N64 emulation?

after seeing the emulated OOT pics in the zelda thread, i'd really be interested in going back and playing some of my favorite n64 games in high res/higer and steadier frame rates. so, my question is, which n64 emulator out there is the best?

edit: and just to be clear, i won't be downloading any roms that i don't own.

hmm... i downloaded project64 1.6 and the only rom that runs smoothly is sm64. i'm having problems with conker and zelda... any suggestions?

Works perfectly.

What is your computer spec?

I've never understood the technical gist behind getting these old games, which are in lo-res/lo-poly in their console incarnations, into hi-res/hi-poly versions with these emulators. Can someone explain this to me?

My best guess is this - the textures are all at a higher resolution as stored in the cartridge ROM already, but the games downsample them to be displayed as lower-res/lower-detail textures because the hardware isn't powerful enough to display them. Then, these emulator people...do what? Am I completely out of the ballpark here?

Because frankly, why am I playing the muddy, low-res Mario 64 on my N64 when I can play that beautiful, crisp god-in-a-box I see pictured in the post above?

There is a community constantly working on the replacement of textures in N64 games. They take the old ones and replace them by home-made textures.

p4 1.8 ghz, 256 MB ram, and i'm not sure about the graphics card... it's whatever came installed on it already. it's an intel extreme graphics card... is my system too weak?

No way. Serious?

That's very cool. I don't have the devotion or interest to do that myself, but wow. That hi-res shot of Mario 64 is incredible. Makes you wonder what Nintendo could do with a proper remake! They love to "enhance" and re-release their old games - maybe it isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility to see a hi-res Mario 64 on a Nintendo console someday.

:( doomed! Graphics card from hell, upgrade immediately. And if your computer doesn't have an AGP slot, don't bother.

That graphics card blows, itÂ’s in my computer too but I upgraded to a 9800 Pro last year. It's not for playing games and it certainly isn't for emulation. Fiddling around with the settings won't do anything, time to toss that shit out and buy a new graphics card.

I tried running ePSXe with my Intel Extreme graphics card 3 years ago and it was pretty bad. I don't know how demanding these N64 emulators are but, you will probably get similar results.

project 64 still the best emulator out there? and what's the best plug-in that i need to download as i want to give emualtion another try

Mario 64 hi-res looks godly. I wish the DS could have at least boosted the visuals to something near that effect. I'm crying on the inside.

Can't actually get rice's plugin running... it says stuff about a missing .dll file and just loads up the normal dll files

You need to download BMGlib.dll and put it into the Windows/System32 directory if you want to take advantage of the RiceVideo plugin.

Wow that's pretty impressive. The only N64 game I can think of that I might enjoy is F-Zero64. Have they given this a "texture makeover" as well?

I've got a 1.7 gHz P4 with 512 meg of ram and a GeForce2 GTS/GeForce2 Pro vid card (according to CCleaner lol), it came with the PC.

Can I run this emulator? I was fiddling with it (couldn't get my ps controller to work) and was getting around 50 fps on the options screen with Excitebike 64.

edit--those texture packs look very interesting, i might have to check that out

Any way to get GoldenEye working on Pj64 with a keyboard and mouse config? I can't figure it out?
Yes, not sure how though since I use a pad. Try some of the other input plugins.

Should be available where you got the rice plugin. I'd have a link for you from emutalk.net but it seems to be down.

Where can I get the 3in1 box without paying 20 bucks for shipping on eBay?

That's ridiculous!
Got mine from Play-Asia.com.

bridegur: make sure you move the .dll out of your plugin folder and into the main emulator folder.

Now onto my question: Where the hell can I find a better audio plugin? This thing is snap-crackle-poppin my audio.

If only the Xbox could emulate GoldenEye's multiplayer mode perfectly, then I'd be set for all the N64 action I'd ever need :-(

When the game is running, goto the sound options and check the sync to game option.

Which .dll file? There are two: ricevideo.dll and ricevideodbg.dll.

Another question: is there a site where I can get these texture packs?

Geez, getting this rice plugin to work is a lot more complicated than I thought. It keeps prompting me for the msvcp71.dll file. Where do I put these files?

BMGlib.dll
ricevideo.dll
ricevideodbg.dll

While I wait for my other questions to be answered, I have yet another. Is there anywhere that I can download save states for various games? I really want to skip the beginning of OoT so I can get some screens of the night/day system for a project I'm doing in school.

put BMGlib.dll in main folder

put ricevideo.dll and ricevideobg.dll in the plugin folder located in the Project64 main folder.

Once you have downloaded some awesome textures, create a folder in your plugin folder called 'hires_texture'.

Now Zelda:OoT for example, if you want to load high res textures from that, create another folder within 'hires_texture' called 'THE LEGEND OF ZELDA' and put the textures in there. Why call it that? That's the ROM's internal name. When you load a ROM, the internal name should be easily visable on top of the window.

Go to options > settings and select the rice plugin for video.

Now go into options > Configure Graphics Plugin, hit the texture filter tab and check 'Load Hi-res textures if available'.

I'll leave you to work out what all the other options do, but if you have problems, post and I'll try to help.
