Super Mario Bros the film

Everyone seems to hate it and mock it....I think the way it adapted the game was brilliant, and overall very fun. I want a sequel. :(
I love it too. :D Bob Hoskins was great as Mario and Samantha Mathis was freakin adorable in SMB.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Most people around here think this is the greatest western of the decade. Also, many people in this forum splooge over In Bruges too.

I'm an amateur Lynch fan: Is Lost Highway worth watching? Y/N. I've still got time to watch a movie tonight.

And Assassination of Jesse James is fucking awesome, right up there with The Proposition as far as the revival westerns go.

Such an awesome flick. :D

Yeah it is but I think some things feel dated.

My top 5 go like this:
1. Wild at Heart (I don't think too many others consider this to be their favorite)
2. Blue Velvet
3. The Elephant Man (I used to rent this from the library all the time when I was a kiddo)
4. Muholland Drive
5. Eraserhead

I don't know a single person who likes this movie. The cinematography alone is worth a watch. A great story and well told.

I haven't seen the Village yet actually. I might watch it on Demand someday over at a friend's house. I need to check out Lady in the Water too I suppose since this thread turned into a M Night guilty pleasure thread somehow.

I think many people saw The Village with incredibly misguided expectations. The film was marketed as a horror film, while in reality it was a romantic drama with some suspense elements.

Children of Men.

WHY AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT LOVES HOW GOOD THIS MOVIE IS?!

Also taxi Driver.

God damn the people I know suck so much ass when it comes to movies. *sigh*

I meant among my circle of friends. I'm aware of the popularity on GAF for both films.

I understand that you're half joking and Children of Men is almost universally acclaimed, but seriously, that movie had me crying like a little bitch toward the end, and I couldn't get it out of my head for days. It changed my entire perspective on shit. And yet of all the people I've recommended it to, every single one hated it, usually complaining about its lack of resolve or proper climax or the ambiguity about the human project; obviously, all those complaints miss the point profoundly.

Michael Clayton is awesome, actually a fair number of those films are awesome.

Ahh yes, I forgot about this one...I also enjoy it. Although I admit the final battle was utter shit. Everything before that was quite entertaining!

I'm actually not joking at all. My close friends and family didn't think much of those movies at all.

Deep Impact.
I like how the movie shows the reactions of the population, and not only the adventures of the guys sent in space to save the world...

Daredevil
Looks like a (relatively) low budget movie, but the main character is not the usual idealistic hero (nor the usual nihilistic anti-hero), the bad guys are good, the charater's powers are nicely done.

I liked that one movie with that moron where he's injected with animal sperm or something and turns into a freak monster and gets hunted down by the townsfolk.
The Animal?

Not sure about GAFs opinion, but I remember City of Men (Cidade dos Homens) was critically panned in the reviews I read, and many of my friends who I took to see it didn't enjoy it either. The main complaints being "it's not as good as City of God" and that there was too much focus on the lives of Ace and Laranjinha and not enough on the gang violence of Rio's Favella's - and imo, anyone making that complaint has entirely missed the point. Yes, the two lads are surrounded by violence and death, but it has become a part of everyday life and the focus on events that might seem trivial to some viewers is a direct result of the boys need to escape, their desire to make somthing of themselves. In that way it's like City of God, while much of the movie centers on the gang culture and the slums of Brazil, the focus is on Rocket and his desire to escape the slums and make somthing of his life.

Dune (not the mini series)

I LOVE Dune and am consistantly amazed by how much it gets shat upon.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
The Bourne Ultimatum
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
Gone Baby Gone
House of Flying Daggers
In Bruges
Into the Wild
Juno
Michael Clayton
Mr. Brooks
Nothing But the Truth
Revolutionary Road
Sin City
The Incredible Hulk
Underworld (just the original)

hmm... I'm sure there's more, but the group I go with isn't exactly a sophisticated bunch. I still love 'em, and that's all that's important.
You need MORE friends. Don't get rid of the current ones, but seriously, who can hate Sin City AND Assassination of JJ? Can't be done. I can understand someone hating one or the other, but both? No way.

City of Men was good. Fuck the haters.

Ravenous.jpg

One of the coolest (and perhaps creepiest) flicks ever made. It's pure, unadulterated win.

Yes, my friends use this as exhibit A as to why I'm never allowed to pick a movie for the gang.

Oliver Stone's Alexander is quite probably the best ancient Greek-themed movie I have ever seen, and a very, very good movie overall. I've seen the movie several times (first in theaters, then in the extended DVD version "Alexander Revisited"), and loved it both times. Apart from the slight divergence into conspiracy theorizing near the end, it's just an amazing, amazing movie... I really don't know why so many people hated it. Is it because of the gay themes? But that was common in Ancient Greece, and Alexander almost certainly had male lover(s), so it fits fine (and no, I'm not gay)... is it because of the fact that it's not quite "Hollywood"? I'd put that as part of it, for sure. It's not your conventional Hollywood movie, certainly.

Troy was your conventional Hollywood movie about ancient Greece. And I thought that that movie wasn't very good at all, mediocre at best and pretty poor at worst... it just couldn't decide what it wanted to be ("realistic" or following the myths), and it didn't work as a result.

I mean, stuff like Clash of the Titans is great fun, but I wouldn't put it above Alexander.

... So yeah, I think that fits this thread. :)
