Yeah I get that. And the final two episodes brought back the show into line and I still think it's fantastic.
*But*, let me see if I can articulate how much I dislike these kinds of "what if/alternate reality" shenanigans. First, it reeks of fanfic, taking the story in unsanctioned directions. Second, it's like the old "having your cake and eating it too" - you want to present a wholly different version of a character if X didn't happen or the timeline was different. But that is such a lazy fanservicey choice, like, commit to your story, commit to your characters and the way the world and their choices have made them. I know the whole weird scifi aspect gives the show a kind of license to explore this zone, but man I am committed to these characters and *this* story, there *is no* alternate universe where characters are completely different, it completely breaks my suspension of disbelief, and again it's been done to death in the last ten years or so. It's lazy and pandering.
So yeah I will always think it's a major misstep in this series but, I suppose nothing can be completely perfect in this world and Arcane got close enough.
Been slowly watching it here and there. Almost done with Episode 8 of S2. Not sure what went wrong but the story is just... confusing now? Feels like 2-3 seasons crammed into one. I absolutely loved the first season. However, this season has been a huge disappointment for me.
Vi having her peter parker arc, Jinx redemption, Isha being just a tool, muh vander is warwick, hextech confusion(wooo maybe the worst thing), Ekko plot line, and more.
Just not too sure what to think since it feels like an overall juggling mess. Also another thing from the directing stand point that annoyed me(most people probably loved this though lol), all the music moments. Like it felt like they found a whole list of songs on spotify that they were compelled to throw into every other scene. Like I get 1 or 2 times or even here and there but it has just been a constant use of this. Just got tired and eventually annoyed of the director throwing this everywhere. Characters in the show just all seem all over the place. Between there being so many to keep track of. Not even done with the show but at this point we can probably cut off so much from the show with these attempts at character building that it always seemed to strive for. On a personal note though(just me not saying the show needed to be this way and I guess it still has a chance but doubt it with the direction things are going)...
Jinx should've stayed a psycho. In fact, it would've been really interesting to see the actual zaun vs piltover with Jinx leading the underworld in a war between the two. Maybe my expectation of her from the game being a psycho that loves killing and then seeing her in this weird gray redemption arc where characters like caitlyn are trying to be hard but super lenient despite jinx killing her mother just sits wrong withe me. Also at this point it seems like Ekko is gonna be the knight in shining armor to save Jinx from self implosion.
Now the praise, the animation is superb. Like I want more of that studio doing more of everything. Still a huge fan of the art style. This is one slick looking show. Hopefully we get some side stories or other perspectives within the lore and world. Even if it isn't lore accurate. Just give me the goods. Action sequences were cool and also visceral at the same time. They did overuse the "slowdown" a bit but not as much as the music thing that annoyed me. Loved me some Heimerdinger. Shame he is the only yordle that I recall being in the show. The voice acting for this show is also top notch. Even in scenes where the writing isn't compelling. At least the voice acting is so well done that it keeps me in the scene despite fighting myself to want to pause and do something else.
Just wanted to come here and share my thoughts. Feels like I am alone since the like 3 people I have talked to were kinda confused about the story but said they loved it. While I am over here disappointed by the show since I viewed S1 so highly.
