Shits hard on the entire franchise.

Recently? The Grey. By the end of the film I just wanted to leave the theater. It was torture. Not in the way they intended either. Probably one of the very few films I wanted to actually walk out of the theater as it went on.

Such a dull, joyless film that sticks too closely to Richard Donner's film, flaws and all.

Also:

Pixar's first dud. Very demoralizing to watch.

Ugh. This fucking movie. Every single bit of it deserves to go into the fire. I wish I could meet the writers and tell them 'fuck you' to their faces. So easy to make a post Judgment Day movie and they fucked it up. Jesus.

If you expected that movie to be good, then it is your own fault. I expected it to be bad and it exceeded my expectations and became a wonderful cinema experience where I was laughing with an audience who obviously felt like the movie was similarly ridiculous.

How am I the first to say this?

So much this, I think the film made me depressed for a couple of days afterward. That Back to the Future Gif about how Spider-Man 3 made the other Spider-Man movies worse afterwards is absolutely true.

Uh, let's see, here are some movies from just last year that I had high hopes for that ended up being mediocre or terrible:

A Dangerous Method
The Descendants
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Hugo
Martha Marcy May Marlene
Meek's Cutoff
Midnight in Paris
Pina
Shame
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
We Need to Talk About Kevin
Young Adult

I am not going to comment about the rest because I can see why other may not like them to some degree but can you please explain why you were disappointed in these two?

The concept art gave me hope.

I'm wondering, the people that find The Grey disappointing, is it because you expected Taken with wolves? I know that's what the promotional materials hyped up as it was coming out. But I was surprised, pleasantly so, that it wasn't just Taken with wolves. There was a lot more to it and I found it refreshing. I guess that ending is definitely polarizing. The friend I saw it with absolutely hated the ending, but it fit perfectly with everything that lead up to that moment.

There was a particular moment in A Knight's Tale which really excited me but then blew it completely.
Heath Ledger's character goes to Main Female Love Interest and announces he will win the next jousting tournament in her honor. She says that all the knights pledge to win for her, but they are actually winning for themselves. She says if he really lover her, he will lose for her. Heath Ledger agrees. Meanwhile, all of Heath Ledger's friends are at a bar, betting all of their collective money on Heath Ledger to win.

Damn, this is a good set up, I thought to myself. I honestly had no idea how they were going to get themselves out this situation and I was completely enthralled in the movie.

BUT, just before Heath Ledger's character begins the joust, like he's in armor and on his horse and everything, she comes up to him and says nevermind, you don't really need to lose for me after all. It's enough that you thought about it. What a fucking cop out. Never forgave his movie.[/rant]

Truly a movie of the fray, wading between being an okay film and an absolute atrocity. It's a character study, without any study. The atmosphere and attempted nihilistic attitude set up such a strong metaphorical theme that is torn down piece by piece by the cringe-worthy dialogue, awkward pacing, and cornball emotional outbursts. The wolves not only look terrible, but behave in such an illogical manner that they might as well have been designed by J.J Abrams. Oh and then there's the ending.
U watched past the credits, right?

Quantum of Solace

Casino Royale was sensational, my favorite Bond movie, so I was really excited. Especially because the movie was picking up from where CR left off.

But it was decent, at best.

Up

'Yey, another Pixar heavily praised movie!!' Damn, I really didn't like it. I only enjoyed the first 20 minutes. The rest is just meh.

Iron Man 2

Complete letdown, unworthy sequel.

My memory is not exact but he lost several matches and took a beating before she told him to win for her.

Sure.

I will just quote myself from the Hugo thread:
It's great to see Scorsese spill out his love and admiration for film on screen. Every scene that focused on the history stuff and not on the actual plot was magical. It's was, like, inspirational to watch. There's one scene in particular - a flashblack where we see Melies creating his films - where I was just enamored. Every time a character talked about old movies or any time they showed clips from old movies, I had a huge smile on my face. I love that kind of stuff, and I love that Scorsese loves it, and I love that he loved it enough to create a movie about it.

That said, Hugo is essentially a brief film history lesson wrapped up in a predictable family story. Not one of Scorsese's best.
This is one of the better films on my list, I'll admit, though I think the overall story prevents it from being great.

As for TTSS, I just thought it was boring. That probably sounds like a copout for actual criticism, but hey. I'll admit that it's quite well directed and of course the performances are fine, but the slow-burning plot and lack of substantial characterization just left me mostly uninterested.

Iron-Man 2 was really disappointing, but Spider-Man 3 was just a straight kick to the balls. So for that alone I have to give Iron-Man 2 some credit, as it could have been much worse.

The Matrix 2 is one of the most disappointing to me. Matrix 3 is even worse, but I was expecting it at that point.

Stuff like X-Men 3 and Terminator 4 were turds, but you could totally see those coming.

Quit winking at me and trying to be funny. Just work on being a decent action movie then you can be sly.

Who the fuck are all these b-characters and why all the side plots? I'm not watching this movie so I can see how Bai Ling's day is going.

X-Men 3 - It had a lot of potential, and even introduced some great scenes and stories. But the execution, and the followthrough on a few of those choices were absolutely fuckterrible.

Hidden Fortress - It was included in the Akira Kurosawa four pack from Criterion awhile ago, and I don't care how much people read Star Wars into it- it's plodding, the definition of boredom beside one scene, and I almost walked away from it. Gave my copy away it was so awful.

Inception - I bought into the chance we'd get another Memento, seeing as it was Nolan and dreams. And I love his filmography. Not even close.

Lake Eden - Incredible, intense, taut horror if you'd never once seen one hundred other movies with the same plot. I was promised original and daring, and was given genre formula.

All The Boys Love Mandy Lane - See above.

Brazil - Maybe I wasn't in the right mood, but it really didn't gel with me, despite dystopia and absurd surrealism being two of my favorite concepts.

Naked Lunch - See above.

Scanners - I was used to creepy, subversive, disorienting Cronenberg. This film plays like some bastard child of The Brood and Robocop, seriously terrible in every way.

Scream 3 - I'm young enough to grow up with them, and this was/is the Alien 3 of the series.

Nappucino, I get Aliens, but yes I do think you're insane otherwise.

I know, I know...

But I couldn't help but feel Forrest Gump was trying to hard to manipulate me (and I always react negatively to that.)

Similarly I felt like moments of Shawshank were being heavy handed.

Neither movies are really "bad" but I went in with such high expectations that they disappointed me. Possibly because they couldn't have lived up to my expectations. It is hard to say.

I felt Taken had a lot of potential it just didn't live up to. I enjoyed the brief moments of bad assery (
shooting Jean-Claude's wife to name one
) we see from Mills, but the pacing was way off. Not to mention the actress that played Kim could NOT be seventeen. Also, wtf was up with that car chase? At night, in the biggest construction site ever. What could they have possibly be building that, that entire chase could take place within that area.

Just to be nitpicky ... in that chase scene there's some mistakes with the bullet holes. Some disappear. I really did enjoy Taken.

How am I the first to say this?
I saw the thread title and this was the first movie I thought of so I'm with you. Especially coming off of a great second movie. What a letdown.

Some other disappointments of mine...

X-Men 3- Another movie that suffered after an awesome second movie. If I remember right it was rushed into production to beat Superman Returns to theaters and it showed. I didn't totally hate it, but a letdown nonetheless.

The Expendables- Action stars from movies when I was coming up together with more recent stars like Statham in one movie. How could it go wrong? But I really didn't dig it at all. Watched it once and never felt compelled to watch it again.

Dominion: Prequel To The Exorcist- The original Exorcist movie had more tension/fear factor in its pinky than the whole body of this movie. Another movie I watched once and never returned.

Daredevil- This character is probably in my favorite 5 superheroes ever. A blind lawyer by day/vigilante by night. I remember the director talking the talk about how he was a big fan and other reassuring things. I thought casting Ben Affleck as Daredevil and Michael Clark Duncan as Kingpin were good choices. But the film was disappointing for sure.

Those are some off the top of my head...

edit: Actually, I would say both of those movies are closer to mediocre than bad. They're crowdpleasers. I was probably fond of them both at a point, but now I'm just 'eh.'

The Expendables.

After Rambo (4) I had faith in Stallone especially with the cast he'd gathered. The result was shit though. Terrible movie. I really have nothing good to say it about it. Well the part with the shotgun was alright.

How could The Dark Knight let anyone down? That movie was soooo solid, and was so much better than BB.

I thought it was a let down at my first view, and I also thought BB was better.

But then I watched it again, and again..... it became one of the best movies I've ever seen.

I felt the same way. The movie didn't even have much in the way of actual action scenes. What they did have felt almost forced ... and I just couldn't not see Batista.

Of all the horrible things one could say about this movie, and there's a LOT, one thing stuck out for me. Odd I know, but it bugged the hell out of me that we were expected to believe the Indiana Jones universe had both a Jesus (which means there's a god ... that made us in his image as the story goes) and inter-dimensional aliens that look nothing like us and are far more advanced.

So true.

Brandon Routh had tons of potential (distracting contact lenses aside), and he really looked the part, but the movie was just so forgettable. I barely remember it exists.
