Motorola Announces “Project Ara,” a modular phone hardware platform

Motorola has announced a free, open hardware platform for smartphones called "Project Ara." The goal is to create a modular smartphone that would allow users to swap hardware components at will. Motorola says it wants to "do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software: create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem, lower the barriers to entry, increase the pace of innovation, and substantially compress development timelines."

Dat fragmentation!

Motorola is teaming up with Phonebloks, a company with a similar idea, to make this a reality. Motorola is letting enthusiasts sign up to be "Ara Scout." Scouts are interested members of the community who can give feedback and share ideas about the design. The most active members will get free devices when Project Ara launches, which Motorola says should be about a year from now.

Good luck with that.

So crazy, especially because everyone was claiming the lego phone kickstarter from a month or so ago was impossible. If anyone can pull it off it's google.

Imagine dropping one.

Put a case on it.

This has such huge potential, imagine buying a ready made high spec phone but then a year later, instead of upgrading, just update the CPU and ram. Or, if your screen breaks, instead of having to but a new phone, just swap out the screen.

The key is, I think, to make the modules as cheap as possible enable people to buy and swap out plenty of parts.

The ara and what was described of phonebloks are not the same. Phonebloks described universal connectors which you could arbitrarily place components around on the phone board, this phone is basically predefined with different components interchanging in predefined spots

To be sincere i thought that phoneblock was impossible but i'm intrigued a lot with the possibilities the thing had.
Now this makes me very happy.
