The 2017 Annual sucked. Even forgetting it was a blatant way to sell toys, it's still 50 pages with a rushed dues ex machina ending.

Sucks too, because the 2014 and 2015 annuals were quite good.

I just watched The Fault in our cutie mark and it is BY FAR one of the best episode ever. It is also one of the best new character since forever.

Glad that you enjoyed the episode, Gabby is a pretty fun character. My favorite season 6 episode is probably "The Saddle Row Review".

One good thing is that we still have another special comic coming, the Deviations chapter about Blueblood, and that looks good.

Also, synopsis for upcoming Trixie chapter book.
The great and powerful Trixie is back in Ponyville, looking for a special cloak for her biggest show ever—she's sure her new trick will get her invited to the legendary Starmane Society of Magicians! When an accident gives Trixie the ability to turn ordinary things into precious gems just by touching them, she's sure she's stumbled upon the best trick ever. At first, Trixie loves the attention, but then her Midas hoof becomes way more trouble than it's worth. Can Rarity and Twilight Sparkle help Trixie reverse the curse?

So I just watched Every Little Thing She Does and it is SUCH A MISSED OPPORTUNITY!!!

At the start of the episode you see that Starlight can make a clone or herself, why the heck didn't they used that idea for the plot of the episode??? The episode wasn't even good, i mean, what they were thinking??

Since I binge watched season 5 and season 6, I can't honestly say that season 5 is the best and season 6 is.... well a disappointment.

It seems to me there are WAY too many collaboration writers episode, I don't know if that have to do anything with the quality but....

Maybe you meant "I CAN honestly say that season 5 is the best..." ?

It's true that there were many new writers for season 6, whose work many did not like, but I didn't mind it. For example, I think Dave Rapp's episodes were all excellent, though they are also completely loathed by some.

I like to think of Season 5/Season 6 as being akin to Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace. It's not so much that Quantum was that bad, it's just that Casino was uncommonly good.

Good point, and I can also understand some of the gripes many have with S6, but personally I hold both of them in more or less the same regard: some great episodes, some good, some that leave me indifferent, and some stinkers. As with any season obviously, but the balance is not so different between the two seasons discussed.

For what it's worth about season 6 I feel like many of the "best" episodes of the season are a lot more polarizing then usual. Going off the results of a reddit survey I linked a few pages back the top 10 most liked for the season was (In order) To Where and Back Again, Saddle Row Review, No Second Prances, Hearth's Warming Tail, Stranger Than Fan Fiction, Gauntlet of Fire, Top Bolt, Dungeons and Discords, Every Little Thing She Does, and The Times They Are a Changeling. And despite them being generally very popular episodes overall (Based off not just this reddit survey but also many ones done on EQD) I've seen a lot of disdain for pretty much all the Starlight episodes besides No Second Prances as well as Stranger Than Fan Fiction and Dungeons and Discords, which might put people off due to their slightly more adult style of humor as well as the potential unlikability of the main characters. I think the main reason why Season 6 has such mixed reactions is that

A: It's coming off what many consider to be the best season yet. Comparisons are going to be made and it's got tough competition.
B: A lot of the "best" episodes of the season are ones are very polarizing for various. (And there's nothing wrong with not liking them. Just saying that a lot of these episodes have a fairly large share of detractors)
C: A lot of the people that don't like things are a lot louder then the ones that do. (Look at the top 5 or so comments of pretty much any poll result on EQD that directly pertains to the show and you'll see what I mean)

Anyway, moving on to some news. First up, Season 7 is confirmed to premier on April 15th, when they'll show off the opening 2-parter. Still no news on what it will actually be about though.

Up next, the next in G.M. Berrow's (Writer of The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows and 2 upcoming episodes for season 7) short novel series titled "Trixie and the Razzle Dazzle Ruse" dropped today. If you haven't been checking out the series I would highly recommend it. Berrow has an extremely good grasp on the show's characters and is extremely adept at writing books that feel like episodes of the show. Although the books are primarily aimed at children they don't talk down to them and can still be enjoyed by just about anyone that likes the show. The one released today primarily focuses on Trixie as you can probably guess by the title. What the blurb perplexingly leaves out is that Starlight plays a major role in the story, as would be expected given that her and Trixie are good friends. (She's really only second to Trixie herself in terms of importance to this story) Another thing that I feel is a bit misleading about the blurb is Twilight is also mentioned as being important but is barely in the book. The story makes references to not only the show (The book's released date was pushed back several times, presumably to make sure it was enough time past the Season 6 finale) but also to her previous book "Starlight Glimmer and the Secret Suite." If the description of the book series has interested you so far I would recommend checking that one out first as not only does it sort of serve as a prequel to this one but I also think it's a bit better as well. (And I know what you're thinking. It's not JUST because Starlight is the main character that I think it's better) That's not to say this one is bad per say, just that I thought Secret Suite was a 9/10 and this one was more of a 7/10. If there's one major issue I have with this book is that near the end of the story Trixie kinda takes a back seat to Starlight, Rarity, and Twilight trying to figure out how to solve the problem. She doesn't contribute to the solution in any way and moreover I don't feel like she really learned anything through the experience either. There's a couple other minor issues I had with it but I don't want to discourage anyone from checking it out. It is definitely still worth the read and I would highly recommend it and the rest of Berrow's catalogue to anyone that is looking for more Pony to hold them over until the next season starts.

Lastly, the MLP: Deviations comic was released today as well. I definitely had a lot of fun with this one. If you were expecting a remotely serious story I apologize to you in advance as you won't find one here. Personally I think they went a bit too far in making Prince Blueblood awful. I feel like he was great at the beginning but seeing him act equally awful through the whole comic was a bit much, and although this is definitely a weird thing to complain about I feel like there wasn't enough variety in his horribleness. All that being said it was definitely laugh-out-loud funny to me at points and I feel like Nightmare Moon stole the show. On the outset the comic never takes itself seriously and that definitely helps sell the whole affair to me. I'd give it a 7/10.

In retrospect, season 6 felt worse because the weak episodes were grouped together and the good episodes didn't feel like they were breaking into new territory as much as with season 5.

Actually, I think that in general S6 tried to be more innovative in relation to what we could expect from MLP. The problem was that the results were not very consistent, and varied from very good (The Saddle Row Review) to middling at best, if not bad (28 Pranks Later), but at least I appreciate the intent.

An Amazon comic listing shows that IDW will be releasing a movie prequel miniseries approximately four issues in length, and the trade collection will be out in September.

My Little Pony: Deviations
This marks the return of Katie Cook to the comics. Or did she come back earlier? Honestly, I thought her claim that she was taking a break was code for her leaving forever, so I didn't expect her to be back this soon.

Anyway, this was a pretty fun story.

I'm not sure where Blueblood's pet dog, Bunny, came from, but he was an amusing addition.

For some reason, I always get a kick out of scenes where stallions hit on Fluttershy, which we only get sometimes in the comics and never in the show. Come to think of it, has the show ever had a stallion (not Spike) hit on Rarity? I can only think of the other way around. Anyway, this is canon-ish evidence that Blueblood did, indeed, find Rarity attractive in "The Best Night Ever", but he naturally acts rude regardless. There was some debate in the past about whether this was the case, or if he knowingly acted uncouth and wasn't attracted to her.

It was interesting seeing the Ponyville ponies come up with strategies to defeat Nightmare Moon in Twilight's absence, and they might have even succeeded if Blueblood was just a bit more reliable. Nightmare Moon explaining that she arrived early just so she could surprise everyone was amusing, even if it does feel like something added in after Celestia was written to be unaware of what was going on. I liked the way she was defeated, with everyone comparing her to Blueblood and her realizing what a monster she has become, thus reverting to Luna.

I did think the story continued past where it should have. Page 23 was the perfect ending, with Blueblood stuck on the moon and Celestia wondering how things are going. The stuff on the moon just felt like padding. FAKE EDIT: I was about to say maybe if it was presented as an epilogue and was drawn by a different artist, it'd fit more... but it turns out that's exactly the case. This part is drawn by Katie Cook herself, which I somehow didn't notice on first reading, and it's credited as a back-up story.

Anyway, favorite panels:

So Starlight Glimmer graduates. Honestly that could go in any direction.

I wonder if this season's just one big buildup for the movie so that the movie doesn't come out of nowhere as far as canon's concerned (not that they'd want the movie too tied to canon, given how narrow Discovery Family's reach is).

Obvious wishful thinking but I feel like they've spent too much time establishing Starlight as a character to just write her out of the show. What's more is that I imagine that the clip they showed isn't going to be the climax of the episode either just based on the fact that I doubt they would show the resolution of an episode in the promotional material for it. And lastly she can't be going too far if she's losing the cutie map in the next episode. At any rate I'm fairly curious as to which direction the show's writers are going to take Starlight's character as they haven't really given much in terms of what she's going to end up doing. I imagine they'll probably keep her around close enough that she's still part of the core group but give her some goal to be working towards that can occupy her whenever the writers want a story with just the Mane 6. (Like the movie)

Also for what it's worth it appears the clip is from a celebration of the reformation of the changelings. Twilight says that there's a second reason to celebrate and Starlight, Trixie, Throax, and Discord (in one of the shots) are all wearing matching medals. Just thought I'd point that out for those that noticed the matching medals that Starlight and Trixie were wearing.

More details

The elements of friendship – Honesty, Kindness, Loyalty, Generosity, Laughter and Magic – are back and stronger than ever this April on Discovery Family in the seventh season of MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC, premiering with two back-to-back episodes on Saturday, April 15 at 11:30a/10:30c. Additionally, guest stars William Shatner (Star Trek) and Felicia Day (Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) join the cast for a very special episode in late summer.

This season, fans will be introduced to fun new characters with surprising family ties to the franchise's iconic Mane 6 ponies, comprised of Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Apple Jack, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. From royal sisters Princess Celestia and Princess Luna to visits from Rainbow Dash's over-enthusiastic parents and Twilight Sparkle's adorable niece, Flurry Heart, the Mane 6 will experience their most exciting adventures yet throughout 26 magical episodes featuring five brand-new original songs and tons of adventure.

In the back-to-back premiere episodes titled ”Celestial Advice" and ”All Bottled Up," Twilight Sparkle agonizes over Starlight Glimmer's future and receives some much-needed advice from her very own mentor – Princess Celestia. While the Mane 6 are on a friendship retreat, Starlight Glimmer loses Twilight Sparkle's friendship map. Afraid her anger might get out of control, Starlight Glimmer casts a calming spell while the ponies search for the lost map.

Guys... the season premiere isn't a two-parter! It's going to be two slice of life one-parters! I'm more excited about that than probably makes sense. Also, though I wasn't too upset about a possible Celestia episode being a Celestia / Starlight episode, I'm actually pretty glad that "Celestial Advice" will be about Celestia and Twilight. "All Bottled Up" sounds like it could be a lot of fun, especially once I parsed that Starlight was casting the calming spell on herself.

We have confirmation about William Shatner appearing. Felicia Day was confirmed a while ago, I believe, but everyone seemed to have forgotten about her. Odd that it sounds like they're appearing in the same episode.

Just five songs is a surprise, but it makes sense with the movie. Perhaps we don't have a musical episode this season.

As for the clip, I guess John de Lancie was just being forgetful when he said he wasn't in this season. I laughed at his last lines.

MLP Deviations was bad. Come on Katie Cook, you're better than this >:[

Basically just a male Rarity but way less interesting and with fewer jokes. Too much text over the artwork too. God no one shut up.

Edit: Sometimes I wonder if I've kind of outgrown this show as a form of escapism. Was really nice when I hated my job and a lot of things about my life, but I'm a hair more content than then, and everything just sort of bothers me now. Which makes it really weird that I'm rewatching the Mentally Advanced abridged from FlimFlamFilosopher and his newer stuff and having a goddamned blast, but he's also just horribly cynical about everything. /shrug. I am kind of excited for season seven, despite really not liking seasons five or six.

I'm still not expecting a Celestia episode. I just don't see them doing an entire episode of Celestia talking to Twilight. I expect a few lines from Celesita then Twilight leaving to put into practice what she heard.

Ideally it would be an episode where Celestia tells Twilight stories about her past, and we have some flashbacks. But, they turned Luna's rebellion into a 5 minute inconvenience to Equestria so...

And it wouldn't surprise me if there's a bigger connection to these episodes. Starlight losing the map doesn't seem like something to rush through in one episode.

I'd complain about moving goalposts, but I would prefer a Celestia episode where she actually is the protagonist too.

I initially suspected the two episodes were meant to occur simultaneously, but the Main Six going to a friendship retreat doesn't seem to match up to the first episode, and it would be weird to show the episodes in that order.

EDIT: Hoping for a scene like this.

Whaaaat? Blueblood is "just a male Rarity" how exactly? He's incredibly lazy, astonishingly rude, has no respect for Celestia (or anyone else) and no tact or common sense. He's happy to use cute animals as a literal shield, including his own pet. He seems oblivious to most everything around him, including the near destruction of the town he is presently in.

He really doesn't have much in common with Rarity at all, and I don't really see how you could've thought that having read the comic.

I'm glad you're excited for S7, but I wouldn't expect a dramatic departure from S5 and S6.

Another clip showing off the new season of MLP, this one appears to be a short one from the second episode "All Bottled Up." Check it out here

Stray obvservations:

The symbol at the center of the circle that Starlight drew is similar to the shield that Starlight created in Every Little Thing She Does. Perhaps she just likes the look of it? (Ok swing and a miss. Starlight's shield in Every Little Thing She Does has Starlight's cutie mark as the symbol in the center, not a 5-sided star. It's probably just a coincidence)

The clip takes place in Sunburst's cottage, not the Friendship Castle.

Twilight and Celestia can be seen in the background of the clip, but they look a bit weird. I'm guessing that the spell that Starlight and Sunburst are trying to perform either allows them to speak with others through long distances or is some sort of portal so they can travel from the Castle to the Crystal empire quicker. The second one seems decently likely as Starlight did at one point use the Cutie Map to travel anywhere back in time, so using the map to teleport anywhere seems logical enough. Also according to the episode description the map ends up getting lost somehow and a spell directly involving it would make the most sense given that it's a giant rock and is kinda hard to just pick up and move, let alone lose.

The lack of 2-parter this season is a bit unusual, but if they are going to have a slightly larger focus on magic this season (as something like this clip would indicate) then they might have made that decision to save money on the usually more elaborately animated 2-parters so they could use that part of the budget through the whole season with some fancy-looking magical sequences. Or I'm just overthinking things. (It's probably this)

At any rate, I'm excited to see more magic in the show. I've always loved the fantasy element that the show had and I'm hoping that their plans for Starlight involve her furthering her magical ability so we can see more of it.

The clip is labeled "episode #1", so it's possible it isn't actually connected to the Cutie Map story. Perhaps Twilight is just having Starlight demonstrate her skills to Celestia, and it goes wrong. Or wait! Maybe Celestia and Twilight are viewing Twilight's worries about what could happen to Starlight if left on her own. I'm reminded of the dream episodes with Luna, so maybe Celestia has a way to visualize Twilight's worries.

You're probably right. Although I do think that it could potentially be from episode 2 given that they're airing at the same time I don't think that Celestia will be in that episode given that she's going to have a pretty sizable one in the opener and the second episode appears to be based on Starlight and the Mane 6 which doesn't leave much room for Celestia. Also Celestia and Twilight don't really seem to be reacting strongly to what they're seeing so it's probably not something they're seeing live. Others are theorizing that they're watching a replay of something happening to Starlight and Twilight has to fix the problem but I don't feel like that fits the description of the episode since it's supposed to be about what Twilight will end up doing in terms of Starlight's future as her student.

I think the idea of it being a manifestation of a fear that Twilight has (or possibly a vision of the future?) makes a lot of sense. If it isn't the second episode having back-to-back episodes be "Starlight screwed something up and now everyone has to fix it" would be pretty poor IMO. I could imagine Twilight having second thoughts about furthering Starlight's training in magic given that even after all the friendship lessons they've been doing Starlight is still fairly emotionally unstable and that if Starlight did screw something up majorly (either by having a bad idea that people weren't able to talk her out of or messing up an extremely powerful and complex spell) it could cause serious damage to both herself and others. I think that Twilight really thinking about whether or not it's a good idea to train someone that might eventually cause massive problems down the road could make for an interesting dilemma. Alternatively like you said it could also be a fear of letting Starlight go out and do her own thing as Starlight has shown several times (both before and after she became Twilight's student) that she's very capable of coming up with terrible and destructive ideas and Twilight might fear that she will do something bad if she isn't being watched over. In either case it would be cool at least for me to see Twilight working out whether she can really trust Starlight to do the right thing.

Screenshots from season 7, from Discovery Family's website. Nothing too interesting, except that Starlight and Trixie have more scenes together, and there appears to be a song.

John de Lancie recording two episodes for season 8, and he concedes that he doesn't pay attention to what season he's recording for, which is why he was unsure about being in season 7.

Also, something I'm surprised by, Weird Al is including "Super Duper Party Pony" on one of his normal albums.

EDIT: Ponyville Confidential released, a book about the entire history of MLP. It seems interesting.

Episodes 3 and 4 revealed:

A Flurry of Emotions premieres Saturday, April 22 at 11:30a/10:30c
After planning a jam-packed day, Twilight Sparkle also agrees to babysit her niece, Flurry Heart. But with Flurry Heart along for the ride, Twilight Sparkle struggles to maintain her title as "The Best Aunt Ever" while keeping Flurry Heart out of trouble!

Rock Solid Friendship premieres Saturday, April 29 at 11:30a/10:30c
When Pinkie Pie learns that Maud might move to Ponyville, she does everything she can to make sure her sister sees that it has more to offer than just rocks.

That first episode sounds adorable. Hopefully the second is more interesting than season 6's Maud episode. It seems like they're setting her up to appear as a side character more frequently.

EDIT: It would be amazing if they acknowledged the fanon of Maud and Trixie knowing each other, from that flashback in "Magic Duel" where the latter is shown working on the Pie rock farm.

His nonstop jabs at fashion/appearance and his general hoity toity ness reminded me of Rarity. A more Rarity Rarity but dumber.

I have a review copy of this week's issue. Hopefully that'll be better. Not sure I know James Asmus off the top of my head, but I've only recently gotten back into these.

We can't determine anything about the movie prequel comic yet, but I like the covers. The main comic arc looks interesting, and I'm curious how it ties into season 7. I'm kind of surprised Ember is appearing in the comics already. Not feeling anything about the Legends of Magic issue. BTW, there was a mix up with the subscription covers, which is why this one was listed with issue #2.

While we're on the subject of the official magazines, here's a janky comic from one of the European ones, which I usually post in the Community thread. This is about Starlight and Sunburst babysitting Flurry Heart. The translated version is below the raw version. Nothing too out of the ordinary, other than the odd detail that each pony type has a different diet as a baby.

Also, in news, "Legend of Everfree" song nominated for Daytime Emmy. There were better songs in season 6, but eh. The competition doesn't seem great, so maybe MLP will actually win this time.

Friendship is Magic #52
The middle section didn't make much sense, with how they determined where Shadow Lock would strike next, but the issue was a lot of fun, with multiple moments that made me laugh. You had Pinkie meeting Cthulu, Twilight getting excited about historical reenactments, Fluttershy being scared of mummies (for some reason, I found her line, "You mean the real mummy is still out there?" really funny), etc. Plus, we get to see Pinkie's morbid sense of humor.
cement_shoes-01.png

The art featured some good cameos. I thought Trenderhoof being at the newspaper office was odd, until I remembered that he was supposed to be a fashion reporter. Another unexpected cameo is Prancy Drew from the Diamond Tiara / Silver Spoon Friends Forever issue. In general, the art was both energetic and cute.

Silver Quill's review is filled with pictures for a reason.

Another season premiere clip. Not much, but we see Twilight make a wacky misconception.

Also, I just realized we should probably start coming up with thread titles for the season 7 OT. Any suggestions? Plus, any ideas for something special I can do in the OT to celebrate the movie?

|OT| Is this still a fad?

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic season 7 + MOVIE |OT| Is this still a fad?

I like this. It's the perfect level of cheekiness with the movie coming up.

By the way, I think we should just go ahead and make the season 7 thread also be the movie OT, since I don't expect many GAFers that don't already go to these threads would comment in a movie OT, and season 7 will probably end before the movie releases. I will make a thread for the trailer when it comes out, and that could act as the "non-brony" movie thread.

I agree with all of this. Movie discussion can live with series discussion (i.e. in the OT) and trailer discussion can have a thread that anyone can jump into.

Good OT title too.

I enjoyed the latest comic! Missed the start of the arc, but that wasn't much of a problem. Lot of good laughs to be had, and I quite enjoyed Fleecs on art this go around.

Feels like it's been awhile since I really had fun with an MLP comic, so that was nice.

I read a fanfic today!

Good grasp of the characters, nicely written and structured, funny premise. Drags a bit in the third act, and I wasn't a great fan of the ending (
Twilight agrees to date Dash despite not being into her because she feels like maybe she could be into her? That's gonna end in heartbreak
).

Shippy stuff isn't really my speed, but it was handled pretty lightly here. I rate it 7 horses eating flowers out of 10.

Good grasp of the characters, nicely written and structured, funny premise. Drags a bit in the third act, and I wasn't a great fan of the ending (
Twilight agrees to date Dash despite not being into her because she feels like maybe she could be into her? That's gonna end in heartbreak
).

That story caught my eye because the premise of Twilight having to deal with suitors is something I wanted to see in the show, perhaps including her having to deal with Blueblood. It's good to hear that it's decent.

For April Fool's Day, Equestria Daily is Sauce N' Pony Daily. Not saucy ponies, but sauce for food.

In other news, Pinkie has a previously unannounced sister, Pizza Pie:

Oh right, everyone remember to make bingo cards for season 7. Here's a blank template.

Here's mine (larger at link)

Some things I didn't get last time are back in, rearranged. My pattern is that things I consider more unlikely are put in spaces that can't form a line through the center.

I was planning on working on the next OT OP draft, but it probably won't come until next weekend. My plan is to lead with movie information, then go into season 7. I'll be working on my own version, but if anyone else is willing to work on a movie related header image, I'd be willing to use it.

Names, dates, and synopsis for Episodes 5-8:

Fluttershy is determined to make her career dreams come true with the help of some very special ponies. But when her true vision is not being executed properly, she must find a way to stand up and fight for her ideas.

Forever Filly premieres Saturday, May 13 at 11:30a/10:30c
When Rarity surprises Sweetie Belle with a special day together filled with all of her favorite activities, she quickly learns that her little sister is no longer the little foal she used to be.

Parental Glideance premieres Saturday, May 20 at 11:30a/10:30c
When Rainbow Dash's parents discover she's a Wonderbolt, they show up at every event to cheer her on. However, their unabashed enthusiasm proves to be rather embarrassing and pushes Rainbow Dash to the brink.

Hard to Say Anything premieres Saturday, May 27 at 11:30a/10:30c
When the Cutie Mark Crusaders discover that Big Mac has his first crush, they vow to help him win Sugar Belle's heart before Feather Bangs does it first.

These are all interesting episodes to me: In Fluttershy Leans In, we finally learn what she wants to do with her life. I think "Forever Filly" will go the "I'm too old for this kiddie stuff" route, but I'm hoping that it'll just be "Rarity doesn't notice Sweetie Belle has changed interests". I'm surprised Rainbow Dash hasn't already told her parents that she made the Wonderbolts. Finally, Ponyville's biggest stud might finally land him a mare.

That last one, so many headcanons demolished. All of them sound interesting. Honestly surprised Sugar Belle is getting a larger role.

Also, a movie teaser trailer is coming this week! It's going to be attached to the new Smurfs, and will only be 30 seconds long. It will probably go up while I'm at work, so anyone else can feel free to make a topic for it. I already gave mods the heads up.
