(Multiverse) Can Sega compete better than the Xbox division against Sony Playstation?

Microsoft's presentation was very good, lots of AAA games. If Microsoft had patience they would have better commercial performance however Phil Spencer and Nadella want results so they are becoming third party.

Sega would never have 30 AAA games at a conference but what's the point of so many games if not all of them will be released this year, only about 6? What kind of strategy is this?

Could they do a Wii U-like strategy and release a cheap console with PS5 power in 2027 ?
It's possible but not commercially viable, if they did something like that they would be humiliated.
or so to entice kids with a Sonic exclusive? Maybe, not sure if it's worth the almost guaranteed disaster, though.
When you say 'kids' you probably mean 'casuals and non-gamers'.

I believe that trying to attract non-gamers is not worth it but attracting casual gamers is. If a realistic lightgun were included in the package it would attract attention, however the legislation of several countries restricts realistic replicas of guns.

Funnily enough, Sega could have re-entered the Steam/PC Hardware market since their arcade boards were commodity PC's. The RingEdge would have competed nicely against the PS360 with the library of Steam. Followed by the Nu for the 8th generation.

few users interested in theorizing. It seems that Phil's interview with IGN has not yet been digested by the base.

Xbox division made more mistakes than Sega, but Microsoft's money supported the division, Sega has an otaku focus that is trending at this time.

I love Sega but no. They dropped out because they had no money, not because there was anything wrong with their platform or software output. DC was objectively better than PS2 until Sega pulled the plug on it. Higher rated games, better image quality, online capable, VMU, cheaper.

No, the Sega dream is dead. They failed more than they succeeded at the hardware game. They do not have the money to compete in the current industry as a console manufacturer.
Sega Genesis was not the success you seem to think it was and post 1993 it ended up killing them. All the unsold stock, returned consoles. It was all a mirage.
Dude the title clearly says "multiverse.." relax.

They have more iconic franchises than Sony btw..

Hardware market is totally fucked. You have to be a juggernaut to compete in the home consoles market, and it's not even that attractive as a market anymore. My previous answer (in this same thread, before you bumped it OP) still holds, as far as I am concerned.

SEGA make cool games, you don't need state of the art hardware to run cool games. Go and grab some of that Nintendo market share with a cool handheld that will work for kids as well.

Nintendo is not that rich, its games and hardware also do not have high production. It takes more than money, you need to do a good job and have a good strategy.

Considering all consoles besides the Switch are making themselves redundant by releasing games on PC.. And the fact that Sega hasn't produced a good console since the Sega Genesis, I'm gonna go with a "no".

Their last successful console may have been Genesis but the last good one was Dreamcast.

Adjusted for the time they came out, Dreamcast was better than Genesis.

I don't think so, Genesis had EA, Dreamcast didn't, Genesis managed to stand out against the Nes but the Dreamcast couldn't stand out against the ps1. People asked for Dreamcast refunds to spend on FF8.

Genesis does what Dreamcast don't

Fixed that for you. You pretty much agreed with me and helped fill in reasons why Dreamcast was not successful.

Thanks.

Unless you are implying that it wasn't a good console because it had 2K Sports instead of EA. In which case LOL

For starters, I don't understand why Sony is the competition here. Honestly, with how development has been evolving recently, it almost feels like they are going to implode themselves without needing help from anyone. This race for the most powerful console, and then having to justify the power through games that require endless money and time, is actually destroying the companies taking part in it. Infinite growth does not exist, this absurd race cannot continue.

Nintendo are the ones currently ruling the market. If anything, a new competitor should go and grab a part of this market. Nintendo are the sole company releasing proper handhelds consoles adapted for kids, nobody is even trying to compete. As a home console, the Switch sucks for sure, but Nintendo are making money on it and games don't require as much time and resources to create.
Nintendo is not part of this category that interests us, let Nintendo be happy alone. Sony is the competition here.

Xbox is more than capable. It has brilliant potential. The problem is the management/culture. I also highly question their relationship with certain people in the gaming press and social media which has proven to be obnoxiously predictable and ineffective at driving mindshare/marketshare yet they continue to do it.

I hate they what they have become and the people responsible because of the missed potential.

Sega were great but I think their hardware days will never return.

I would love a true Dreamcast 2 as much as the next guy, but being a third party publisher has treated their books way more favorably. No sense in screwing up a good thing just to satisfy 40+ year olds who miss the Sega vs Nintendo thing.

I always thought it was the Saturn that began the bleeding and the Dreamcast (because of Japan waiting for the PS2) that did them in.

Late Genesis era NA overstock issues started it. Dreamcast development really put them in the red.

If Xbox division was independent, they would have gone under on their first attempt and if they had somehow magically survived that failure the 360 would have bankrupted their children. A worse record than Sega.

They could have but they did make a lot of mistakes with the dreamcast despite its awesome game lineup.

For one the controller should have been this...
