I've never seen Hannibal, but it has always seemed weird to me that it was on NBC in the first place.

It seems like a pretty gruesome subject for basic cable.

Not the first time that a good series die after just 3 season with a meh ending. But nowadays there is a slim chance for a revive by streaming platforms.

I wish HBO would revive Deadwood :(

Did they at least leave the NBC iteration at a point where they could say it was finished if it doesn't get picked up?

Fucking hurts man. This is the first show that I liked which was cancelled. And I know the ratings weren't great but it kept surviving. Fucking garbage like the Walking Dead remains on the air and this gets cancelled. The fuck.

Hoping it ends up on Netflix. The streaming rights should have gone to Netflix instead of Amazon. That was stupid.

The state of NBC must be really bad if they can't even get people to watch one of the best shows on TV. The fact that they're shopping it around leads me to believe that they already know that the shows quality is too good for them.

Unfortunately, Fuller is signed on for American Gods with Neil Gaiman, so if this show somehow got picked up it would be damn hard for him to be involved. And Hannibal without Fuller---I don't want.

Fuller isn't the day to day showrunner on American Gods (Michael Green is) and he was already going to be very involved in Hannibal season 4 if it got picked up, so no.

Season 3 still has ten more episodes left to air, but from what I understand based on vague spoilers about the way the season is structured they'll have run through nearly all of the book material they have the rights to cover by the end of it. The first half being sort of a
Hannibal/Hannibal Rising hybrid
while the second half is
an adaptation of Red Dragon
. If/when a fourth season gets made it'll need to be original material unless or until they get the rights to Silence of the Lambs.

For the past two seasons they've expected cancellation, and so previous finales have been constructed to function as potential series finales as well from my understanding. I imagine the same will be the case here.

I wouldn't really call anything about season 2's finale a potential series ender :p

I guess you're right that Green is involved as well, but both Green and Fuller are co-showrunners. Even if Fuller planned on staying involved with Hannibal, it raises the question if the quality would've stayed as high. It also raises the question if Fuller was smart enough to realize they weren't getting a season 4 when he said yes to American Gods.

I'm a demented person, but that's actually what I thought when I saw it. "Wow, this would make a great series finale. Everyone dies and the antagonist wins, orchestrated like ticking clockwork! The end."

*slow applause*

Yeah, it's a downer ending, but it would have worked fantastically as an ending to this particular series. Brutal, visceral, memorable. The only plotline left hanging would have been

This is good to hear! I'm happy he's gonna be working on American Gods :) His crazy artsy style is perfect for it.

So like, have you ever met Bryan? Or, uh, been in the same room with him or anything? He seems like such a delightful chap! Just curious :x

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
Really goes to show that it really matters how you pace your series. I loved the first season but felt that the second didn't go anywhere. It's basicly a status quo season. The ending left me with a feeling of "okay, so nothing happened". Really hoped that Toothfairy would be introduced in some way in the second season.

Looking forward to the third season once it gets released on Netflix.

Why wouldn't it? He still would be heavily involved. There are many showrunners who balance two shows. And, again, they're not really co-showrunners. Green is the real showrunner because he's handling it "day-to-day". That's code for "actual, real showrunner".

It also raises the question if Fuller was smart enough to realize they weren't getting a season 4 when he said yes to American Gods.

That has nothing to do with it.

(I actually would've been a bit bummed if that was a series finale, since the show seemed so much more about Will than Hannibal, but whatever. It wasn't.)

I really hope this show gets picked up by somebody. Seriously my favorite show on tv and I came home to read a text from my friend that the show was canceled. Ruined my night. :/

It's a sad sad day, but it was expected if you look at the ratings. If it was any other show NBC would've cancelled it after season 1... I just hope that it either gets a proper ending or finds a good new home where it can flourish even more.

Honestly I'm quite surprised it lasted this long, I mean it's a Bryan Fuller show after all.

NBC deserves credit for supporting this show for as long as they have. The ratings have never been good. They kept it on for the passionate fanbase.

It's not a Firefly situation where it was murdered without a chance.

Yeah, NBC treated it well and tried to make it popular. I am also happy they announced the cancellation early and are letting the rest of the season air. I think Nickolodeon cancelled Korra mid season and streamed the rest online.

Of course it has. These last three episodes have been enough to turn lots of people off, even a rabid Fannibal like me.

It's better this way.

First, the network can't just sit idly by while the ratings continue to plummet - it has shareholders to answer to.

Second, it gives the crew time to make a concerted effort to shop around so that next season doesn't start production six months late due to NBC's procrastination.

Plus, it's a show much better suited to binge-watching than week-to-week, anyway. People seeing their friends upset in their social media feeds about the cancellation could drum up enough perceived interest in seeing the show continue for another place to give it a chance.

Agreed.

The finale to series 2 was phenomenal. The first 3 episodes of series 3 have been mind numbingly boring. Fancy shot, long drawn out mumbled speech, fancy shot, time going backwards, fancy shot, COOKING TIME, fancy shot, long drawn out mumbled speech. And all this in near darkness so you're constantly squinting trying to make out what the fuck is going on.

At its best it was really good, but I can't say I'm too upset about this announcement. I was very close to packing it all in anyway.

I haven't watched any episode of the current season, but I wonder if production problems are to blame. Fuller was very candid about how he had to beg for more production time even when things were already wrapping up because the powers that be were hellbent on making a cheaper show (as if Hannibal were not already cheap enough).

I've only ever watched this on Netflix, here in Canada. Never realized that it aired during the summer. Had I known I would have dvr'd it or watched it as it aired. I always wondered why I never seemed to catch it on tv. Never even saw a rerun. But I rarely watch any of the three stations.

I think it might be better off with a service like Netflix or something.

That's so rude...and

Seriously though. Hope they will find a new place for it. Which seems likely, as AXN is the one financing the show anyway.

If it was after season 1 or 2 I'd be pissed off. But going by the shows popularity (despite the low as fuck cost for NBC) I think the show has had a good run. I want more of course and I'm hoping a streaming site picks it up with Silence (which I'm confident will happen, please God let it happen).

So are there any petitions or anything? Seems like the shows with angry fans get a chance of renewal (like The Killing and Longmire). Hannibal fans seem to be saying "it was a good run."

Dang at the cancellation :(
Though not that shocking I guess considering it's recent ratings. Hopefully Amazon or Netflix pick it up soon for a fourth season soon.

The first 3 episodes of season 3 have been pretty slow and self indulgent. I just think people aren't that surprised it's been cancelled due to it not really being a decent fit for network TV. I'd like to see it completed.
