Neil Druckmann hints towards his next game

Please let it be TLOU Faction so someone else can be in charge of their next single player game.

Do we think the game will be split up in episodic content releases or as a single release like the new LIS?

To me it sounds more like a GaaS.
Rather than a "one and done" experience like their previous games it's more about a continuous story that gets periodically updated

Can his level of polish really work with a GaaS style cadence? Telltale was the only one I ever saw able to release new seasons in a TV-like timeframe and regularity. And that's cause they basically had no gameplay or polish to worry about.

What the hell are you talking about? Anyone with two working brain cells can see in Red Dead Redemption 2 one of the best written pieces of media in all of entertainment.

And The Last Of Us: Part II is just as good. Grow some fucking good taste.
Is RDR2 really though? Especially compared to the first game. Sure the amount of dialogue in the game is outstanding and they truly sound like real conversations. Those aren't the problem.

But take a step back and look at the overall story. It's not that incredible. Very predictable and telegraphed. As well as having Arthur not be morally ambiguous like John was in RDR1.

No matter how you play as Arthur, even if you play as a villain, he still feels like a good person by the end of the game. Where as John felt morally grey to completion, even when he send Abagail and Jack away at the end.

I Hope the game won't try try to be too mature and edgy like they did for Part2.

Also, Part 2 had horribly written characters as opposed to Part1; I mean Jesse, Dina, Manny, Isaac… yikes.
I mean Dina wasn't bad. Jesse and Manny were set up pretty well and killed off in really cool ways, sort of how I would have liked Joel's death to have played out rather than a golf club to the head.

I thought Abby and Owen were great too.

Lev and his sister were put in the game solely to have a transgender talking point which is retarded. And Mel and Ellie really sucked and were completely uninteresting.

What did you think of Isaac?

I expect lots of woke cringe forced into the story for no other reason than to "stick it to the conservatives", it's hilarious how the extreme left and right are so similar in their stupidity.

Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be the GOTG. The man never misses, and recruits easily the best talent in the industry for every one of his projects.

he's working on everything they do as the VP of the studio. He might have some involvement in the writing while coordinating a team of people doing episodic content.
he's president of Naughty Dog not VP

and technically no he's not directing TLOU Online

NOW I am excited about a Naughty Dog game. Enough uncharted and last of us, please

Finally...
"Finally"
I don't think that they'll throw away an ip after two games. Successul franchises have 3/4/5/7+ entries and they are around for 20/30/40 years. I'm sure they will develop more TLoU games after the multiplayer standalone.

I hope it's a new IP, and not TLOU 3. Whatever it is sounds episodic by that description.

I'd totally be down to see bigger studios and publishers make shorter, more experimental games at a lower price point.
Would be nice to have in between these longer, bigger budget releases.

I don't believe he is talking about episodic content

I think Neil is saying that the story will have more cuts and multiple plots/facets hence needing more writers

yeah, they have I am sure a secondary dev team that can work on it under Niel's supervision or a completely different dev team. but the main team they have should focus on creating a new IP as a new pillar for sony. we have been getting uncharted and the last of us since PS3 man. like.. move on lol.

Hopefully the other writers can keep him from writing half a good game narrative this time, and go for a full 100% .

"Structured more like a TV show" = many game updates with new content split into seasons = GaaS

He's talking about the GaaS TLOU Online, which is the next game to be released by ND.
This is one of the reasons why I'm excited about TLOU Online.

Naughty Dog's greatest strength is the stories they craft. And if we can get new stories every 6 months, then hot damn 🔥

This team of writers is most likely for TLOU Online (Live-Service game). Neil confirmed during Gamescom ONL that although it'll be multiplayer, it will have stories.

So my expectation is that new story-related content will be dropped with every seasonal update, which is why they need lots of writers and lots of stories (hence the writers' team).

I miss when ND did games with gameplay being priority, instead of story and desperate attempts to get emotional responses from gamers.
Well too bad, games are ART now mister. As long as people who hate videogames like Ebert are impressed with the medium, that's all that matters.

I love TLOU & Uncharted - but seriously 15 fucking years of them, please give us a new IP.

Factions & new IP would be the dream.

Having more than a couple of writers in a game production isn't new, but I don't like the connotations Druckmann using that terminology. Coming from someone who likes most of his games, and likes cinematic narratives in games.

Games are better than movies and TV in so many ways; I hope he remembers that. The last thing you want is a bunch of pseudo-intellectual "writers" who don't understand hierarchy. If you want my honest opinion, I think Grossman's influence on TLOU2 is what introduced most of the actual bullshit in that game's story. You're not convincing me that Neil came up with the YA-schlock Lev story or the weird "forgiveness" Ellie suddenly displays at the last second. And given her work on Westworld, you can bet that the pacing wasn't helped by her either.

I'm gonna hope that we're reading too much into this and that he's basically talking about a sort of vignette structure in a way that the interviewer and audience of this article could understand.

As a fan of cinematic games, I legitimately find them more entertaining than movies. Combing great gameplay with a great narrative is honestly the peak entertainment medium for me.

Keen for whatever he touches. I want to see how part 3 adds to the TLOU series. 1 & 2 were amazing so it's gonna be a touch act to follow.

Episodic sounds like some sort of new IP or as others speculate, factions.

I lost faith in the guy when he tweeted his love for the Star Wars sequels. He needs to quit writing. Just like how Dan Houser needs to quit writing games too. Both are ruining good franchises with their garbage story writing.

How can anyone like the Rise of Skywalker?? Probably the worst movie I have ever watched!

Maybe he was sucking up to Hollywood? Heh

How can anyone who has a grasp of what good storytelling is leave The Rise of Skywalker feeling satisfied,lol....what a fucking plum.

Neil's game is an open-world then.

Serialized storytelling used in a great deal of TV shows is the usual narrative structure found in most narrative-driven open-world games nowadays (see Red Dead Redemption 2, Days Gone, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, etc)

I would bet that you find the last jedi a great movie and the last season of game of thrones genius

Sony should give Druckmann his own little studio to make interactive movies (real or cgi), Erica style, and let someone else have the main ND team to make real games.

im just itching for a new IP from them, they're too talented to be restricted to the same franchises
One way to get new IP is to have them conclude one of their existing franchises. The Last Last of Us would be an obvious one. Uncharted should end, but wont.
