The Autumn Wind
Well, I've tried everything I can and can't figure this out on my own, so now I'm asking for your help. For the last few months, my Windows ME has for some reason not been able to install updates. They will download fine, but then freeze during install. Up until now, I never bothered to look into it, since most of those updates were for IE, which I no longer use.

Today, though, I finally decided to be done with it and bought the XP Upgrade pack. However, I'm now getting the same problem with freezing during the install. I've tried booting in safe mode, as well as installing from the harddrive rather than the CD, but I keep running into the same issue. I tried rebooting during the install, and when asked to continue, received the error message to the effect of "Install cannot be continued, INF file txtsetup.sif is missing or corrupt, source 14."

I want to do an upgrade rather than a clean install because I don't want to lose my files and settings (no I don't have a CD burner), so I'm not considering that an option just yet. Please don't suggest that to me. It's strictly a last resort.

I also tried calling MS tech support, and even they couldn't help me. The rep suggested trying to find a bios update for my PC (HP Pavilion 8275), but I can't locate one. I also can't use the recovery disc since this computer originally came with Windows 95, and I've since upgraded to ME.

I really could use a hand here. And yes, I know my computer is old, outdated, and that ME is a joke, so spare me the snide remarks about it. Serious help only, please.

Too bad, I'm going to suggest it. Find a way to backup the files you need to save, and then... Clean install for teh win. Upgrading is usually a bad idea.

I agree. Have you explored all of your possible backup options? External HD? Enclosure + old HD? Network? Crossover cable to old computer/laptop? USB-to-USB?
