MS Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player: Who's getting it?

I agree. If my employ situation solidifies as I think it might, this will be tought to resist, especially since it just dawned on me Universal = Hitchcock = Absolutely Deadly Killer App. Shit, even if I'm living in a taxicab, the day they release Vertigo, I'm in.

Jump in. Besides, a winner can't be determined unless people cast their vote. I love mine. The new Miami Vice looks incredible. As does Batman Begins and The Polar Express. I highly recommend this to anyone who has an HDTV and wants to see true HD content on their set.

Having said all that, DVD's on an upconverting DVD player on smaller HDTV's still look pretty damn good. I was watching LOTR this weekend on TNT-HD and decided to switch over to my DVD versions and watch them commercial free. I was shocked as to how much better the DVD looked. I know TNT-HD is shotty. But nonetheless, it still looked awesome. I have a 30" Sony HDTV CRT.

DOLBY TRUE HD - do you think there will be a firmware update for the 360 so it can deliver it?

Also, is DOLBY TRUE HD software driven or hardware driven? I think the answer to that question could determine whether we'll get DOLBY TRUE HD on the 360 or not.

Oh yeah, LOTR has some of the best mastered DVDs in my collection. I remember when I first got my HDTV, just watching ROTK Extended on my DVD player was like WAAAUUUGHHH SICK DUDE. When Gollum pokes his head out from the entrance to the cave at the beginning. Shit was like PHOTO REAL. Of course I have like a barely 30" CRT so, everything looks really nice.

Yeah, the LOTR's DVD's are amazing. Nice way to show of an HDTV without even using true HD content.

The other factor that is preventing me from picking up the HD-DVD add-on is that my 360 is not on my primary TV in the living room. It's on my secondary, yet still HD, TV in a room that I don't tend to sit and watch movies in. Still, I'm very tempted to pick up the player anyway. Batman Begins would be an instant purchase for sure.

Both. Although a firmware update could probably allow the system to handle True HD internally, you still need a way to output the signal. True HD output requires either HDMI or analog 5.1 outputs. Given that neither the 360 nor the add-on have either, you'll have to get another player for True HD.

just have to point out, that hd-dvds sound better than dvds on the 360, even though not as good as tru-hd through a compatible receiver or players with analogue outputs.

I agree. I was doing some A/B comparisons between HD-DVD on the 360 and standard DVD on our Denon. I noticed the sound was better on the HD-DVDs.

After they got stacks of the players at Futureshop in Vancouver they sold out of them only a few days later. Hopefully they get another shipment so my GF can get me one for Christmas.

Do you people really think it looks that good? I had one but took it back, because the 360 didn't seem to be able to keep up with the movies without glitching on a consistent basis. Maybe I should take it back and get another - it would be my third. Will maybe get a real player later, but using the PS3 for Blue Ray instead for now...

huh?

HD DVD looks awesome. The glitching sounds more like your 360 is hosed, not the players as mine has been Perfect... take advantage of the 1 yr 360 warranty would be my suggestion.

To the people who have the HD-DVD drive: are you running in 720P, 1080i, or 1080P? How does it look in 720P? My TV can only do 720P.

Even though I have a PS3, I had totally decided to stay out of the whole next-gen media war until there was a clear standard, since I didn't want to risk wasting money on one format or the other.

But then I hauled a ton of games to Gamestop the other day for credit, totalling about $170. While I was standing at the counter trying to decide if there was a new game I wanted to pick up, my eyes just happened to float over the HD-DVD box... and I thought to myself: "Wow self, you could walk out of here with an HD-DVD drive and King Kong for like $30 out-of-pocket."

King Kong looks incredible. :D

I'm very curious to hear anyone's 1080i impressions.

My 32" HD Sony CRT (don't recall the model, sorry) is displaying all my HD stuff at 1080i, and it looks great. I don't notice any issues (in terms of fast-moving scenes or what have you).

i'm running it on a 1080p set that is deinterlacing it from 1080i over component. 720p still looks great, but i haven't seen it on a 720p native set. it's still a good resolution, and you're still going to see the difference between dvd. if you can appreciate the difference between a 360 game in hd, you'll enjoy this.

better picture quality than even downloaded or broadcast HD looks on your tv. better sound quality than your DVDs (though not as good as a proper hd-dvd player with suitable amp can manage).

1080i CRT here... absolutely brilliant picture IMO.

better than my HD Cable (HDMI) and OTA feed and King Kong is a showcase of HD DVD for sure.

*disclaimer* I'm no videophile so I can't comment on artifacts and the like but all i know is it's the best HD picture that I've ever seen and I have had OTA and Cable HD feeds for over a year now.

yeah that's the problem with hd-dvd (and blu-ray) at the moment. mostly shitty movies :(

it's the same thing as the virtual console. if you put out the good movies on a drip feed with lots more shitty movies in between, people will buy more movies than if you just put out all the good ones to start off.

it's a shame for consumers like us, but highly effective.

True.

I just bought Mission Impossible 3, Serenity and Jarhead for CHF 29.90 each, that's a pretty good price. Cheaper than from amazon.

Agreed. 1080 is for me as well. Staggering!

better hit up buy.com before the 26th. puts 20 dollar hddvd and blurays at 13.33 a piece when you buy three

if im not mistaken dont the new nvidias have the ability to play these. also all youd really need is a laptop, i think it bypasses the HDCP stuff due to it being directly connected to the monitor.

Wife give it to me early for Xmas... we watched Superman Returns... the picture looked solid, but my wife kept saying how things looked fake (i.e. Superman and some special effects). Though I was impressed with the sound... sounded better to me. Since I own King Kong on DVD and have the HD-DVD that came wit the player I am going to do a visual test and see if I can see a difference.

So tell me GAF.

I'm running a 46" Sammy DLP that does 480i/480p/720p/1080i.

I'm running my games in 1080i through component cables.

I hooked up the HD DVD player and installed the software etc.

Started watching King Kong and MY F****** GOD does this make SD DVD's look like SHIT!

I'm not a total video/audio philey as it would be but I can notice the difference between the two now.

Anyways, so is my HD DVD player upconverting to 1080i or is it playing in 720p?

Either way it looks re-fu** awesome and I can't wait to get some other HD DVD's now.

Totally worth it for a $199 add-on and hell a free Christmas present at that. :D

Yeah, HD movies are awesome huh?

By the way, why are you running in 1080i? Aren't most if not all Samsung DLPs either 1080p or 720p native?

Ohhh. Don't do that.

Your native pannel resolution is 720p, set everything to 720p

Right now you are taking 720p games, making the 360 convert that to 1080i, sending it to your TV, then making the TV convert 1080i back to 720p...can you see the problem with that?

Well, there you go..... a straight answer on HDTV.... Let me go try that out.

Got this thing for Xmas and I have a question.

Is there anyway to set the HDDVD player to autoswitch to 1080i?

Long story short, I want the "standard" settings of Games = 720p and Movies = 1080i. Right now the only way I see to do that is to manually switch the 360 settings before I watch a movie and change them back afterwards.

does your display support 1080i? if not then just set it to 720p and enjoy.

I brought my 360 and HD-DVD player with me when I visited my parents' house, and we hooked it up to dad's Samsung DLP. Showed off a little bit of Viva Pinata and GRAW, and we watched Grand Prix. WOW did that look amazing for a 40-year-old movie.. I could have imagined myself sitting in a theater, except that the colors are probably better. Those Ferraris were red, by God. And this was with the standard 360 cables, right out of the box! Everyone who observed it was floored.

Bought it this afternoon. I'm really impressed by the picture quality, it's amazing. :D

is that hooked up through VGA? if so, how is the IQ upgrade from DVD to HDDVD? im interested in the add on, but all i have is a samsung lcd monitor that i use my 360 on. just want to see if the improvement is worth it.

Got one today through nefarious means (buddy of mine helped me finance it, now I owe him some money).

BUT DAMN KING KONG looks good. Shit.

We are pretty intense on the AV standards and both of us were very pleased. I'm on a 22 inch widescreen LCD and for anyone on the fence about wether its worth it through VGA, it's definitely an noticeable increase in quality.

My only issue is the selection of movies right now, and the possibility that HD DVD might not last.

Oh well, pretty cool shit.

I did not get one from my gf (she got me a lot of other smaller stuff instead) but I got some cash and had credit from trading in my Cube, so I picked one up the other day.. won't be back at our place until the 1st, so I can't check it out yet but I'm excited. I got a $50 gift card to Best Buy as well that will probably go towards buying an HD-DVD or two, but damn those $25+ prices hurt!

I picked it up last night along Superman Returns and Batman Begins. It came with King Kong still so that's a nice bonus. The movies look outstanding on my TV. It was definitely worth the money.

I got one for Christmas, and I had the Miami Vice HD-DVD/DVD combo disc. King Kong looks absolutely amazing (even in 720p, w00t)... Miami Vice? Meh. I love the movie, but the video quality on the HD-DVD is barely a step up from the DVD (I switched sides to compare). I still like how it looks though. It's just too grainy, and it's a shame since the movie itself was partially filmed in HD (half and half).

Casablanca is on the way.

Current HD Movie Collection:

Blu-Ray
Talladega Nights
Ice Age: The Meltdown
The Last Samurai

HD-DVD
King Kong
Miami Vice
Casablanca (on the way)
