I've always wanted to see this. How does it rate out of 10? A short description of why you rate it that would be nice too :D
It sucks really bad. Plain and simple. Don't waste your time with this one.

while considered one of the greatest movies ever and i'd have to disagree with that, it's a movie deff worth watching and one you wont regret seeing twice.

Easily the best Fellini film.

Other recommendations:

Alphaville. One of the key influences on the movie Blade Runner.

More Godard. Yup yup. I believe most people consider this his best. I personally like Alphaville better, but I have a tendency to lean towards overwrought artsy sci-fi if given the opportunity.

Mentioned several times. Probably the most important and immediately accessible of the New Wave films.

An old standard that's not viewed nearly enough.

It's definitely a good thing that imports are so easy, but it sucks that you just can't go to a store and buy them. And if you try to buy used from, say, Amazon, you're likely to end up with a bootleg. I ended up accidentally buying a bootleg copy of Hard Boiled, and there wasn't really anything I could do about it.

Salo is garbage.

I agree. Pier Paolo (which would be the name of my band, if I ever fronted one), in general, is rather spotty as a director. Porcile rocks, though.

Oh, and I forgot a recommendation:

This movie is really cool and insane. Make sure you read some of the very interesting stories about the making of this. It's also, unfortunatley, the only Werner Herzog movie I've ever seen. I could use some recommendations here.

Comedy option:

I forget whether it's this one or Cannibal or Jungle Apocalypse that features a live pig getting blown apart with a shotgun. Either way, essential cinema. I get these cannibal flicks confused, but I'm pretty sure this isn't the one starring a naked creepy buff dude. I think that's Jungle Apocalypse. I could be wrong. All these are basically the same thing.

Kikujiro is a nice enough, but awfuly slow movie.

As for Herzog, Aside from Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo and Fata Morgana are must see films. Signs of Life is great, Nosferatu is worth watching, and maybe Cobra Verde (Slave Coast).

Dead

well not really...yet

Ill second this and La Haine which Freeburn posted. I still need to see Jan Kounens Blueberry, missed it in theatres when I was in france but Im dying to see it, despite its mostly negative backlash, seems like quite a trip and a fucking awesome cast including Vincent Cassel and Micheal Madsen

what are they going to change with Infernal Affairs for the us release?

From what I heard, nothing. At 98 minutes, it's already a very clean production, you really can't cut anything out without ruining the story and I'd expect the ending to be the HK version.

"In the Mood for Love" by Kar Wong Wai is amazing.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0118694/
So is Chungking Express by the same director

Yes. And it's Wong Kar Wai, not Kar Wong Wai. Chungking Express is regarded as the best work from WKW by most and it's much less melo than 'In the Mood for Love'. His 'Ashes of Time' and 'Happy Together' are also fairly well regarded.

Old Boy I heard (actually last night) is really good. Never seen it myself though. We started to watch it, but we were too drunk to pay attention, so Billy Madison was soon put on instead.

Once more for Shark Skin Man & Peach Hip Girl. This is one of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen. Top ten, definitely. Yamada is soooo good. You will know.

park1.jpg

It also has Tadanobu Asano (Zatoichi, Ichi the Killer), as you can see.

Big ups to Oscar winner Barbarian Invasions. I was skeptical because of the trailer, but it really is a superb French film about death.

If you wuv BR, it's worth seeing BR2. It's definitely not as good, but worth a once-over. No Kiriyama awesome character, though. :( Along with that, Tokyo 10+01 is a good mockery of it. It's so ridiculous.

If you like Hardboiled, check out The Killer. The Killer is unbelievable and it has one of the most famous scenes in action movie history (cathedral). If you liked Ichi the Killer, check out Gozu. More hilarity, less action, directed by Miike. The ending is the largest WTF ending ever made.

Anything by Kurosawa, no brainer. Anything by Takeshi, including BR, Fireworks, Dolls, Kikujiro, and Zatoichi.

I end with a highly overlooked movie, Goodbye, Lenin! It's a German flick about a boy whose mother falls into a coma during the occupation of E. Berlin. While she's under, Germany is reunited and the wall comes down. The boy then has to prevent her from having another heart attack, since she will die if she gets another one. I highly recommend this one. It's very, very funny and also touching the extent this guy goes for over his mom.

might as well recommend "fucking amal", a very sweet lesbian drama. i caught it a few years ago while watching TV, mainly because the swedish girls were so cute, so i couldnt just flip the channel. but the movie itself turned out to be very good. its a teenage romance that reminded me a lot of my own teen years, its subtle and realistic.
