wtf how has time gone so quick, he passed in july last year.

Yeah, I remember having a really good day. Was rearranging furniture and stuff while catching up on a TV show, in the evening took a moment to check GAF and was blown away. Still can't believe it. R.I.P.

It's not nearly a year yet. He died on my fucking birthday, so I should know, and we're not quite close to that.

July 11th

I'm happy he's been respected so much, he deserved it, and it seems he'll go on to be remembered for his work in the industry and how good of a person he was, which is great.

Think about it.

Iwata and Bowie passed away within one years time. That's a sure fire way to know pop culture is becoming shit.

I happened to be drunk when I first heard the news, but this is the only celebrity death I've ever actually cried over.

1 year after the death of one of the most prominent gaming executives ever, where does Nintendo stand?

We're about to find out.

I was just re-reading the article I made about the news yesterday so what timing there. :(

It still hurts. :( I remember adding my old drawing of Bowser to the Get Well Iwata Card. I hope he saw it. :(

EarthBound is one of my favorite games and I'll sure remember him every time I replay it. I'm replaying it on 3DS VC right now and I replayed it last year in honor of his passing.

Itoi had some very moving words to say about his friend, Iwata. I respect both of them greatly.

Shigesato Itoi on the passing of Satoru Iwata said:
"When I'm parting with a friend, regardless of the circumstances, I find it best to just say, 'See you later.' We'll meet again. After all, we're friends. That's right - nothing unusual about it. I'll see you later.

"You went on a trip far, far away, even though it was planned for many years from now. You wore your best outfit and said 'Sorry for the short notice,' though you didn't say it out loud. You always put yourself last, after you'd finished helping everyone else. You were so generous as a friend that this trip might be your very first selfish act.

"I still can't grasp what's happened. It feels like I could still get a light-hearted e-mail asking me out to lunch at any moment - after you've made sure lunch wouldn't disrupt my schedule, of course. You can invite me out whenever you want. I'll invite you, too. So for now, let's plan on meeting again. You can call me up whenever you like, and I'll give you a call, too. I still have a lot to talk to you about, and if I come up with any particularly good ideas, I'll let you know.

"So let's meet again. No - I suppose we're already meeting. Right here, right now."

Ugh.

Still can't believe he left so suddenly. I thought it was another troll at first, and sometimes I still have a hard time it actually happened. Iwata's still the face of Nintendo for me.

I'm still sad about his passing. His decisions, while not always the best, especially after 2011 still impacted the games I played and gave me so much fun. His tenure was a pretty good one and I will always be thankful for him getting me interested into behind the scenes stuff for the industry at large.

Time really does fly by.

There were some months at the Nintendo World Store where you could write your respects for Iwata, and leave something in his honor if you wished. By crazy good luck, I found myself in a New York trip with the family. Being a lifetime Nintendo fan I knew I wanted to head there a.s.a.p; sure enough, I visited the first day. The first thing I did was of course, signing Iwata's book with my thoughts, and then check out what fans had left for him. Lots of drawings, amiibo, photos, red balloons, bananas...

I didn't return to the NWS the next day. I did come back the third day, and by then they had removed everything. The employees said they were gonna send it all to Japan. I was lucky enough to show my respects to that amazing man pretty much the final day I had a chance to do so.

Flippin' Itoi always gets the waterworks goin'. Both this and he looking back on Earthbound had me tearing up. Albeit, I got more feeling out of an earlier translation I saw in the initial thread of Iwata's passing:

In any farewells, all you have to say is "See you again".
Friends see each other again.
There's nothing strange about it.
Yes. See you again.

I heard that you are going on a long journey.
It was supposed to be in the far future.
You never said it in words, but wearing your best outfit, you were saying "Sorry for it to be so sudden".

You always looked after somebody instead of yourself.
As such friend, maybe this journey is your first time being selfish.

To be honest, I still don't really believe anything.
I feel like you'll be sending me email to ask for lunch.
Just like always, you can call me and ask "If you have some free time".
Of course, I can always ask you too.

Anyway, "See you again".
You can call me anywhere, anytime, and I'll be calling you too.
There are things I want to discuss, and good ideas I want to tell you.

See you again.
No, we are seeing each other right at this moment.

No one could hold bananas quite like that man oh and the CEO of Nintendo stuff was cool too.

You couldn't have waited the full year, huh OP?

Are you the type of person that celebrates non-birthdays and 6 month anniversaries? :P
