NAACP: Noose Put Around Neck of Black Student in MS

The president of the Mississippi NAACP is demanding a federal hate crime investigation after the parents of a black high school student said as many as four white students put a noose around their son's neck at school.

"No child should be walking down the hall or in a locker room and be accosted with a noose around their neck," president Derrick Johnson said Monday during a news conference in Wiggins. "This is 2016, not 1916. This is America. This is a place where children should go to school and feel safe in their environment."

Johnson said the incident happened Oct. 13 near a locker room at Stone High School in Wiggins.

Hollis and Stacey Payton, parents of the alleged victim, attended the news conference but did not speak. Their son, a sophomore football player, was not with them and they did not release his name.

The NAACP said the incident happened during a break in football practice and that the noose was "yanked backward" while on the student's neck.

Johnson would not say whether noose left any marks on the black student. According to a statement from the student's family, he returned to football practice after the incident, said Ayana Kinnel, a spokeswoman for the state NAACP.

Stone High has about 800 students, about a quarter of whom are black according to state figures. That's not a particularly high percentage in Mississippi, where half of nearly 500,000 public school students are African-American.

Expelling them isn't going far enough, they need to go on trial for assault at the very least. I would even try and make a case of the grounds of attempted murder.

This is why I dont think racism is just an older generation problem . I think parents can influence but at a certain poin with the way our society is so intergrated they make a choice to be ignorant and hateful


When I was in middle school I was friends with a white dude even tho his parents were racist . It just depends on the individual imo

He didn't enable it, he just pulled the cover off of it. All this stuff still happens. MS is the last of the confederate states.

What the fuck man. They can't slide by of this one, this is too far. No innocent mistake, boy will be boys shit. 15-16 is old enough to know this is beyond the pale. Bury them.

Insane. If and once proven guilty they should all be expelled and each of the families forced to pay damages.

I cant imagine the psychological impact this had on that kid. Just wow.

I know that these were all apparently minors, but let's not forget that it was their parents who probably supported the idea of trying minority minors as adults, so having their own kids be tried as adults would send a very strong, convincing message to those parents that they better stop demanding we treat black minors as though they are not minors.

I'd love it even more if the courts could somehow tell the kids that did this that they can get their sentences reduced if they can prove it was their parents' idea.

Hah! Yep. This is why I rarely buy the "racism is just ignorance" bs. It's an anomaly to live in the modern era and know zero about US history particularly about horrid occurrences like slavery and lynching. Yet people still latch on to those and return to them again and again to terrorize black people. What is a black student supposed to teach to another student who knows what lynching is, knows what it stands for and its impact and still uses it as a way of tearing them down and stripping them of their dignity? What magic words are they supposed to say to make someone who would do this and hide behind a "prank bro" excuse truly regret their actions? How much more does the student have to assimilate and compromise until acts like this don't even pass through his fellow students minds? Until he's seen as equal and doesn't have to fear going to school with people like this anymore? This is just one slice of the boy's life and one moment in the amount of racist actions he's bound to face in our country. Forget the fact that there are stories like this that occur every year in the lives of kids who haven't even left high school.
