Short of the Batman parody with Abed, I was never really a huge fan of the Halloween episode.
Surprising to hear that. That's probably the only episode I've seen more than once.

This has really fallen off since the halloween episode. It kind of deserves to be canceled. I like Brie as much as the next creepy gaf stalker but, she can't carry the entire show.

I've only been watching the show since a DVR marathon a few days ago. This is a pretty ignorant statement about the show. This is my first time calling someone out on GAF about 'their' opinion but damn dude your opinion is horribly wrong. If anything the show has picked up steam and really finished nicely after the halloween episode. Maybe it is because I watched them all in order back to back but I felt that the show was a little shallow and barely floating BEFORE the Halloween episode, however, it really picked up and clicked with me AFTER the halloween eppi.

Our opinions are polar opposite. Wow. Damn.

Goddam. All this time I thought it was pronounced like "Jillian"

Still wrapping my mind around this. My fandom's been a lie!
It's a good thing you all realize this now. Saying "Jillian" can be known to get ugly. Wouldn't that have been a wasted chance!

The Environmental Science ep doesn't get enough credit. Halloween ep too much.

Don't get me wrong, I like the episode, but it's not my fave... the show picked up steam from then on for me.

Yeah I really liked the Environmental Science one too. The ending sequence (Abed and Troy's duet, Chang dancing with his wife, Shirley's presentation) was really well done IMO. "Here's brownie!"

Introduction to Film is also excellent. Higgins was hilarious and Abed's film was totally unexpected but really sweet. I would say those two in particular (Film + Envi Sci) demonstrate the potential of the show more than anything else so far.

The thing that probably turns some people off is that the show has unexpected moments with heart, and not just too cool for school humor all the time.

This is what I think the dilemma of sitcoms is: how to remain episodic (so new viewers can watch one episode and become interested in it) yet have an overarching storyline (so regular viewers get a sense of progress). I can think of 2.5 Men as being almost 100% the former: I can watch any episode and it's just Charlie being a womanizer, Alan being awkward, and Jake being a kid.

In Community it's a little different, or maybe as regular viewers we've noticed all the little references to past episodes (Troy's "Shirley's not my mom", Annie's jealousy of Troy+Britta).

The show is still pretty episodic.

But they do have callbacks to old jokes, but they are not vital to enjoy the story of that episode.

I would think so, especially after the debate episode when she let down her hair.

They know full well the girl is capable of looking super hot, but she plays this role that is almost the opposite, a bookish by the rules innocent uptight college freshmen.

Caveat emptor.
