I missed this news during this busy month. Has anyone here read it yet? Is it worth picking up in hardcover? I haven't even seen any reviews on it.

That's what I started with. It's probably my favorite by him, too.

I really don't want to say anything else about it. It's an excellent book to explore.

I'm re-reading Hard-Boiled Wonderland right now, as a matter of fact. I intend to borrow Kafka On the Shore from work at some point, but we don't have enough copies for me to do so at the moment. Boo.

Picked it up in Euroland about 3 weeks ago, only just started on it tonight. I don't recognise the translator's name, but my friend in Glasgow spoke quite highly of him.

I read it about a year ago and I can't say that it was worth the money for the hardcover edition. Wait until it's out in paperback and read some other books of Murakami. Or start Franz Kafka! =)

my brother gave me Kafka on the Shore as a late christmas present this past weekend. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to get around to reading it until May =(

It only came out in Japan in July/August.

I need to beef up my Murakami collection but I don't want to do it with cheap paperbacks. I found the original large-format Kodansha release of Hard-Boiled Wonderland at the bookstore when I was getting Kafka, so I figured I'd grab that. Haven't read a lot of the books since college, and I definitely want to read HBW again.

I'm looking forward to it--I've read A Wild Sheep Chase (highly recommended), and I'm about 100 pgs. into Underground. It's so powerful! If all goes as planned, I'll begin a year-long research project on Murakami this summer, as well. He's truly today's best writer.

Hmm, no, that isn't possible, as I bought it in Germany the day it came out in the translated version. And that was early March 2004. Amazon states the same.

Released in Japan in 2002 according to the information inside the sleeve of the English version.

I'm new to Murakami - haven't read anything by him. I did read some of the review of Kafka on the Shore in The New Yorker, however.

Why is he revered as an author? Are the English versions of his books translations or originals?

it's going to come out of you and it's going to taste so good
Something tells me that somehow, he will still work in a scene where the protagonist has a wet dream in his sleep :p.

I'll pay hardcover for the new one though. Although here are the ones I've read already read:

Wind Up Bird Chronicle
Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World
Wild Sheep Chase

Any existing books that any of you would recommend I should read before I move on to the new one?

Absolutely. Read Dance Dance Dance, the "sequel" to A Wild Sheep Chase. It's probably my second favorite Murakami after Hard-Boiled Wonderland.
