Well since movies before the '70s weren't rated (IIRC), I would say pretty much any great movie from before 1970. I personally suggest:

Sunset Blvd.
Double Indemnity
Citizen Kane
(as suggested above) Casablanca

I have no idea what a "mature" movie is, but here is a list of some darker, more adult material that is either PG or unrated:

Vertigo (was rated PG in 1996)
The Searchers
On The Waterfront
The Battleship Potemkin (silent film)
Notorious
Citizen Kane
Double Indemnity
The Rules of the Game
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
2001: A Space Odyssey (actually rated G :D )

As one poster said above, almost any great movie before the voluntary rating system was introduced would be a good choice.

Shawshank Redemption -- but it's rated R.
Pleasantville -- PG-13
Finding Forrester -- PG-13

EDIT: Sorry, not much help.

I think because Stephen King wrote it. Plus there is some unseen male rape and they shoot the one guy in the pretend escape.

Is a serious mature drama rated PG not a contradiction?

... Why was that rated R again?
There are many violent scenes in the movie.
The beating of the fat guy in the beginning is a prime example.
That and language and some very brief nudity of male backsides.

Good for everybody: Gorillas in the Myst. A second choice is the amazing thriller Misery by stephen king with Kathy Bates.

Misery should as hell isn't PG.

I won, though. I said POLTERGESIT. Can't we just accept my victory and move on?

Edit: Sorry, didn't realise Eternal sunshine's R. Here's another one - In The Mood For Love by WKW

Why is this stupid thread still going, only half the people gave serious answers.

I was just wondering if it's possible to make a serious moving drama without sex and swearing and other immature subject matter. The answer is, it's frikken easy, since practically all the classic dramas and psycho thrillers of 40+ years ago would get a G or PG rating today. Hollywood should look into bringing those days back.
