Almost no one knows what TemTem is, it's not mass marketed, retailers are pushing it in your face, it's barely on TV if at all in terms of ads, and iirc it's steam exclusive.

Steam games are on PC, it's not a platform to forge an identity like proprietary hardware can, that's always been the case, that's why console gamers know little about computer gaming before 1999, and will take credit for things console devs took from computers and PC. You can associate games and identity with hardware, you can't do that with PC easily unless its a breakout hit in sales, or in a genre.

Or back in the day, associated with a tech advancement.

Consoles and handhelds don't have that problem, that's why a steam "competitor" to Smash or Pokemon won't work, just like a steam Forza or Uncharted competitior didn't work. It's that simple.

People want to simplify it as Nintendo having a magic something when that's not even the issue.

Temtem's early access was on PC. It released for all the major consoles at launch.




Many of the biggest games on the planet originated in and are primarily played on PC. Platform is irrelevant if you make something compelling. Ignore temtem. Sony tried to capitalize on the success of Smash to no effect. Everybody tried to copy Mario kart with no lasting results. Copying Nintendo's most popular games is difficult because the success is directly a result of it being Nintendo.

I actually really loved this game at release, thought it'd be a cheap cash-in but the love the devs had for the property really showed, and it had some smart changes to the genre's formula.
Far and away the best Smash clone out there.

I think where they messed up is the monetization and respect for player's time. The battle passes have the worst grind you've ever seen, and they randomly doubled the amount of XP it took to level characters up just to force players to play more. It was hard not to be burnt out when the game demands you play relentlessly to get anything.

Copying Nintendo's most popular games is difficult because the success is directly a result of it being Nintendo.
It's because they can't get the damn gameplay right at all. Always some stupid gimmick (Playstation All-Stars) or bad controls or feel in general (Multiverse) that ruins the entire game. You instantly know something is way off when you try them out. What they lack is the Nintendo quality and polish to create a good game so what you get are third rate bootlegs that can't compete against the real deal.

Yes... Smash is a party game, made for people to have fun and be easy to play by kids... has a lot of dumb anti competitive shit, but casuals are dumb and love that... to be competitive the game has to be giga trimmed down but that's not a issue as casuals never do that anyway.

The only Smash I had an issue with being a party game/for kids was Brawl. Every other version of the game, everyone I know just does 3 stock with all items turned off and you have your technical fighter. I played countless 1v1s and whoever lost always knew the mistakes were their own. The fact that Smash is easily scalable from a dumb fun party game to a tournament fighter just shows what a complete package it is in one game.

MultiVersus had a focus on competitive but the way it felt to play, should have been a party game. I found it floaty and imprecise. So I don't think the gameplay ever really had legs. It was just fueled being F2P, the characters and initial marketing moves. Smash on the other hand sells itself.

The gameplay is solid you just didn't like it because you are used to play smash and there's nothing wrong with that.

The focus on 2v2 was a risk decision but they did that because today's gamers prefer games where's they can share responsibilities for their losses(hence the success of team games and decline of 1v1 games), the problem was that they didn't really think that through...

Smash is primarily a casual game people play to have fun and goof around... Multiversus forgot about that and focused too much in being a solid competitive game.

They need to add real interesting characters(DC and Cartoon) and add more dumb fun modes to keep the casuals entertained and paying for cosmetics.

The events they have had are halloween and Christmas. These required stupid amounts of grind for some cool rewards.
I ranted about the insane grind (event and BP too) on reddit and got dogpiled and downvoted to hell.

Yep. They fixed the hitboxes at some point, but it still was a mess and landing hits often felt random.

Around here, Smash is so popular. When Ultimate came out I met a bunch of people into playing music and the synth guy always had people coming through his house fighting in Smash. I started expanding my friends network with it but it got surreal like I was reliving my teens defined by gaming so I faded away from it. But it was not something to have fun and goof around. It was all 1v1 with people watching and reputations at stake lol.

Aside from that. I noticed a small tabletop gaming/comic type shop close to where I lived before all that having Smash Ultimate tournaments every weekend. I signed up, but only showed one time because most of the participants were just kids. That's right, these fucking kids were 1v1ing in Smash in a comic shop. Casual game my ass.

I do think it is originally bought as a casual game, like Mario Kart, but unlike Kart is a gateway drug to endless hidden, and skill-based, non-random, depth. Show up for your favorite character, and then the tight gameplay sinks its teeth in, with layers peeling away like an onion until you are turning off all items on Final Destination.

MultiVersus has no layers to peel, and there is no final destination.

The game was purely carried by novelty and EVO hype. After a while the jank was very evident and still is to this day. Then they tried to appeal to Smash player but focus on 2v2s, a less popular format. The 1v1 is terribly unbalanced and 2v2 is just not fun. Dodge-spam is the name of the game, it just doesn’t have nearly half as much polish and mechanics of Smash Ultimate.

That was the reception to a fair criticism? I guess the community deserves it sadly.
Shame cause I think the game is actually fun and well designed with some of its glaring issues like latency aside

I dont care about these kinds of multiplayer brawlers, but I do respect Smash. I've played it myself on my niece and nephew's Switch. Good game, but I'm lousy at it.

This Multiverse game has to be the most blatant rip off ever. Kind of happy it bombed.

The whole GAAS model doesn’t make sense if it’s not your only game. If you can’t keep players playing and grinding you can’t make money. That’s why it’s going to crash and burn. It’s impossible to play N of these at the same time leveling up battle passes and shit. So all the new ones are going to fail just like with the post WOW MMO rush.

It was even worse during Melee's reign, I went to my best friends college dorm back then, everyone was wave dashing and kicked my ass. That was when I realized that, even though I beat all 51 event matches at home, I did in fact suck at Smash.

We can talk about the merits of the games as opinion, but I'm sorry Smash is taken seriously as a real fighting game and is not this "only casual to goof around" Mario Party type game you are suggesting. That's not my opinion, that's just empirical observation since 2001. It's not like I'm in some top percentile of gamers who see it that way.

They should repackage add more content based around local multiplayer, remove the absurd dlc and grinding and re-release this is a retail game.

Example: I'm a big critic of Genshin Impact, but it's very low maintenance - and extremely successful. You can do your dailies in 30 minutes tops and it's no big deal if you skip them.

I'm not suggesting that smash is ONLY that... I'm stating that being casual was the primary game design and also that the target audience IS casual players, people that play at the office, party's or home with their kids.

I don't like smash primary because I'm a OG fighting game player, but I respect smash MELEE as a high level competitive game.


Even multiversus developers acknowledge that they have made the game be to much competitive/e-sport oriented, so much that they decided to start adding goof shit to the game... Look at this shit they released THIS WEEK

Hasn't it been shut down? Or just before? I played it quite gladly at the beginning, but I don't really want to play it again. Since the game is gone very soon.

Yes, I noticed it too when I looked closely. I first thought he is from Pr team or something.

but yeah, I think the game is shut down currently yes. they're launching the full game next year... according to their plans.

I wouldn't be surprised if it gets cancelled before then tbh.

No, I was also surprised at this, but the game continues to develop, not at the same pace as before, but it's interesting to play now,

I also remember how I enjoyed it at the beginning, so I decided to go back there
