I really want to like Neill Blomkamp. He has a compelling visual flair and some nice ideas, but the execution just isn´t there. D9 was really good, but honestly, I think Peter Jackson supervised that project and tweaked it a little so that it became what it was. Not to take anything away from Blomkamp, it´s his world, it´s his story, but something tells me that Jackson was like a mentor coming up with some tips and trick because Blomkamp was a rookie back then. After that came Elysium and Jackson was no longer with him, and the result is a mixed bag. The world building and visual effects are incredible, but the story, characters, the dialog, everything falls flat. The writing is, in all honesty, complete shit. Blomkamp admitted that he got too caught up in the world and concept of Elysium and forgot everything else. I think it´s nice when a director is honest about his flaws and admits wrongdoing. Not many filmmakers do that. He even took a dump on Chappie when it fizzled out into oblivion.
But as I said, I´m willing to give this guy a break. I know he has a lot of talent, he just need someone to steer him in the right direction, like Jackson did on D9. His short films at Oats Studios shows that he can make good shit, but unfortunately he doesn´t seem to thrive in the Hollywood studio system. I really hope that Robocop turns out good because if this flops again Neill will have a hard time recovering his tarnished reputation. He is already labeled a one trick pony, and as it seems, he can probably only divert those accusations by making something truly good, something that even Paul Verhoeven would have been proud of. Don´t fuck this up, Neill. I believe in you.
