gotta research surround sound for something and was wondering what movies really use surround sound well...

please disregard quality of movie. I need to watch a movie that uses surround well and significantly rather than a movie thats just good.

so...suggestions and as many as possible, so hopefully some suggestions might be movies in my collection, and i wont have to spend money at blockbuster

be advised, I do not have a surround set up of my own which is why im asking....im gonna be researching this stuff in a surround studio.

War movies (Savong Private Ryan - Pearl Harbour - Black Hawk Down) have really great sound, LotR trilogy as well.

really, the star wars movies. they probably have some of the most active all around sound stages and most dynamic ranges (especially in the rear stage) that is is almost a text book instruction on how to do surround right (though in some cases how not to do surround also).

so thats it..

star wars, war movies, lotr trilogy...

all of which i do not have in my collection YET.....

great.

there must be more!

The best I've ever heard by FAR--

A treat all the way around. The opening of the film shows off the potential subtlety of 5.1, with the creaking of the ship, the bells ringing, the sound of the ocean, etc.

...and when the first battle comes--YOUR JAW WILL FUCKING DROP.

What movies do you have anyway?

I've always been a fan of Air Force One's audio. Star Wars Ep1 and Ep2 have great audio, and Saving Private Ryan is always a favorite. X-Men and X2 have some spots that utilize surround sound really well.

Winner. This is easily the best sound I've heard in a movie. Both the design and implementation of it was near flawless.

I second this. Another vote for:

Saving Private Ryan
Star Wars movies
Brotherhood of the Wolf
The Matrix
Gladiator

the first matrix movie is pretty good.

fifth element is pretty good.

master and commander is right up there with Saving Private Ryan, Star Wars, and LOTR. No question about it.

gladiator is ok also (though not in there with the elite in the above paragraph).

if you want an odd one from out of nowhere, try catching the HD broadcast (aka 5.1 broadcast) of the first episode of Lost on ABC. I couldn't believe I was watching a television show. Easily the greatest 5.1 soundtrack I have ever heard on network TV (that wasn't a theatrical movie). the other episodes of the series are great, but the first one sonically blew me away.

will add more as I think of them.

Toy Story 2 (particularly the opening scene)
Fight Club
Blade (the opening in the club)
The Haunting (awesome sound, :/ movie)
Minority Report (great bass)

First time I saw Master and Commander I watched it on a plane and thought it was very boring I was falling asleep.

As everyone was raving about how great it was I rewatched it at home and loved every minute of it the sound is a major part of the film. The sound is that good, without a system the movie is hardle worth watching. With one it rocks.

Heat and Colateral have some of the best gunfire sounds ever! Both movies however suffer from lame ass endings.

Your Jurrasic parks are good for when you feel like blowing your ears in.

Anything from Pixar tends to rock! The bass when the little girl giggles in Monsters Inc is unreal. One of my favorties scenes to wow my buddies.

The first movie I watched years ago with surround sound was Days of Thunder with Tom Cruise. The movie was OK at best, but I thought it had great sound.

there is being a sheep, and then there is just owning quality movies.

Are you guys sure about the Matrix? It's been awhile since I've viewed it, but I don't recall it having great use of discrete surround sound channels. There's another good scene that I just remembered but I can't think of the movie. It's based off a Steven King novel, set in the woods, about aliens landing, has Morgan Freeman in it... Can't think of it, but there's one scene where they use surround sound really well. Another scene that just came to mind is one from Dungeons and Dragons. Terrible movie, but there was one point where an arrow was fired and it was so clean and crisp when it came from behind that I actually turned around to see what it was before I realized it was the movie. It might be best instead of just naming movies but actually name specific scenes in the movie.

matrix has some nice effects to it.. some nice directional audio and whatnot.. not OMFGAMAZING like Star Wars or LOTR, but pretty good. actually the coolest thing about matrix is its lack of sound in one scene.. right before neo jacks in for the first time after being freed, and there is music, and electronic humming, and just very busy in general, and once he jacks in to the white room everything is just dead silent.. gotta love digital sound :)

Twister sounds really good, but boy does it suck as a movie.
in true irony, I hate the soundtrack of twister from a sound mixing standpoint but thoroughly enjoy the movie as a guilty pleasure. I actually think I'm going to have some steak and eggs when I get home tonight!!!
