MS 360 conference E3 (streaming link inside)

I got it. :( I am getting excited about the games while most of this is console war stuff. I actually knew that before the two conferences but the games shown got me going and thinking about what a cool gen is coming up.

Nothing wrong about getting pumped for games. More power to you.

But here's the nagging reasoning that will keep a lot of wallets on lock-down this november:

If you know you're only capable of buying one system in the next couple of years, do you really want to risk it on that Xbox 360, or go with the sure bet winner? Don't think Microsoft won't pull a Sega just because they have a ton of money--remember the initial launch of WebTV?

*Ugh*

I'm bailing out of this trolling/damagecontrol fest asap.

Let's hope Nintendo bombs tomorrow to take some of the heat off of MS and give the Xboys something to point fingers at.

Halo 3 isn't a no show. they never planned on showing it. whoever made you think it would be shown is fucking stupid. they are still riding the high of Halo 2 and showing 3 now would be retarded. it would seem as ifthey were forcing it out early.

Halo 3 will be shown next e3, which in itself will still be a nearly a year before it comes out (Holiday 06).
Bill Gates seems to think they're releasing Halo 3 "around the same time as PS3's launch," no? And that is Spring 2006.

I would have expected at least a MENTION of it. You're seriously trying to tell me that Microsoft will be fine with a MAXIMUM of 6 months hype for Halo 3 (E3 2006 to launch at Holiday 2006, if you want to go by those dates)? That's dumb as hell to me. Especially when they JUST GOT FINISHED describing how Halo 2 had the "biggest day in entertainment history." Why? Because of YEARS of hype.

The concept of Microsoft going through an entire E3 without anything Halo is mind-boggling to me, especially when they're trying to sell new hardware to people.

Sony isn't launching until much later than Microsoft, yet they paraded out every goddamn massive franchise they've got to sell the damn thing, from GTA to Final Fantasy. The fact that Microsoft didn't even say "oh, and by the way, look out for Halo" is unbelievable to me.

People seem to be throwing a lot of weight behind, "Look, they have Square!"
SOme of you have tunnel vision. Quit looking at FF XI and try to think about the implications of having Square finally on board. FF XI is just one game of what will be more (obviously since they even said as much at the show, citing what they will be able to do on XB360 will "blow you away" and demo'ing what they think wil be possible with their support behind it).

Try to see the bigger picture. Getting Square was the win for them, not the port of FF XI.

that's when Bill thought, before e3's announcement, like everyone else, that PS3 would have a holiday 2006 launch in the US/Europe. Halo 3 is not hitting next Spring dude.

I would add Project Gotham Racing 3 and Ghost Recon 3 and Kameo to that. And if you considered the scope and scale, Call of Duty 2 (due to the large scale war going on). Not that CoD2 looked very good, but for the amount of shit they had going on, it was definately a big step over Xbox 1.
You're right, PGR3 was on that level too.

Nothing else was, though. They were "better than Xbox" but far far away from "holy crap, this is clearly a whole new ballpark."

Read the rest of the post dude.

You're nutz if you think Ghost Recon 3 is Xbox 1 level. It is one of the most impressive things this e3 so far. Period.

i did. nothing in it changes my view. but for argument's sake, they could make the announcement before next e3.. in anohter show later this year.. and continue with that hype at next e3.

again... you are not getting Halo 3 this Spring.

Hello all.

I wanted to ask this. Isn't GOW going to rock up on PS3 as well or is it exclusive... I mean it'd be hitting PC, that I know. So what else is MS left with from this Rocky Horror Show that was amazing? GR + PGR3?

GOW is published by Microsoft Game Studios, so it's exclusive. But I'd expect stuff like UT2007 to be on PS3 as well as Xbox.

I dont even like GR games and i intend to buy it becasue the visuals, AI and animation blew me away. That was truly next gen

Even those two games will be overshadowed by Sony's games. Its a problem for MS because all their games have been countered by Sony. DOA4 and tekken 6, PGR3 and GT5, GR3 and Killzone and Sony even have games that MS have no answers to such as MGS4 and Devil may Cry 3. Im actually surpriesed that there was nothing on NG2, which could have lifted X360 interest.

They'll both have games to which there won't be "answers to" on the other platform.

The conference was long-winded but good with MSFT obviously hitting all the bases with ease-of-use, features, nice hardware/controller design, and with content of one sort or another from everybody from EA to Capcom to Square-Enix. PGR3, Kameo, Lost Odyssey, GoW, GR3, the EA basketball game, NFSMW, and more are all looking hot.

This may very likely end up being very well targeted overall from a wider audience marketing standpoint, but there are a couple glaring issues that are making me sit back with a cynical raised eyebrow.

One is seeing exactly what games they truly launch with, which is suddenly more nebulous than expected due to diverting emphasis away from PDZero.

But the one that sticks in my craw is the dodge on backwards compatibility. It isn't for MSFT to tell me which of my many favorite Xbox games are "worthy" of being run on Xbox360. I wanted a nice and neat no-b.s. compatibility.

DOA4 gameplay > a sweaty Tekken character with no background, AI, anything (hint: X360 could have done that Tekken scene in much the same fashion)
PGR3 > GT5 by a long shot
GoW =tie= Killzone "demo"

MS doesn't have an answer for MGS4 or DM4, but they don't need one, yet.

DOA might look better game now and I agree with you, but Im sure that tekken 6 will sell better than DOA4. Its the same with GT5. PGR3 might be the better game, but because GT is so well known it will sell better. At the end of the day, MS and Sony dont care how good a game is, its how well they sell.

Next year, I hope MS focuses the Xbox 360 on *games*.

Not BS customization faceplates and shit I can buy over the Xbox Live marketplace. Ridiculous.

It sure as hell helped Nintendo.... Anyway the whole big picture thing is moot right now.... neither you nor I know if this is going anywhere. We simply don't know either way what titles MS will get... and since the FF series has already been announced to continue on the PS3 anything else is going to be considered less than the "flagship" of that company...

while call of duty 2 graphics aren't that hot, there is sooo much shit going on that it more than makes up for it.

Same with Killzone 2 and it looked a lot more detailed.

Did they show NHL 2K6 footage during this conference? I saw another vid with a lot of games being shown, and I saw it in low quality, but it looked pretty good animation wise. If it's coming out this year I'm gonna have to buy the 360.

I'm concerned about the framerate of the games. If GoW can't be done at 60fps...the 360 is far too underpowered compared to the PS3. The difference would be more than the diff between the DC and PS2.

No doubt PGR3 looks good. At the moment yes, PGR3 looks better than GT demo, but it's not a great comparison. GT demo was quickly put together for the conference using GT4's car models, pit crew models, textures and tracks. It even has the shimmering problem.

Let's have a history lesson.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.

Lesson over.

So it's a rushed demo then. This is Polyphony Digital, not some 2nd-3rd party. So it's safe to assume that they would probably have 1st dibs on any devkits, and they're games would be farther along than most 3rd parties.

Keeping that in mind, if they couldn't get a decent demo up and running, what's to make us believe that Guerilla could get a game that looks the way KZ2 does up and running with what appears to be a complete next-gen 3d engine?

And we're all that much dumber. :P

For argument's sake, let's say Square were to release FF:CC2 for Xbox360. It would DESTROY the original in sales, because you have every single Xbox360 capable of playing it over Live (no longer limited to just 5-10% of the base), AND you remove the connectivity bullshit requirements that hampered the original. It would actually make a pretty kick-ass Live game. Also, Square would be releasing it on a system that is closer to the PS3 in aesthetics/target market.
