You can get the plugin there http://www.ngemu.com/download.php?action=plugin&id=37

The latest version of Rice Video plugin allow to dump and load textures from any rom.

People have started working on HiRez Pack for their favorites N64 games (OOT & co)

It's still very new so people are trying stuff (like the "mature" mario one, change font resolution,...).

For more info and update the best place to go is EmuTalk forum http://www.emutalk.net/forumdisplay.php?f=2

Fucking class! Just changing the fonts in the games makes a huge difference, I await the inevitable Joanna Dark nude textures with much anticipation...

Looks very interesting, if perhaps a little confusing to get set up. Even if it is just used to make the 2D elements look better, it will be a nice jump forward for N64 emulation.

That is amazing.

Even though they could pick better textures for Mario 64 and all (maybe?), I love the idea of this plugin.

When this gets more popular there will be like 50 different texture packs for the more popular N64 games. I can't wait to see some of the people's crazy changes to the game... and hopefully one will be actually good.

It would be awesome if someone went through and completely updated all the textures to one of the Zelda games or Mario 64.

Hey, there's a 32x emulator out there. Someone out there will.

i await good nude textures. Some of the nude textures i've seen in mods look like the modeller/texturer never saw a nude woman outside of pictures before.

Perhaps you should go play N64 again.

hes not talking about the textures being "better" or whatever than the original. its the fact that the textures themselves are pretty bad. and they don't fit the mario64 "theme" well at all. it's just a test shot of what you can do with the stuff, and hopefully nothing is remade completely like that... it just looks wrong.

Haha, I was only kidding about the nude textures btw. Not much point when the model is made of 50 polygons or whatever :D

Well I would hope the picture in question was more of a proof of concept of what could be done rather than a serious attemp as it is not faithful to the original artwork at all. So far all Ive done with the plugin is change the certificate screen of GoldenEye with a better looking bbfc and rare logo, and trying to make Ms Janssen look a bit better (but sadly the characters faces are very limited color wise).

Tain It's not dumping any textures. ;_;

I had to make the output director myself before it would dump anything, apart from that its worked fine.

What the fuck ever, that makes Super Mario 64 look utterly fucking retarded, some Nintendo fans need to stop and actually take an honest look at that absolute shitty texture blending.

The Blurry 64 disguised how bad the hardware was, this advanced texture filtering points out how shitty it really was.

Edit* Although this is a step forward, this isn't the texture pack that actually makes the N64 games better looking.

How come some of the letters like P V X and Z are still blurry? Is that just to show what it used to look like?
They are png files loaded by the filter. Maybe the filter did not pick them up properly.

Sure some of the specific shots may look bad, but it's a process with great potential. Personally, I'm surprised this sort of thing hasn't been done more with older sprite-based games. I seem to remember a variation of MAME that would allow you to use higher resolution graphics for Donkey Kong or something like that, but certainly not something widespread and accessible.

Milhouse-
Would there be any way to update the models? I know GC games are ripped and online... could you take Mario's SMS model and plant it into Mario 64.

I thought the first screens looked pretty ugly, but Milhouse's recent pictures are pretty sweet. I wonder how exactly does this work...I guess it's not really emulating the N64? That thing obviously can't handle those textures. :P

instead of loading the textures from the rom, it (the graphics plugin) loads an alternative texture in a hi-res loseless png file.

I'm not an expert in video plugin/n64 dev but i think it would be way more difficult to do (maybe even impossible).

You should go to emutalk and ask rice (the plugin author) if it's remotely possible.

You could transform Mario 64 into Halo 2.

Ha ha, that was a pretty bad game to pick for that particular joke when you consider how the textures in Halo 2 work. :P

I assume you can replace it piece by piece.

No. I mean, I highly, highly doubt it. Unless all N64 games use the same model format and someone figures out the layout of it.

That said, I DO think they could get around to things like bump mapping and the like, now.

I just wish they could find a way to change the timing of these games to allow for 60 fps. You can disable the speed lock and get a perfect v-sync'd 60 fps...but it runs at double the speed. I don't think there would be a global way to approach that, but for specific games, it seems possible that one could pull that off.

It would be pretty damn tough, though.

I mean, hell, the Doom engine ran locked at 30fps until last year, and they had the source code.

Edit: Figured out the problem I was having. Stupid directory typo.

I would MUCH prefer to play the games at 60 FPS instead of having the upgraded textures. I don't know if it would really be possible, though. You can't raise the framerate on SuperFX games either. Given that N64 emulation is coming up on 6 years old (and SuperFX emulation is even older), I doubt that it is possible to do.

Replacing models is probably impossible too. Even if you can import the static model, how are you going to animate it? Hell, there are moves that Mario has in M64 that weren't even made for the Sunshine model.
