-Funny is good.
-I'd like to get something with a stronger female presence.
-A good sci-fi series (not Ghost in the Shell) would be fantastic, but fantasy is also groovy.
I can't recommend Planetes highly enough.
In the not-too-distant future, mankind has established a solid foothold in space, with a moon colony and plans for a manned mission to Jupiter. However, the future has brought new challenges...namely, our hapless heroes are stuck with the least glamorous job in space exploration: picking up debris out of orbit.
Planetes is a 26 episode TV series with wonderful characers (including particularly strong female characters), plenty of humor (you ain't lived 'til you've seen the "Fee is jonsing for a cig" episode, not to mention the moon ninjas), an excellent storyline, and all the hard SF about space travel you could hope for. It's wonderful stuff.
Poke around the Japanese website and you can find video clips to check out.
I also second the recommendations for Hajime no Ippo:
If you like shounen action shows, Ippo should be right up your alley. Our hero is a victim of bullying, until the day a boxer breaks things up and inspires Ippo to take up the sport, kicking off the traditional sports anime formula of learning the ropes and aiming for the top.
I knew absolutely zilch about boxing when I sat down to watch Ippo, but I still found the show to be completely engrossing. Ippo's matches are as intense, great characters abound (including a refreshing lack of any real villians), there's plenty of humor (hell, even the occasional dick size gags work), and, above all else, the series has heart. And, at 76 TV episodes, plus some OVAs and a movie, you'll have plenty to keep you occupied. Ippo is being (slowly) released in the US as Fighting Spirit, or you may still be able to find torrents out there.
Finally, I also second the recommendation for Infinite Ryvius:
Think
Lord of the Flies in space. When a vocational school for space workers is attacked, the students take refuge in a mysterious spaceship and attempt to find a safe harbor. The large ensemble cast splits up into different factions, with rapidly shifting allegiences, vicious internal politics, and complicated romances. Meanwhile, the ship itself is something to behold, with one of the more interesting giant robot schticks in anime. 26 episodes of hard SF character study, available in the US on six DVDs.
