I got the Pioneer about 2 weeks ago and no complaints so far. Just remember that the media has not caught up to the hardware yet and that Dual Layer discs are bloody expensive. Also, when I go the Pioneer it was $78, strange that the price went up.

if you're gonna buy a dual-layer shouldnt you wait until 9.4gb dual-layer burners come out?

I'm offended that you'd list Optorite with a Pioneer and an NEC. They're crap drives.

Having said that, both the Pioneer and NEC are fantastic drives. The Pioneer is a nice "Install and forget it" drive with good write quality all around. The NEC has great hacking support in the fact that there's a lot of hacked firmware you can flash with. It's also pretty good with a lot of media and has great write quality although it's not a very good reader and tends to detect errors on disks when none really exist.

If you're not interested in flashing firmware and what have you, get the pioneer. If you're worried about the reading quality of the NEC, it's not that bad. If you write to media at media speed, writes are readable fine with my NEC. The only time I get read errors is when I write faster than the media is rated and even then, only about 50% of the time.

arent 9.4gb dual-layer dvd burners coming out soon?

Ummm, they are already out for awhile. Dual-layer ARE 9.4 gigs(or 8.7 if you want to get technical). Most of the dual-layer burners are 2.4x speed. 4x speed are coming out soon.

I think newegg have a 8x NEC on sale for about $68 dollars and they are pretty good. Also, there aren't any 12x or 16x DVD disc out yet.

Edit: Ack, the one you posted is better, didn't even know NEC released a 16x one for 69 buck.
