Ok, this has been buggin me for a LONG time.
I saw this movie when I was in grade 4 or 5, so youre looking around mid eighties. Although thats only when I saw the film, it could be older than that.
Heres what I remember:
1 - its animated
2 - its sci fi
3 - theres a talking space ship in it
4 - heres the main thing I remember. There is a boy in it. He has a hilt from a sword; it has no blade in it. Its supposed to be the key to victory, or some such. They are looking for the blade. Near the end of the movie, the boy discovers that it doesnt have a "real" blade, the power was within him all along; he can create some kind of energy blade with it. When it is there, the blade is yellow and looks like its made out of lightning or something, its not solid looking like say a lightsabre from Star Wars would look like.
5 - It was in English, not subbed. There was swearing in it.
Thats all I remember. A lot of you guys watch stuff like this, so I figure if anyone is gonna know, you guys might have a shot!
