I need advice on buying 2 laptops. 1 for me and 1 for my dad, I'm trying to buy them by the end of this week. The last time I bought a laptop it was years ago when the big deal was Intel Centrino M and I guess 256 or 512MB of RAM....needless to say things have changed a lot in all these years, so I'm looking for suggestions and advices on what I should buy, here are some things that might help:
For me:
- Will be doing some web development work and will install Apache, MySQL and PHP. I still have an old Student Edition copy of Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash, as well as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, if the license still works, I'll install those. Might mess with 3DS and Maya as well if time permits.
- Want to partition the HDD and install Ubuntu where I'll do most of my browsing
- Multitask as I will probably have messenger, internet browser, Winamp and Dreamweaver all running at the same time, ideally I'd like the machine to still run smoothly then.
For my dad:
- He mainly browses the web and plays chess. Uses word, excel, access for personal stuff.
- Won't be doing much more than that, he bought this Rosetta Stone thing (that's much cheaper than Rosetta Stone) and will be using that as well.
- Budget = under 450 bucks. I saw this Compaq for U$299 at BB and this one for U$339. They seem to be ok for my dad, but I don't know if they would do what I want them to do for my needs.
I do not want Toshiba as I had bad experiences with those, Mac are out as well because they're too expensive. I saw a Vaio which seemed ok, but heard their laptops are not reliable....any help will be greatly appreciated.
