What format and settings are you encoding your music to?

My math is actually fuzzy. It's closer to about 300 song. A lot of my songs are 128bps. Right now, my 256mb can hold about 70 songs.

Hahaha. It's a great song, though. It can cheer up even the most depressed individual.

PSP isnt a competitor to the ipod. just like playstation is never gonna go away, ipod is never gonna go away. no matter what.
if actual audio quality and overall engineering was so important, the irivers and xens would be the best selling players. sony lost the portable audio battle, they can only hope to be a distant second or third, no matter what they do.

Hey, Alpha did you post your impressions of the PSP? I must have missed it, can you link me to it?

No I never posted them. I didn't think it'd be very necessary since a number of others have posted their impressions. Plus that PSP thread is so damn enormous, it'd just get lost. I will say that I absolutely love my PSP and it is 100% defect free.

Nice, I'm hoping my PSP doesn't have any problems.

You know what the irony of all this is? I hate Sony, love my iPod.......... but I REALLY want one of those little fuckers. It's the portable video + gaming that really appeals to me. And it's deadsexy too :D

I knew you were a deep down PSP lover.

Don't forget, the PSP has gapless playback, something that Apple has never gotten right in all the revisions of the iPod...

This thread has NOTHING to do with capacity. It's just saying the PSP has better sound quality than the iPod (at least, 3G). We're not saying one's better than the other, or anything like that, just the sound.

You people are so defensive! :p

While on sound quality, I noticed my MD on LP4 sounded better than an iPod, but only slightly. Even then, pretty pathetic IMO.

LP4 stinks :p
It sounds even worse than FM radio quality to me :p

LP2 is nice though.
And SP on my old Sharp MD (optically transfered tracks) blows away my iPod. Mmm...Sharp MDs have really nice, punchy bass. The iPod is a little flat.

Nevertheless, no complaints here with the iPod.
I don't expect, nor care, for opera-house quality with my iPod.

Well the problem I see it and people keep bringing up capacity as a defense for Apple is:

IPods main function is MP3 Playback.

PSP's main function is video games. MP3 playback is superior on PSP. Something isn't right here. :lol

the only thing the ipod fails at is proper bass..no matter what setting you have the bass is just not there. Even my $75 mp3 player sounds better than the ipod.

ipod doesnt have the best audio quality though, that's a pretty well known fact. xen has the best output quality.
and sony being an electronics giant, obviously the PSP would have a better amplifier in it...i assumed as much.

You're comparing LP4 tracks to what on the iPod? LP4 is decent using stock headphones and/or CD-quality source material. Transcoding tracks at "normal" bitrates is criminal.

Alpha, PSP does have an equaliser of sorts. Press the 'music note' button and it'll cycle through about 5 different presets (pops, jazz, classical, that kind of stuff).

You know about holding the screen brightness button down to turn the screen off, right?

if sony could release a powered USB pack HDD for about 19800 yen, they could potentially cause some issues for the ipod. They could then have the mp3 play back and the movie player on a nice screen. I'm sure this must have crossed sony's mind...

I'd be in there in a flash, but only if they improved the video playback support. Or even an updated PSP with HDD built in. Trouble is, that'd bring the focus too much away from games, meaning less likely subsidy from Sony.

I agree.

I noticed straight away that the PSP was playing my MP3s better than my iPod. And it surprised the hell outta me - I just wasn't expecting it at all. Feels weird trying to defend its MP3 capability - the damn things got SO many things going for it people just stare blankly and nod when you tell them its a kick ass MP3 player as well. Presumably because they think you're just trying to big up every function. Whatever, its great and I love it. :)

Oh crap. Thanks. I never bothered to hit the music note for some reason, and never knew about the screen shut off -- I just realized that it turns itself off after 2 mins (dims after 1, off after 2).

Why is that so surprising? SONY should know a thing or two about making audio players....they've only been doing it for about forever.

It's surpring because the PSP is a game-unit foremost, and a media player secondly. The fact that it plays MP3s so superbly is shocking because it's not the unit's priority. There are $200, $300 and $400 units that don't sound quite as good as the PSP. We all know Sony's knowledge in the audio industry has always been superior to all else, but no one expected them to build a unit with such quality MP3 playback.

You need a good pair of headphones if you want good quality sound from your iPod. The earbuds that come with it are shit.

Yet another one who didn't bother to read the entry post to the thread. Congrats!

no you dont understand, playing superior audio is its priority! it's a multimedia device! yes, playing music albums might not be it's normal mode of operation, but certainly playing complex game soundtracks is one of it's normal modes of operation. and the microelectronics themselves are so cheap that it doesnt really take a lot to design a good amplifier, and as has been said, lord knows, if anyone, sony should know a thing or two about audio.

portable music players by its function aren't just audio quality. if that were the case everyone should bitch about the lack of OGG or anycompressed lossless format like MPC or (gasp) WMA Lossless, or advocate the need for in-unit headphone amps and the like.

it has to also include usability and library management, (browsing, playlist, iTunes/PC interface, etc.) which in both cases the iPod destroys the PSP because out of the water. smaller flash players likewise trump the iPod when it comes to portability, durability and battery life. that said, while i don't own an iPod, i've used it long enough to realize that it's too large a player for my tastes(though i dig its interface), and couldn't even imagine using a PSP as my all purpose DAP.

I like the iPod's size, it's nice and meaty but not too large or cumbersome. PSP seems a tad bit too big for a portable music player, but I can live with as I've got huge pockets on my jackets.

No one cares about portability in this discussion.

Nitewulf: Good point, actually.

PSP does have pretty shitty navigation and browsing. Pretty much non-existant really. Your only hope is setting up and exporting playlists in advance and transferring them to have any control over your music.

If you want to use it as a simple shuffle-type device then thats OK, but with larger capacity cards you might start to need some playlist management.
