The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
"pwn": A typo-deliberate version of own, a slang term that means to dominate. This could also be spelled "0\/\/n3d" or "pwn3d," among other variations. Online video game bullies or "griefers" often use this term.

What n00bs. My parents know some 1337 'coz my friends and I would use it sarcastically around the house. Explaining "totally pwnz0r3d" to my mother was hilarious :lol She knew what n00b meant, though.

Characters of similar appearance can be used to replace the letters they resemble. For example, "5" or even "$" can replace the letter S. Applying this style, the abbreviation MS for Microsoft is somtimes spelled out as M$ by your little brats.

Would have been better that way.

Wasn't there an episode of Ghost Writer about this?
Yes. i mean, i never watched that show.

This is almost as bad as a local newspiece on raves saying tht water bottles were a sign that your kid was doing drugs.

In what context could "pwn" be used indicating illegal activity?

"Yesterday in the alley, I totally pwn3d this d00d's face with a tire iron until he was d34d. w00t!"
"I pwn all kinds of illegal copies of music, movies and softw4re!"

Also, "griefers?" Am I the only one who has never heard this term before?

:lol :lol I guess that makes me a griefer.

I love griefing in WoW.

Someone's got your mission and you have to wait 10 min in Horde territory before it respawns? No! Grief the group in front of you and take the mission that's rightfully yours.

I've shown this link around to a few people asking the very same thing. Nobody has ever heard of it.

Griefers is a term used mostly in mmorpg PVP servers. Like when a level 50 keeps killing some level 10's for the sole purpose of causing them grief.

What griefers do
Typical griefer behavior includes: taunting others, especially beginners (also known as newbies); thwarting fellow teammates in the game; using inappropriate language; cheating; forming roving gangs with other griefers; blocking entryways; luring monsters toward unsuspecting players; or otherwise using the game merely to annoy a convenient target or to harass a particular player who has reacted to their ill will.

Also, the new griefing

Leaving a negative feedback in response to someone beating your ass down legitimately on xbox live. Hoping to get that person a ban.

""ph": often replaces "f," as in "phear" for "fear" (as in "ph34r my l33t skillz") and vice versa, such as spelling "phonetic" as "f0|\|371(.""
:lol :lol :lol :lol

This article is a dream come true. I'm sending MS a thank you email.

It's not just restricted to that though. I remember when I used to play warcraft 3 on battle.net, people would join ladder games and intentionally kill their teammates, exploit bugs to win games, and do all sorts of other shit that Blizzard considered "griefing" and eventually Blizz banned them all. It's a pretty common term now in online gaming (I'm sure MS considers people who join Halo 2 games and just shout racist epithets or kill their teammates as "griefers" too). It's loosely defined as anyone who plays an online game with the sole intent of ruining the enjoyment of the game for other people.

Yes. But if the writer demostrates that, he uses that so called "internet bullying languange" to put a label on the bullies he speaks against. Which would probably confuse some people.
