Music That Is Incomprehensibly Bad To You

Most dubstep (okay most popular dubstep) I've heard just bores me. Its like...yes, you've discovered that by throwing sudden disruptions into your music you can screw with the natural anticipation of music in a way that's uncomfortable, but do you have any other tricks your pony can show me?

And while I love some electronica, dubstep feels dominated by the "throw a static-y TV playing an old NES game into a piano" school of electronic sounds.

And being in New York (?) I'm sure you've been to a few shows too, so have I. My band alone has played 30 shows in the past two years.

But my record collection is unassailable perfection I assure you.

You're right though, there probably is good music in every genre. But for some genres it involves wading through a fair amount of dreck to find the goodies.

Now if you'll excuse me, this Barry Manilow album ain't gonna listen to itself.

I have no issue with electronic music in general, their music just seems a bit "lame", in my opinion. I wouldn't listen to it when I go out to dance or party, which is pretty much the only time I really enjoy electronic music. I have no idea how influential they are, I just don't get what all the fuzz is about because I can't seem to get into their music at all. :(

I'm not so much arguing that it's not music, more that it's pointless music. But also, saying "but it's orchestral!" isn't a big advertisement for its quality. I enjoy some game music in its context as game music but taking it and listening to it alone ... no, I'm not going to do that. Like, the Halo music is great when I'm driving a warthog and thinking I'm mister chief, but I'm not going to put it on my phone and rock out to it on the bus.

I don't like Kpop and I've given up on metal. Kpop just doesn't do anything for me outside of Hyuna and metal has become so flat noted.

Dude the MGSR music was so bad, when I was playing it my wife came into the room and started to mock me. Like, actually. It was humiliating. When you listen to the Tekken OST, how does it make you feel? Assassin's Creed - I played all of those games, I don't think I could even tell you there WAS music in there.
 
With all my might it has to be Reggaeton. It's the most despicable, worse piece of shitty music ever creted by man. "Lyrics" (if you can call them that) are atrocious and usually degrading to women.
The world would be a much better place without it.

Like I dont usually like reggae either (too much lay down for me, it makes me sleepy), but at least that one I could understand people liking it, and it's not continued trash like the reggaeton. I didnt even knew reggaeton came from reggae (until I loked wikipedia to see how it was spelled in english), because in spanish we still spell it reggae while reggaeton is spelled Regueton, and I dont even think it sounds similar in the slightlest.

I don't like some kinds of rap and hip hop either.

Music that tries to scream to my ear, I like more melodic metal though.

Christian hardcore and metal. Modern country and screamo are also God awful. Anybody that sounds like jack Johnson or Dave Matthews.
 
I wouldn't consider them bad, but music that definitely doesn't click with me is country music. There are other genre's as well but this is the main one that doesn't do anything for me.

The beats aren't catchy or sexy. Plus there's not much rhythm and blues in them as well. The singers, imo, have over exaggerated voices and accents (that I know they aren't doing on purpose due to it being natural for them). If I want to grab a hold of the lyrics, I don't relate to them at all. I'm not a country girl and want a country love life so I can't find much there I can grab on and so on.

I did like Shania Twain, Reba, Dolly here and there, Sheryl Crow, Faith Hill but that was it. After that, nothing. Taylor Swift is the only one who is still country but sits on Pop that makes it manageable to listen to.

I respect them, of course. I think they are technically great musicians, Freddie is a wonderful and arresting frontman, and they have the uncanny ability to write classic, lasting songs that people love and cherish; but BY GOD I'd rather have a hive of angry wasps forcibly inserted into both ears than listen to a single note of their campy, histrionic, cringe-inducing bullshit.

I feel the same way about Queen. I understand they were great musicians, but I don't enjoy their music.
In High School, the principal would blare their songs over the loud speaker on testing days, so I associate them with standardized testing.

i will agree with you 100% on the fact that the MGR soundtrack is fucking awful. really shitty stuff, and i have no idea why it's so popular.

Oh, wait a minute. No it isn't. You can arrange any piece of music to be played by an orchestra. Put make-up on a pig, give it a Versace handbag, some Jimmy Choo Shoes and a nice little black dress. At the end of the day, it's still a fucking pig.

Not everyone is into music for instant appeal though. Some people enjoy the freeform nature of experimental music. Sure it's a bit shitty calling it incomprehensibly bad but no more so than doing the same thing for metal or hip hop or country or whatever.

I like all genres of music, but some things that make a bad song are universal and carry through all music:

Uninspired, regurgitated lyrics with no thought behind them.
Sterile mixing and producing.
Unoriginality.
Lack of passion, in other words the song is just built from blocks that are expected to work without any real vision or purpose other than profit.


Metal is the genre I once listened to almost exclusively and now I've realised I cannot tolerate it at all. Most of it is just empty, technical noise.

That's what makes it fun though. Nothing like going to Karaoke with a bunch of friends and singing a bunch of songs you know are cheesy. Not everything has to be serious 100% of the time.

I've always seen Daft Punk as pair of curators of their favorite dance music styles who would distill them down for a wider rock/pop-friendly audience with a recognizable brand. Showmen and moneymakers, but not innovators ever.

As for the thread topic: there's a lot of music I can't stand because it's poorly constructed or it doesn't connect with me. But I'd rather listen to anything that's noisy and authentic than something that's made to be inoffensive and commercially successful.

I have a hard time with Queen as well, their songs get under my skin like few things do. It's like the music version of clowns. They're supposed to put you in a good mood but clowns really agitate me in the way that they do it.
 
Songs with the vocalist is screaming for whole duration of the song.
I can handle some screaming but for the whole song? It turns me off.
 
Rap can fuck right off as far as my ears are concerned. There just something utterly unappealing about it that makes me need to mute it or change the station as soon as I get a few seconds in. I have tried but I just can't find the good in that stuff. Whatever artistry there is to be found in this genre is completely lost on me, it's just so bad.

Also people really need to stop assuming that I like rap just because I'm bi-racial.

Have studies ever been done on what causes people to like or dislike certain types of music? Or what caused certain types of music to develop where they did?

As a relatively recent immigrant to north America, I agree. The radio in the lounge in our building is constantly tuned to a local country station. Every song goes something like this:

"Well I been workin' so damn hard, gonna go drink a beer with my boys, load up my truck and head on down that ol' dirt road"

Or some such nonsense. I just made that up. I mean, I get the sentiment, but it's like every song.

My pick would be UK "grime" music. Everything about it irritates me. Look at this kid:

I'm actually the opposite with indie right now. Ambitiousness and true experimentation in the studio has taken a backseat to this 'gritty and raw' mentality which is often an excuse for laziness and poor recording quality. Lo-Fi is a perfectly sound aesthetic, but if that and 3 chord verse-chorus-verse structure is all you bring to the table, what exactly are you doing that Guided By Voices didn't do 20 years ago?

Indie music is definitely pretty shit right now. Ambition is seen as uncool. It's now just shitty vibe music.

Oh man so much this! Probably because I'm seemingly incapable of playing a song without fucking something up, I'm way more interested in the feeling of humanity that comes with imperfection. I like production sounds where you can hear the room, or you can hear the guitarist switching pedals. Being insanely technically skilled is, to me, a bit like being able to paint photorealistically. Super impressive technique, utterly boring result.

I can understand why people wouldn't like metal, but this analogy is absolutely absurd and misinformed.

Anyway, for me, there is not really any genre of music that I can call outright bad in its entirety. There may be scenes and movements inside a genre that is mostly bad, like modern pop country. It is literally insipid pandering to the lowest common denominator with lyrics about trucks, girls, beer, back-roads, etc. That is mostly terrible, but you can't say country as a blanket term is all bad. That kind of generalization is just too wide to be taken seriously, liking saying all metal is about noise and screaming.
 
Honestly i don't care if perfection just isn't cool enough. Perfectionism and ambitiousness is what you should be aiming for if you want your music to mean something above superficial. And that's in all genres. The last thing we need is another pavement clone or another white r&b artist singing about his feelings.

That's one production technique and has, as far as I know, never involved anyone attacking a piano with a sledgehammer nor been a preeminent force in pop (barring arguably the Beck blip).

What do you mean...? I have a pretty eclectic taste in music, I simply don't think "orchestral" is synonymous with "quality".
