Multiple reports of joycon connectivity issues in Switch previews

Thanks to GameXplain for the great video. Should be put in the OP.

Wonder if the joycons have their own firmware that can be updated.

Some of you in here are fucking crazed. Wait for Nintendo to actually test this and release a statement. Some of you are already sure it's going to be mass recalled

Don't you think they should have tested it long before they sent out preview units?

The other more sinister allegation is that they knew there were issues and decided to release it anyway.

The question you should ask yourself is.
When you have your switch and you do the day 1 patch.
You start up zelda.
And after 20 min randomly zelda walks wrong lags and doesnt respond.
And in 40 min again and again etc..

Will you just think oh well maybe a later update will fix it.

Or

How fast are you returning the console?

It's Link....not Zelda.... *triggered"

Most if not all demoed joycons were very close to the console.

You can get bluetooth class 1 (100 m), 2 (10 m) and 3 (5 m).

I wonder if these controllers have opted for the weaker class for battery life compared to standard controllers ?

Obscuring the path of a bluetooth signal - its microwave, you are just increasing the distance effectively its not a line of sight technology.

it's likely due to wireless interference weakening the signal.
It's a good thing you don't need a cellphone to use the Nintendo Switch! Or any of its features!

Lol what? There's something called QA were this should've happened long ago before releasing in it's broken form. And I'm pretty sure all the hype Nintendo gaming videos knew of this issue but couldn't say shit on it, because they work for Nintendo. All of these sites picking up quick on this issue isn't coincidence. This is plain wrong so stop being an apologist. People have all the right to react this way.

If this is a Bluetooth issue then they must have cheaped out on the parts.

Apple's newest line of BT headphones have insane range, I can pretty much leave my phone in my bedroom and just take the headphones anywhere in my apartment and be fine. This is in an older apartment with really thick stone walls.

HD Rumble? More like Launch Day Fumble.

Uh.

Joy-Cons? More like... Sad-Cons.

Um.

Nintendo Switch pros: Pro Controller. Nintendo Switch cons: ...

Ah, never mind.

Of course an update will be able to fix those issues. It's great the problems are being reported, but panicking about it is crazy.

Ok that is horrendous to see in person during zelda, what the hell is going on.
That is clearly a hardware issue, no wonder that reviewer said zelda was unplayable without a pro controller.
Nintendo really expected this to go unnoticed?
Not sure if you're being serious or not.

This looks pretty bad. The best case scenario is that a bug is making the joycons enter some kind of low-power mode where it easily loses signal, in which case new firmware could fix it. A hardware problem would be much worse.

Holy fucking overreactions...

Read my post people or go back to school and learn physics.

There is nothing unusual about reducing signal strength by blocking the signal.

I can block my Xbox One Controller signal to the console itself, go to another room and it will still be working perfectly fine.

This is not an overreaction.

Maybe I'll see if there's any news about it yet, or maybe I'll return it.

Like, this isn't life and death, people. Millions of orphans' lives are not on the line. If there's a problem I will think about what I want to do with the information at hand.

I still think there has to be more to this than just the signal getting choppy when something's in between the joycon and the console. I mean, when playing something like Mario Kart in the split joycon configuration you'd be covering almost the whole thing with your hands, much more so than in the GameExplain video - logically this should have come up earlier if it was just that.

Really hoping Nintendo gets a statement out regarding this asap. It's really gonna sour my launch day if I can't play BotW properly.

These are the previews.
I think they mean the hands on tour previews. They were several long distance demos, for Mario Kart and Arms with this set up. I do remember hearing a journo having to move around to get a better signal.

Nintendo skating by on the skin of their teeth with this launch. Should've had the hardware out to play long before January outside of QA. We'll see what happens.

Ok... But if they couldn't fix with a Firmware update.. what other thing they could do other than that?

Nothing? If IT IS a hardware problem I don't see them doing shit besides maybe updating the controllers a long time down the line, why would you expect them to do anything more?

How? No, really, is it even possible to fix this via software update?

Connection issues have been solved with software updates in the past. Nintendo isn't new to making wireless controllers, for it to be an actual hardware problem would be extremely surprising.

Blunty made a video on GameXplains new video detailing what's happening with the bluetooth

https://youtu.be/nJBAp33tnNE

If this could be fixed, however unlikely, I'd be fine with the JoyCon battery life taking a hit. 20 hours is already pretty damn fucking great and if increasing the reliability of JoyCons would knock about 5 hours off or so, it wouldn't be a significant detriment.

From what i have read the problem isn't happening this consistently.

The symptoms in that video are exactly the same as when I first moved my PS4 into the next room (because it was so loud) and ran the cables through the wall. What I found was that if I held the controller down in my lap and raised my feet or otherwise blocked the signal with my body, the weakened signal couldn't reliably make it through the wall and inputs would "stick" just like in the video. I just stopped blocking it with my body and didn't have a problem after that. I should note that when I upgraded to a Pro I no longer had these weak signal issues.

As far as the Switch goes, I never had any intention of playing it with the joycons except when they were connected in handheld mode, so I'm not terribly concerned about this issue. I've got a Pro controller on order as well and I won't be blocking it with my body. But if I was concerned about this I would take a "wait and see" approach and maybe cancel next week if Nintendo doesn't address it.
