Nice. Now even Mars rovers can use the drive thru for fast food!!!

They took a picture with MAHLI, so I expect them to talk about it, don't know what else to be honest.
High gain antenna should have been deployed last night, so we should know if that works. Probably some more images and I think they may be deploying the mast later today.

That's awesome. Lol.
have you guys seen CNN's front page? damn I am not even going to read that story the title is upsetting enough

That might be close to the stupidest question ever asked.

Thanks!

Do you know how long after the antenna deployment they'll start the planned software update?

I believe they said starting on Sol 5 or 6 they'll begin the software update. I think they said it takes two sols per computer (main and backup) to complete.

I love that he references CNN commenters in his article. Really scraping the bottom of the barrel with that one.

It's incredibly irritating to see people talk about the $2.5 billion price as though it was part of a one year budget. $2.5 billion over 7 years of development for what we got is an insanely good deal IMO.

Yeah; I saw the title and just closed my window. Title alone made me angry.

haha. yeah, this morning i woke up and for some odd reason decided to check the "news" and went to CNN and saw that huge article on the front page and was pretty pissed. rather than continuing to be super proud of what humans are doing, they ask such a fucking dumb question.

At least there is some renewed interest in the space program. A lot of people I heard talking about this over the past couple days (including people in this thread) seem to think this is the first thing we've landed on Mars. For whatever reason this mission seems to have gained more public interest than previous ones (or people have really bad memories).

However, the communication delay really hampers the continued public interest in this mission. With it taking days to just deploy the camera, weeks before the rover starts moving and months before we get any data, by then the public has lost interest.

What I would like to see NASA do is send a team of astronauts to orbit Mars, send down a rover that can easily be controlled from orbit, let them collect data around-the-clock for a month or so, then head back home. Something like that should be feasible with current technology, no?

Once again, thanks! Can't wait to see all the science that will be done.

You quoted me before I fixed my post :p

Why did my post got sent twice? Can a mod clean this up for me?

Edit 2: The news briefing started. :)

Surprised NDT is so behind on this one! That picture came out in 2004 when the Spirit & Opportunity landed. :D

More great photos from HiRISE showing the entire landing site with heatshield, backshell, parachute, and the skycrane. Lots of dark areas around the skycrane remains. Bet it went out with a bang. :)

We live in a country that does not value science, intelligence, technology nor logical thought processes. At least a significant portion of this country, and vocally recognized, is of this simply wanting the destruction of government services, programs and entities. Because.... after all... they just want their guns, freedom (per their paradigm of freedom) and cheap oil.

As a result we will see most media outlets trying to pull in clicks, views, and shares on social media sites FROM these people. And that craptastic article exists simply to lure in these narrow-minded individuals to sell more ads. And it's disheartening that we have some of these people here at NeoGAF as well (even in this thread).

If I have a son he'll be named skycrane.

lmao, that was great

talking about 3 different types of land geologically at the landing site,

"I would go to where they all come together"

edit: well this guy is quite a joker

This is just so exiting! It's like we're kids with their new toys, lol.

Right now, I'm a physics undergraduate, so this is even more amazing for me.

Edit: Some twitter account to follow to get the last news?

My gf's "friend" posted it on FB. I'm moving to mars...

Keeps gettin' better doesn't it.

I hate how so many people take FUCKING SPACE so lightly. I'd gladly donate a chunk of my pay check every week to NASA or take a 50% tax increase to help fund their missions. I know people aren't as enthusiastic as me, but come on! At least be encouraging.

Can we make a goddam kickstarter for them yet?

well at least its off the front page :(
that stuff makes me sick, so tired of stupid... lets spend all our money on wars and question science, exploration, and learning
