MOTHER 1+2+3 Goes Out Of Beta Today! (Fan-Made Wii Compilation Trilogy)

DISCLAIMER: The NeoGAF TOS clearly states the following.
D. Emulation/Piracy

The topics of emulation and piracy in the context of the technical nature of emulators and ROM images, hardware modification technology, as well as their effect on the industry as a political topic are deemed to be generally acceptable.

Linking to pirate download sites, directions on how to get pirated software to work, reviews or impressions of pirated software, and livestreams of pirated software play are all strictly prohibited.

We are talking about an emulator wrapper that doesn't come with ROMs here that uses your own personally dumped and patched ROMs from your own carts. Please do not bring up stuff like where to get ROMs of Earthbound, specially since it's being sold on Wii U right now. That being said, let's talk Mother!

Marcel Oliveira has been working on a Wii game to celebrate Mother's 25th. It is a compilation trilogy not unlike Super Mario All-Stars which features a game-like menu in which to boot up the games. I downloaded it, but haven't installed it yet. Indeed, there are no ROMs in the package. Doesn't it look cool?

Here's the launch trailer of the menu in action.

Finally, you can download a nice boxart for it here if you want to put it on the shelf. So, anyone else think this is pretty cool?

My heart skipped a beat reading that title

Mine did too! I thought it would never get out of beta yet here we are. Unlike the beta release, this one uses the Famicom, Super Famicom, and GBA versions of the games; the prior one used 3 and the GBA compilation of the first 2 instead.

There are like four people in the world who actually do this.

More than that, and numbers are pretty much irrelevant anyway. Same thing goes for PPSSPP/Dolphin threads and the like. There are legitimate purposes, leave it at that.

Strange thing, I was actually talking to a friend about importing Mother 3 the other day.

I really like what they were trying to do with the UI, because it's incredibly creative and definitely kept the Mother vibe through and through, but between the many intro logos and warnings, the battle text when selecting a game, it feels more like a chore to get from the bootscreen into a game. To me, it really feels like something that's nice to see once and then becomes a hindrance.

With that said, I'm happy that the option for something like this exists. The more ways to get the Mother trilogy out there, the better.

Nintendo is unable to bring this to europe. I would so dip into this for 3ds. Whats the matter nintendo? You would rather bring another batch of stupid mario games(i hate the wii/u/2d-titles of mario but iam a big fan of the 3d games these days) than actually release something useful to please the fans....

Hey now, there's no reason to bash Mario or other franchises just because the game you want doesn't come in you territory. The USA never got Kuru Kuru Kururin, but most of us didn't wish a pox on Metroid.

It's a shame that it only works with the GBA version(s) of Mother 1 & 2, since their emulation isn't perfect from what I heard.

With all due respect to OP, the sooner this thread gets locked, the better. Emulation and ROMs are part of the problem.

Mother 1+2 are a bit of a catch 22 from a legitimate use standpoint:
- if you go with the GBA version, you won't find a fan translation in English as there's already an official translation and dumping it would constitute infringement I guess. Last time I checked there was no full fan translation in English for Mother 1+2.

- if you go with the original versions, the intersection of people who own an FC copy of Mother, a copy of Earthbound and the means to dump FC and SNES games seems really small. I'm not saying they don't exist obviously as I'm the first guy to be annoyed when people think that because I'm playing fan translations, I've pirated the games but still.

I only own the GBA games so I'm SOL TBH.

Utterly disagreed. But thanks for the backseat modding.

Edit: that's such a terrible argument when applied to Mother, a series that had ONE entry out of 3 that was actually localized and released. Mother is like Fire Emblem 10-15 years ago: a good part of the series popularity hinges on fans doing what the publisher won't.

What problem? Why lock the thread?
Can't people talk about this really swell thing someone made due to their love of the series?

What are you talking about?

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I'm trying it now, and there seems to be no way to change it to 4:3. Do you really have to play the first two stretched?

And the intro isn't skipable (and why leave that Wiimote warning screen in too?), lots of little things...

There was never a console version of Mother 3. Good luck timing your attacks with dodgy emulation speed.
I was obviously talking about the console builds of the first 2 games. As for the performance of 3, try it out and let us know!

Good that there's no way to change the aspect; Wii can output only so many pixels so why waste them rendering black bars? Just like VC, change the aspect on your display.

You might want to be careful when surfing GAF, otherwise you might stumble on the huge threads for emulators - there are lots and lots of them! -, fan translations - we love those! -, homebrew - what's cooler than messing around with your hardware? - and other things that will leave you behind in disgust.

It's really mind boggling why Nintendo doesn't like to cater to fans. How is this possible!?

What's the song in the main, main menu? The one with "MOTHER 1+2+3"?

I guess part of the problem is that there already is a legal and easy way of buying Mother 2/Earthbound.

There are also infinite numbers of illegal and easy ways of playing Earthbound for free--and there were long before there was a legal and easy way to buy it--so the idea that this scaffolding launcher is going to somehow turn law-abiding citizens into junkie pirates looking for a fix is sort of mental.

But this wrapper is the gateway drug, soon enough they'll be on the street corner doing anything for the next rom.

How can one man single handedly put out this while Nintendo and its 3/4k~ish developers can't release more than 2 NES games on the Wii U VC per week, announcing the GBA games and skipping the N64 ones?
Still don't compute in my mind, despite having done this topic already 2 or 3 times and finding out there some very good arguments.

Also yeah I know how, he probably hacked the Super Mario Collection "game".

I was about to ask if it could boot the legit VC copy of Earthbound in addition to the other two ROMs, but then I remembered, there is no legit VC copy of Earthbound on Wii, only Wii U.

I think one of the many reasons they didn't release it on Wii VC is because they wanted to charge more than 8 USD for it without looking like liars. That being said, I really wish it would have hit the Wii as well, even at the same 10 USD price.

Which was pointed out in the OP.

I just meant that's why some might be bothered by this, I know that a lot of fans legally own the carts and that this existing won't make people rush to pirate them, espacially since the Snes copy of earthbound is easy to find online as a rom and doesn't even need anything done to it to be played.
I just hope Nintendo releases Mother 1+3 soon, I mean fans have already translated it for them and I'm sure they have no problems giving the translation to Nintendo. Plus the Wii U is supposed to get GBA games soon, it would do wonders to get Mother 3 out with its launch.

Was the English version of 1 done by fans? I could have sworn that Nintendo made the translation, but simply never released the game.
