So can someone summarize whats happened so far?

OP posted a few months ago saying he needed $200 to pay a bill. We all sort of gave advice like, well, if you're disabled you can get a deferment, and all of these other reasonable things. A good gaffer, Kipp, back a few pages ago, loaned the guy $200 for his bill and they had some repayment terms setup. OP basically bailed, hasn't sent any messages, and sounds like he's never heard from again. Mod, or someone, speculates it's for drugs and changes title of thread.

Kipp is a good guy.
OP sounds like a scumbag. OR, maybe he could pay his heating bill but not his internet so he cant't follow up and make payments.

Title changed since I last glanced at this. Was the money truly used for drugs or is that just speculation?

EDIT: Nevermind, The Albatross has explained everything.

Oh I see.

  • Guy asks for quick advice on how to make a quick 200 bucks.
  • Ends up getting lent the money by a fellow gaffer, Kipp
  • Gaffer isn't repaid and calls him out since he's not replying and hasn't been on
  • $200 appears in thread from out of nowhere but it's not from OP so the hunt continues
  • People advise Kipp to call OP by phone.
  • GAF mods sees this thread and changes the title and leaves account unbanned for the meantime so that Kipp can still try and get a hold of him

Conclusion: OP probably spent said money on drugs based on his post history and unfortunately Kipp is probably out 200 dollars

Bringing this thread back from the grave.

So I ended up lending this guy $200. He was supposed to pay it back 5 days ago and has so far ignored my PMs asking him about it.

I've got his full name, address, and home phone number, but I don't really know how that can help me get my money back.

Any advice?

And before you go telling me how I was asking for it and whatnot... Yeah, I'm naive and expect people to be good people. Luckily potentially losing this $200 won't bankrupt me or anything, but I mean, it's still $200 and I'd still love to have it back...
^ this is what happened.

My guess is OP needed funds for a New 3DS XL.

It reminds me of the pre-neogaf era when some kid came in here with a story of how it was going to be a sad christmas because his little sister was not going to get a brand new Nintendo DS (which was new at the time), and gaffers got together and bought them a Nds with a few games. Some guy was hardcore trying to white knight the whole thread, setting up everything, attacking peope who were noting strange issues with the story; anyhow the kid posted suspicious pics of a little girl holding a nds box, and I believe, never posted again.
Oh man, I remember that! There's been a few instances of stuff like that happening that's made me really hesitant to give anything if it's not through an actual charity site. I know I've helped out a few different ways over the years though.

Good on you for trying to help out though, Kipp.

That's good, but where's Mandrake when you need him?

Just saw this get bumped...that's pretty fucked up.

How do we know this whole thing wasn't an elaborate 2 man con?

Happened to notice Albatross' avatar in the work / life balance thread. I believe he is gainfully employed, don't see what he would personally have to gain from pulling a con. Unless OP is his brother or something.

Yes, I know your comment was sarcasm - but must defend the honor of the good GAFFERs out there.

That's good, but where's Mandrake when you need him?

Thanks. Wasn't going for much though since I was typing that in class. Plus gotta save the best version for Mandrake after all.

Btw, how accurate do you think the details you got are Kipp since you said a number of them was from your own detective work?

What about everyone of us gives ONE DOLLA to Kipp ?

I bet there are at least 200 of us who would do it.

But I don't know how to make this happen :(

$200 is a good lesson. There are many ppl in the world that would do anything to steal your money.

I had a contractor/plumber/electrician who took more than $10,000 and ran away. Never finish the plumbing and heating job he promised or wrote in a contract.

Reading the guy's history, the dude obviously does not come from the best upbringing. It's hard for me not to feel for the guy. I had some pretty rough years myself, age 19 to 25 or so were a nightmare for me. Part of my problems were my own fault, some of them were not. Going to college and having no financial support from my family was very hard and depressing, which lead me to making some pretty dumb decisions. I won't go into details, but I will say I highly doubt the OP started this thread with the intent to rip anyone off.

When I was 19, an internet friend of mine lent me $100 for a bus ticket to Dallas to play Team Fortress Classic in a tournament. I did not ask for it, but he insisted because my team needed me for the tournament, he was the leader, and a good guy. I thanked and promised him I would pay him back. It's been over 10 years and I still haven't paid him back. I still feel bad about it, for a long time that $100 I owed stuck in the back of my mind. I always wanted to pay the guy back, but there was a stretch of time where $100 was a lot of money for me. I'd definitely feel the loss of that $100, I would've definitely had to make some sacrifices to pay that $100, even if that sacrifice was something petty like a video game or beer. When you don't have shit and are barely making ends meet, that video game or beer/weed might be the only thing in your life that doesn't suck or make you depressed. I rationalized not paying the money knowing the guy who gave it to me was well off financially. That $100 for him would just make the number in his bank account go higher, while the $100 for me represented tangible things I would need/want in the near future. If I ever run into him again, I will gladly pay him back, and thank him for not badgering me or being a dick about it, as it just would've been another thing in my life to bring me down. Dorimukyasuto probably avoids you because he knows he fucked up and it just makes him feel like shit whenever he thinks about it. At least that is how I felt about the $100 I owed.

Not too sure what my point is, but, Dorimukyasuto is probably a decent dude deep down, just having some issues finding his way through life (and probably lacking some key guidance). I hope he did not start the thread or accept your money with the intent of ripping someone off for drugs.

Knowing what I know, and what I've been through life, I'd just let it go. Years from now, you may get your money back from him, with some added interest, but don't expect anything.

For fuck's sake, don't say his name, he's going to come in here and flood us with walls of texts from his new 'socially aware' persona he's trying to convince us with for the past couple of months.

Kipps, this really sucks. OP should man up and find a way to pay it back. This isn't the first the time that people on here. It's nice to help, but.. it has happened too many times I feel.

"Here's a big thread about gender issues and race issues and the holocaust! Do people like me again yet?"

Most people on drugs are probably good people deep down. Sucks to see it happen, I have first hand experience. They will go to any lengths to get their next fix. Kipp won't get his money back.

Where do the staff stand on us, the everyday member of this community, messaging OP en masse, telling him we know exactly what he has done and that we all insist he does the right thing or face some sort of disciplinary action. Could that be seen as bullying?

Who knows, but there's a reason he's not a mod any longer and tagged as thus.

Well sure, but that was long before his more recently being quite thoughtful and considerate in his posts (from what I've seen).

(Nice to see Tobey back BTW!)

I cannot imagine that would be condoned, productive, or necessary.

I only give money away to very close people who I trust, like my best friend and my sister.

And me, your other best friend! You practically gave me that Hulu+ membership for free, it was such a great deal :)
