Mr. Plinkett's Star Trek Picard Review

Ah shit. Picard isn’t good? That’s a pity. I had been avoiding reading anything about it so hadn’t heard much in the way of opinions. I was cautiously optimistic about it.

I watched the Re-Views they were doing for the show already and it was fun but a bit scatterbrained. I bet this is even better, can't wait to watch.

I have no interest in modern Star Trek, but I will watch this later.
I've seen a few New Generation episodes on TV before, so I have a reasonable idea of what modern Piccard "should" be.

Picard really is quite bad. So much so that it'll probley take a little of the shine off Patrick Stewart's acting legacy when he's gone.

The guys review is way to long and his voice is fucking horrid to listen to longer then 5 minutes.

However the video is great edited tho. and he's right no what picard really is. A dumpster fire.

I watched 5 eps so far and will probably just stop, it's really boring and doesn't even try to pull you in in any way.

That’s even more damning than thinking it’s terrible. What a shame. Such a great opportunity there.

My official review for Picard is two words: "kinda shitty."

I say 'kinda' because there is a single episode that I thought was charming and TNG-like. Also when the storylines finally come together, it gets interesting but unfortunately goes nowhere and ends with a faceplant.

That was great. You know Mike loves to do these Plinkett reviews on things he's passionate about. And when I say passionate I mean he reserves his most damning and funniest criticism on material that deserves it. Like with the Plinkett review of Ghostbusters 2016, he goes in hard on the showrunners of Picard for their ineptitude and utter blatant disrespect of Star Trek.

Favorite hightlights for this review for me are:

- Alex Kurtzman in a pathetic display begging people to watch the show because it was made with 'love.' Fuck you Kurtzman

- The muddled messaging of what the show is really about. Is it about Brexit? Trump supporters? Climate change? The refugee crisis? Corona vi- Fuck it. It's a goddamn clusterfuck of mixed political agendas that don't coalesce into a stable whole.

- Violence and catastrophe. Essential elements of storytelling.

- 'Galactic treaty'

- Elements that completely contradict with Star Trek canon that Plinkett happily points out.

- Russian bot- er, I mean people praising the show on social media.

- MAKE PICARD GAY!

- Wil Wheaton completes his transformation to cucked sellout by hosting interviews with both the cast and crew.

- The Sex Toy Mcguffin.

- Highlighting the fact that the series complied with Patrick Stewart's wishes. These wishes however where counter to what fans wanted. Out of touch celebrity strikes again.

- That montage of Trek at it's best devolving into it's worst is the most damning indictment of Picard that I've seen. Chilling.

Just fucking fire Kurtzman and hire someone with a love for the material, like Jon Favreau celebrating his love for Star Wars with The Mandalorian. Trek deserves it's own Mando revival.

Not a huge fan of Star Trek, outside of the original films that I enjoyed as a kid. The wife loves it though. We watched Picard together for a couple of episodes, then I got fed up watching a whole bunch of people shouting at this old as fuck dude for not being absolutely perfect forever & still solving all of their problems for them. So I gave it up. She watched the whole thing & said it was just meh.

Y’all got any more of them galactic treaties!?
lol yeah they have a "galactic treaty" saying no more androids? so all different alien species in the galaxies are just going along with that, no use of robots or anything at all? hah ok. sure.

everything about this series looks like trash. i watched the first two episodes and they were as dumb as a box of rocks. decided to stop while i could still prevent more wasting my time. "Star Trek written by people that don't know anything about Star Trek" is pretty spot on. right from the start you could tell this was just a modern show, with modern writers, misusing an old IP to tell whatever shitty story they could cobble together.

when the eyeball gouging scene came out, i was so glad i ditched the show. fuck that kind of gross and gratiutous violence. Trek was NEVER about edgelord violence and to see it get dragged down into that was a huge shame. i straight up don't want to see that. in fact i haven't even watched the reviews since i know that scene is in there. i listen to them. i will never see the rest of Picard. fuck them.

then i found out that that actor had "been cancelled" due to writing something on social media, and the whole over the top violence was in fact a mean spirited political jab at an ex actor... because he wrote a mean Tweet... well... fuck watching anything these writers ever work on again.

then i hear there is a ninja who chops people's heads off. then i hear at the end of the show Picard begs someone to kill him. then they turn him into an android who has none of the advantages of being an android and is still going to die soon. so sick of nihilistic bullshit.

Data begs Picard to kill him. Whatever that means, Data is just living in a simulation at that point.

I couldn't bring myself to watch Picard past episode 4 or so. And now I don't have to.

Great review by RLM. Last 5 mins juxtaposing old trek and nu trek sum up exactly what I feel about this show.

Well that settles it. I'm never watching Picard.

But I've also never watched any Star Trek newer than Voyager, and even though I like Star Trek I don't like the newer stuff that I've seen. TV is dead.

I wonder if the RLM guys have seen The Orville? That show sounds much more like a Trek fan's modern take on the 90's "space opera" formula.
Yes they have, they made reference to it in other reviews. But seem to be not interested enough to review it by itself.

I have watched a bit of the Orville myself and just went back and rewatched TNG instead.

I wish they would just make a new Star Trek that was actually Star Trek. Pretend the new Star Trek movies and everything after never happened.

My wife and I really enjoyed it, as did one of our friends. This thread is the first time I’ve seen that people didn’t like it. I don’t seek out reviews of shows and movies anymore as I’m pretty easily entertained and get tired of all the negativity.

For what it’s worth, my wife grew up watching and loving The Next Generaration and I‘ve seen very little of it and am pretty indifferent on Star Trek overall and we both liked it. I did find parts a bit slow, but that’s how most Star Trek shows and movies are to me aside from the J.J. Abrams movies.

yeah they like Orville a lot, and think it is the closest thing to a modern TNG. but they found there are some issues with it and that ultimately, like Makariel said, it just made them want to rewatch TNG.

btw if anyone has yet to sit through the entire series of TNG, i highly recommend it. one of the greatest shows of all time, and it will tell you why Trekkies act the way they do.

Even as a casual trek fan making his way slowly through tng for the first time, watching this makes me hate Alex Kurtzman. Him and the rest of Jj's cronies need to be banned from screwing up beloved properties.

I am bit torn here...

On one side I feel I have seen to much classic Trek (counting together TOS, the movies, TNG, DS9, some VOY und all of ENT are like almost 500 episodes) in my life and like some new approaches to that old universe.

On the other side, there is something distinct that makes Trek Trek. And they almost completely forgot about that in Discovery and Picard.

I have to admit, I liked Discovery a whole lot more than Picard. I guess that's because it is more its own thing, instead of relying on existing fan favourites such as Picard so much.

I really enjoyed it too.
My mom loved TNG when I was a kid, and I would sometimes watch with her.
Because of quarantine, I was able to watch this with her, and we both really enjoyed it. Loved the cameos, the language they used, and their attempt to modernize.
I'm sure the circumstances and nostalgia helped, but I really enjoyed it, solid 8.

I did check out the review, and couldn't make it more than a couple minutes. That voice is grating, and it's over an hour and a half long. A review the length of 2 episodes, how is this a thing?

Not a Star Trek fan but I’m a huge RLM fan and the re:views of Picard have ironically made me want to get into Old Star Trek. I might try looking for DVD collections.

it was definitely tamer than the other Plinkett reviews. You could chalk it up to age but honestly, I think Rich nailed it: Mike’s going through grief. His love of Star Trek is genuine despite being a running joke by now. Consider how jaded and cynical he can be. Consider how much then it must take for him to genuinely love something, then consider how much it must suck to realize be it your age or the IP itself: it’s over.

Yes, these are silly things, but be it cars or sports teams, or pets, or movies or games, we’re prone to personify ourselves through things and love them.

I think Mikes love is genuine and this shows it. The end was poignant and reminded me of the end of the Indiana Jones review, but that was swept away with humor and laughs. Here: It’s absolutely bittersweet.

I enjoyed the first episode, then the show just couldnt get a grip and feel into the most boring hours I've witnessed on TV. It lacked soul or charm, and I blame that completely on the writing. It felt like someone shoehorned Picard into a different universe. Like they already had a scifi written about androids and ai, then someone said "we need to coat this in Star Trek paint and make the protagonist Picard if this has any hope of getting viewers". and so they did, and suddenly you have this weird show that doesnt feel like star trek, but uses all its jargon and charecters.

The timing of this was flawless for me. I only watched 5 minutes of the first episode last week and got a very nasty whiff off it so decided to steer clear.

Watching the rest of the show through this review is a joy!

I'm a massive Trek fan.
