MY INSECURITY IS YOUR 500 RESPONSE NIGHTMARE

I don't see why it's so hard accepting someone doesn't genuinely like a game.

I personally loved RE4. For me it was the best cube game by far and an amazing game overall.

That said, I think it's not without faults. The game's difficulty is completely derived from the controls, so hence when you change the controls you completely change the dynamic of it. However, I don't think they need to have tank/hindered controls to achieve suspense at all and this is a key area they should address for their next big update in the franchise.

Another game where this is screwed is MGS3. The retarded camera and not being able to move while aiming is ridiculous for a game of its class. If this game's storyline and storytelling wasn't as amazing as it was, I would've hated it.

RE4 is a great game and it will be remembered as one of the best this gen... it's too bad you didn't enjoy it, but there isn't any game that everybody will like. But, as you can tell from all the great reviews, and the size of the RE4 thread, RE4 is definitly AAA material.

I personally loved the game, it had awesome action, was always fun, and had so mayn "Wow!" moments that make you want to keep playing to see what will come next.

I'm just not a big fan of shepherding gimps through video games. God, some of the my favorite parts of Resident Evil 4 are when I come upon a bin and can dump Ashley in there.

"Get in the box!" I yell. "I'll see you in Hell, little Miss Next in Line of Succession!"

Ah, but I always whistle for her.

(By the by, the president's daughter is not, technically, in the line of succession.)

and any new gameplay elements are ripped from Shenmue

QTE is as old as Dragon's Lair.

As for the initial post, if you could have tried any harder not to like a game, I think your head would explode.

I was waiting for this thread to appear. I'm amazed its taken THIS long.

Yeah it was bound to happen. The poster that starts these topics are usually attention whores in disguise. These topics are guranteed to generate multiple pages. Everyone is entitled to their opinion though ;p

There is no challenge at all.

Oh come on... you must be a very exceptional gamer if you don't find it challenging ANYWHERE throughout the game. I found the "Normal" mode to be quite challenging. I think on a second playthrough it'd be a lot easier though. But that;s the same for most games. Try Pro mode. It feels a bit more like the old games in that you don't have an abundance of herbs and ammo and you have to be a lot more careful in conserving them.

I One other gripe I have is that it just isn't scary. It lacks those dogs through the window moments that I so dearly loved. I have seen so many moments they could have made this game so much more scarier. It also lacks that creepy feeling that gets you in the mood to be scared.

IAWTP. Especially after seeing the footage of the old build of RE4 in the mansion. There were some more traditional RE scares and atmosphere but they were few and far between. This is why I really love REmake still. Fantastic atmosphere, graphics and scares!

Ironically, though, I have wondered....how do people think RE4 stacks up to Onimusha 3? I thought both games were excellent, played through the multiple times, both made major improvements to their respective series, had an emphasis on high action, and looked REALLY good.

Yeah, Onimusha is much better than the other two games in the series. It's my favorite of them no doubt....

That being said, it lacks the truly amazing pacing of RE4... RE4 is, like Half-Like 2 or a Metal Gear game, a procession of interactive action-movie set pieces stacked end to end. I friggin' love this new sub-genre, and hope more games like it come out in the future.

You're not alone. My problem was the story, which turned to be a HUGE dissapointment .
I was expecting to finally settle the score against Ozwell Spencer

Throw a hand grenade in there and tell her to hide. :)

The lame inventory system alone knocks a whole point off it. Lack of strafing and quick weapon change another point. Poorly implemented QTE's, forced animations, control issues and other problems gives it another point lost.

I haven't completed it but I give it a solid 7/10 thus far (I'm at 3-2 right now). Could have been totally brilliant had they worked out the play mechanics more. There is no way the game should get away with a 10/10 and just because the game is called Resident Evil it doesn't make it immune to bitching about its control system.

For those who said the game is too easy, and have completed it... how many times did you die in total?

I'm just curious, as I'm wondering if this is the "adaptive difficulty" at work here or if the game really is too easy. Me, my deaths were in the high 60s for the first run-though.

Great post! and man, right on bro, Remake was just amazing! I also remember those early RE4 videos and yeah, those were cool. I forgot about those. Anyhow, all in all, a few gripes aside (and to be honest, all games have some issues) RE4 is still awesome. But had they made Pro mode the default, added in a bunch of "dogs through window" type moments and made a few more creep you out feeling moments, we would have had perfection. But nothing's perfect and RE4 still rocks hard.

It’s the follow up to the government’s original waste of money anti terrorist booklet we seriously all got sent around 2 years ago.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, if a nuclear bomb detonates down the street, you could still be in good enough shape to cheese it.

Alternatively, you could find shelter after the radiation has transformed you into a giant.

i died 31 times and that's manily due to ashley. the game was way to fucking easy.

If everyone if finding this game "too easy" then I must completely suck. They give you so much ammo in the beginning of the game that I just assumed that it'd stay that way throughout the entire course. I ended up basically running out of ammo by the time I made it to the castle. Oh sure, I had plenty of bullets for my pistol but next to no shells for my shotgun and only a handfull of shots left in my rifle. Talk about a bitch. Getting through that damn castle with the limited ammo I had was a fucking chore.

I havent played for 2 days because of an absolute lack of time, butI hate how it feels so noobified. I got only got killed a few times by the zombie , and the only other deaths have been cutscenes death, and a few Ashley mishaps.

There is no searching around, the puzzles are incredibly easy to figure out. There is no challenge at all. I'm cruising thru the game. I seriously wish I would run out of ammo once in a while. Now I have so many guns and grenades now I feel like Rambo.

It's not like the previous games were hallmarks in hardcore puzzle games, but I really dont feel challenged at all.

It's not a bad game, but it's not a modern classic. It's a solid entry in the serie, but as a RE game, it's not hard enough, and as an action game, it's not complex enough, due to certain control issues and overall gameplay experience.

:lol :lol :lol

Dont worry, YOU WILL DIE MORE. Unless you're some sort of RE God, the game is challenging. Please hold off your opinion till you're finished/almost finished with the game. Then you can bullshit us some more how it's not hard and not a classic for this generation.

I'm wondering what chapter you're on, since you want the difficulty upped. I thought it was perfect as it took me multiple times to get past certain parts of the game.

Yeah RE4 could use a few scarier moments. Though I don't want all of it to be scary since I don't have the guts. Just a little bit more. :D

I loved stuff like: (don't read if you haven't finished the game...)

- jumping dogs near church.
- burning man coming out of some oven. :lol
- moving 'living' thing stuffed in a bag making the noise inside the box. that freaked me out! That whole underground prison place was awesome. The regenerator with a 5th parasite on his back killed me twice.

Well congrats GAF, you almost let a major release slip by without trying to ruin videogames. You can't keep this forum from hating for nothing.

I feel embarrassed for anyone that doesn't think RE4 is far and away the best in the series.

C'mon. I can see how this game might suck... ya know, if you don't enjoy good games.

Different strokes, I guess. With deaths, Ashley was the least of my problems - in my games she came out of it with relatively few scrapes while Leon got haggard and battle scarred.

Pfft.

Yes, way too easy. You died 31 times, but blame Ashley if it makes you feel better.

Playing professional mode and reading this topic is oxymoronic. TOTAL opposites. If you want strategy and tougher enemies by all means beat that easy as hell normal mode and do professional. Then come back and apologize.

I don't see why the fuck people have a problem with the controls in the game. Is it because you can't turn around quick enough? If so, just press down and b, or is it another reason like whenever you get killed you refuse to blame your lack of skill and blame the controls?

I mean I can understand your hate for the controls if it was a fixed camera angle again because the same controls on that was gay. But in this game, I don't see what the problem is.

Once more with feeling, I don't hate RE4, in fact, it's my favorite RE game. I just don't like the controls or the dialog and for me they knocked it down a point or two.

And word on the street is the muddy texturing is all sweet with a component cable. Now, if only they existed.

It's odd. I just set up my bro's new 50" Samsung DLP television,
EC.SAM.HLP5085W.jpg

and hooked up my Cube to see everything in progressive and out of all the games I sampled, RE4 was by far the worst looking. Everything was very pixelated and muddy. I would even say it looks better on my standard 32" JVC (running component but not progressive). I wonder if it has to do w/ the aspect ratio. F-Zero and both Metroid Prime's looked the best, btw. F-Zero is pretty much like an arcade game in your house.

And shooting stuff is old as Computer Space. The point is, how QTE was implimented was straight out of Shenmue.

No, it wasn't. There were scenes where I could agree with that statement, of course, but most of the "QTE" implimentation was quite different. Shenmue would literally present the player with very specific QTE scenes. RE4 throws them into normal combat and they are RARELY used in any kind of lengthy sequence. Shenmue would require the player to press certain buttons in a sequence in order to pass the scene. RE4 might ask you to press a single button (or button combo) at a specific moment and then simply continue the fight.

For example, you might be firing your shotgun at an enemy only to have him suddenly rush you. Right as he is about to strike, the game throws up a prompt for you to hit A in order to dodge that attack. You roll out of the way and continue fighting. RE4's method simply allows the player to perform more complex actions that couldn't necessarily be implimented into the general control scheme. Dodging an enemy attack via the A+B combo is hardly any different from pressing A to climb over a fence. They are simply context sensitive actions, not a lengthy string of pre-defined button presses.

That's where it differs and I do believe it was a fantastic addition. It adds a lot of additional spice to the battles without complicating the standard control set. There are very few (if any) entirely isolated "QTE"-like scenarios in RE4 (unlike Shenmue).

And word on the street is the muddy texturing is all sweet with a component cable. Now, if only they existed.

No no, word on the street is that it is the OPPOSITE. The higher quality your output device, the lower quality the visuals. There are many flaws to be found if you look closely, and a higher quality picture will reveal them.

Currently they have no leg to stand on, but wait 'til the haters finally realize that nothing in the game casts a shadow. :D

it's because RE4 runs in 16 bit color ... and yea, it looks like ass in progresseve, i kept tweaking my tv to get it right..
still good visuals tho

wait... aren't all games on consoles in 16 bit color though?

Those that said the cutscenes are as good as MGS3 need to be shot. You people are out of you're fucking minds if you think that.

RE4 cutscenes are nice, but its not masterful like MGS3.

I think RE4 looks grainy because...

They either aren't using mip-mapping or they are using it sparingly so textures in the distance turn to noisy static.

They are running subtle depth of field effects over the screen which add blur halos around far off objects. You can really notice it in the opening movie sequence.

The graphics are very poly intensive so poly edges are fighting with each other over who gets the resolution. This is especially prevalent on character torsos and faces at distance.

The 640x480 display isn't doing the game any favors. If you took the same game and had it running at a higher res it would probably solve the majority of the visual problems.

The 16-Bit display is probably the least of the game's graphics issues.
