guts as soon as possible for the people who might actually buy it, morons

It's not for the people who are thinking "I AM BUYING A PSP TODAY!!" It's for the people who are thinking "PSP? Never heard of it, but it looks interesting", or the people who are thinking "I've got a DS, but that PSP sure looks tempting", or even people who think "SHIT PSP supply is low, but I've got an urge to splurge!"

EDIT: High profile news articles about the PSP launch might include a paragraph like "In response, competitor Nintendo today announced Sliced Bread for their Nintendo DS unit."

QMan's rumors in the latest issue of EGM are on this board somewhere... I'm just too lazy to look... but it's something like: Big Nintendo DS announcement around the lauch date of PSP... and it could shock you!!!! or some bullshit like that.

Someone mentioned an early Gameboy Next announcement? Get real. An announcement of a new Nintendo related handheld machine would discourage both consumers... and of course... eventually... sales.

Thinking would go along the lines of: Why do I need to buy a DS if the GBNext is coming out in a year?

If we are to see anything Nintendo related with the GBNext... I imagine we'll see it just as close to launch date as we did with the DS and this year's E3.

Actually as opposed to an announcement I anticipate nintenod's first online offering for the DS, even if paltry, to release just before the PSP

haha that "pikachu gamecube" looks so much better than the pikachu 64, which is an abomination. :lol

I agree with you.
In this case it's different, I love Nintendo but really they have to assure there fan base.
Look at the damn PSP it's gorgeous in design and more gorgeous on the graphics front.
PSP does look like the future in portable games. While it's sad to say the ds seems graphically more of a portable relic. I am a videogame fan to the fullest and choose no allegiance to any system or company solely. The fact is I'm buying both products I appreciate the ds's goal of innovation. But side to side it's not a fair competition.
What's the PSP gonna be $200 dollars. It looks a whole lot more than 50 dollars better.
I am hyped for both but only the psp may have that "this generation feel".

Generation next is approaching faster than I'd like it to.
So soon they will both not look as pretty.
If Nintendo brings out game boys successor to soon, then that would make the ds irrelevant because it's no longer the new thing. Causing anger amongst the casual consumer as well as there fans base. For having to shell out money for another piece of hardware.

It's the same as Nintendo shouting warnings off the roof top, screaming full blast about an extremely powerful enemy invasion on their territory!!!!!
Nintendo has knocked all portable contenders out of the ring with a flaming tiger uppercut in the past. This time it's different, sweat is on the brow, their exec's pores have sprung a leak.

The 800 pound gorilla.
A juggernaut company that snatched the plate and crown in the home console market could possibly make this Nintendo’s last stand. They may just become more obscure in the minds of my fellow Americans and that’s a sad thing. But it's too early to poor a 40 out in Nintendo’s name.

This my friends/colleague's/ and / asscociates, is......
