Was the English version of 1 done by fans? I could have sworn that Nintendo made the translation, but simply never released the game.

It was Nintendo's translation. People were skeptical until the Japanese release of 1+2 where it had stuff like the run button and the same censorship on enemies and such from the prototype localization.

Some old arcade games have already been lost forever. Emulation and ROMs are exactly whats needed to preserve older video games.

Oké, so I've never played any of the Mother (earthbound) games before. Ik keep hearing and reading people rant about this, as if it's the next coming of Christ.

Seriously, how good is this series? And should I give it a go? Mind you, I don't have loads and loads of time to play games these days sadly enough. So I don't want to put in any time into rpg's that i'm gonna give up on, on quick notice.

The first two are kind of a slog if RPGs aren't your thing. 3 respects the player's time a lot better, probably by virtue of being a portable game. You lose a lot if you don't play Earthbound before Mother 3 though.
