NeoGAF Anime of the Year 2015 - Voting Thread

Status
Not open for further replies.
Series:

1. One Punch Man ; An very enjoyable mix of sweet action and comedy. It could be argued is not very ambitious, but sometimes it isn't needed when it's a well made product. And it even has a pair of moving moments.
2. Death Parade ; the high points of the series in both storytelling and animations elevates this series to this position, even if it also has some episodes that are low points and the ambition of the series isn't really fulfilled.
3. Lupin III 2015. Great designs and good backgrounds and some classic Lupin affairs, with the right mix of classic lapstick comedy with more serious touches makes for a good entry in the Lupin saga.
4. Haykuu S2 ; A solid effort in quality sports anime.
5. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders ; The last 10 episodes or so were mostly good, I guess. In general terms I liked season 2 more.
6. Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers ; Not really a "solid good" series imo, but it was fun to discuss who was the traitor and why during the middle episodes. Last episode was a bluff, though.

Film/OVA:
1. Mushishi Suzu no Shizuku ; Mushishi-tier quality!
2. Hammerhead. One of the best animator expo short this year.
3. Little Witch Academia The Enchanted Parade ; Wonderful animation.
4. Bureau of Proto-Society ; Funny short with an interesting idea.
5. Sex and Violence With Machspeed ; this style is really better suited to shorts, yeah.

Extra: Overrated series list!

Owarimonogatari. Monogatari in general is overrated, except for a few arcs. This wasn't one of them.
Shirobako. A decent effort in showing at how anime is done. Pity is doesn't have a soul anywhere on sight, and from a knowledge point of view, I already knew how anime was made from some documentaries/making of, and the other part you can know yourself if you've worked in any office environment.
Your lie in April: hahahahahha!
Fate Stay Night UBW. Pandering eroge chuuni shit.

Notes, I already put Parasyte (and Cross Ange!) in the aoty 2014 list, so I won't put them here..

edit: silly me, I forgot about UBW!

You MONSTER! No soul? The show had a great heart in Miyamori! And when you add to that Yano's tribulations with her father, Shizuka's reflection on her roles in/around anime, and Diesel's struggle at writing something actually useful before finally adding Ema's slow growth from nervous artist to actively leading around the office newbie it's a charming and heartwarming show.

Bah. I know it's not for everyone but....no soul.....no SOUL? I just....I don't know what you're seeing here.

I think MY soul just left me. Shirobako no soul? The hell? With all the open references to rral studios, persons and anime? With all the passion for the new and the old? In was für einer Welt leben wir denn hier?

1. One-Punch Man
2. Your Lie in April
3. Shirobako
4. Sound! Euphonium
5. Yurikuma Arashi

1. The Boy and the Beast ; I'm one of the few that managed to catch a screening of this. Expect to see it on more lists next year.

2. When Marnie Was There
3. Digimon Adventure tri.: Saikai

Series:

lol

Film/OVA:

1. Little Witch Academia 2: The Enchanted Parade. Winner by default, being the only 2015 anime I've watched this year. It'd probably be #1 here regardless, but yeah.

Sjaying Shirobako don't have soul not making any sense if anything its one of those show that very clear the maker had great time producing it.

Btw not many people listing Garo :(

I didn't watch enough anime to vote this year, but I appreciate this thread for giving me soo many ideas of what to watch and catch up on lol. Thanks to everyone putting some effort into their descriptions and the occasional pic/gif!

I agree.

Your lie in April isn't awful or anything but its a very predictable, cliche ridden show. The series would have been a million times more interesting if
violin girl had of lived
because at least that would have set the show apart but in the end they went for the lazy, predictable end. The characters are fine and thats it. They don't bring anything new or interesting to the table. And the visuals(mainly the music scenes) are breathtaking...once. After seeing the same effects over and over they become tiresome very quickly.

And UBW. When people aren't fighting...just no.

OMG I have the same opinion as yours in most things. I will keep an eye on your reccomendations because I think we have the same taste!

I wish people who voted One Punch Man to be first should watch more shows before they get suckered in for the animation and hyperbole. No doubt One Punch Man is good but there are better shows to vote for, same goes for Jojo.

Why?, the series that weren't listed just didn't clicked with me. I only list series that I want to watch each week, not series that I am forced to watch every week (in Death Parade's case).

It's a tough year to write an Anime of the Year list for 2015 given the constraints of this particular thread because it's been a great year for short films thanks to the Animator Expo series but conversely, it's been a woeful year for TV with practically nothing worth voting for. For the first time, perhaps ever, I'd rather vote on my Top 10 OVAs/Movies and only 5 TV shows. Alas.

OVAs/Movies

1. When Marnie Was There
2. Hammerhead
3. Mushishi: Suzu no Shizuku
4. Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark
5. LWA 2

TV

1. Death Parade
2. Shirobako
3. The first five minutes of Symphogear GX episode 1.
3. Owarimonogatari
4. JoJo's Stardust Crusaders
5. Gatchaman Crowds: Insight
6. Concerete Revolutio

TV
1. Sound! Euphonium;
2. Shirobako;
3. One Punch Man;

OVA/Film
1. When Marnie Was There;
2. Little Witch Academia 2: The Enchanted Parade;
3. The Diary of Ochibi;
4. Hammerhead;
5. Bureau of Proto-Society;

A little surprised to see votes for Hammerhead over other Animator Expo shorts. It had great animation, but the nihilism was grating and the constant droning narration was very on-the-nose. It also felt like a concept trailer rather than a fully realized short like some of the others were. Wasn't even the best Mahiro Maeda short of 2015.

It lacked any subtlety and it didn't really have anything to say. It was like having someone barking in my ear about superhero ideals or something. Lots of people like that sort of boisterous grandstanding though, so maybe I'm less surprised it hit a certain audience.

I find myself agreeing, on a purely analytical level, with most your criticism. However, of all the Animator Expo shorts of 2015 I found myself most moved (and not in a pleasant way) by the unflinching grotesqueness of Hammerhead. On that level, I found it to be a very effective piece.

I also don't entirely agree that it felt like a trailer - there were many shorts that felt like trailers in Animator Expo but after viewing the entirity of Hammerhead I can't imagine wanting or needing to see anything else about the character. We already have a complete picture of his story and his (ceaseless) journey.

If you felt the most moved by it, that's fair. But even disregarding my preference for stories with more humanity to them (even something as dark as Flowers of Evil had a sensitivity for human longing and fragility instead of Hammerhead's coldness), I think I would have been more engaged if Hammerhead had dropped the monotone narration and been content to let the visuals carry the brunt of the storytelling.

It's not as much of an incomplete trailer as something like Iconic Field, but the abridged, rushed nature of the short made it feel like something the creators would really like to make into something longer.

For something as short as that short (lol), I don't think it's a problem. I would agree with you would try to do a full film of the concept.

Don't hate me, senpai-tachi.
srsly tho good luck with these gifs. There's a bajillion of them. I know they're inconsistent because I've scoured the bowels of the internet for 'em. I shoulda made them as I watched everything. Unmarked spoilers.

1. My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO!; Genuine is my new favorite word. Yui is the best girl ever. She steals all the budget. Runner up goes to Iroha. There's a whole bunch of themes in this show but a lot of is some adolescent passing phase. But the teacher says it the best. You guys are in freakin' high school. Not of this stuff even matters five years down the line.

You know when they announced season 2 and Feel was going to man the helm instead of Brain's Base I was kinda skeptical but not as much at the rest of the internet. BB did such a good job with season 1 (AotY 2013, duh) so it's understandable if season 2 will be just as good. And it is. Bless Feel.

Part of the reason people were worried is because of the character designs. People just weren't feeling them. They almost look like the characters in A Certain Magical Index. Same character designer, probably. Well, I like them. They look better now. Some of the stuff in BB's season 1 was low quality so we got this big budget boost in quality which is great.

It's great because a lot of the stuff in the show relies on visual cues. Without context, that teary eyed Yui gif is just a studio flexing their animation muscles. And Hachiman, man. When dude was crying right in the middle of the season, I cried too. Wtf man. He was so ugly when crying. Seriously, who looks good when they're crying.

Haruno and Hayato sucks. I hate them. Hayato is surprisingly deep. Even good looking dudes have problems. I don't care though because he's good looking. He shouldn't have problems. And Haruno's in university and she's wasting her time talking to these high schoolers. Get a life. These youngsters are already having problems with each other. Don't come in here and exacerbate these problems. Mai Nakahara, yo. She's got this ability to evoke malice when she's talking cheerfully. How does she do it???

SORE ARU girl no one liked. I liked her because Haruka Tomatsu voices her and she's one of the best active VAs right now. Well, probably semi active cuz I don't hear her enough. Are you serious right now, anime industry? SMH

The president of the other school with his hand movements. What on earth is this dude. I don't even.

People are always praising Saori Hayami and Takuya Eguchi for their performances and they'd be right to.

Ayane Sakura is killing it right now. She killed it as Iroha and the other roles she's done this past year.

And last but not least, Nao Toyama. This girl, man. She always puts out the best performances. I love her voice so much. Killed it when she's happy Yui or contemplative Yui. Easily my favorite active VA. Keep up the good work!

I still don't know if Yukino likes Hachiman. I know Yui does because that girl wears her feelings on her sleeve. All I know is Yui should be commended because she ain't sidestepping and goes out of her way to let Yukino know that she'll take him all for herself. Yukino's character in the last couple episodes sucks cuz she was like a timid animal. Yui makes her feelings towards Hachiman known and lets Yukino know straight up she is being a wimp for not confessing either. Throughout the show, Yukino was more proactive in getting stuff done and Yui was along for the ride now circumstances have changed. YukiYuki's image of Hachiman being infallible broke, her sister is a scumbag (actually, she's instrumental to this whole ordeal because in her own messed up way, she's trying to help Yukino out after all), that stuff.

So Yui cooks up this plan to take Hachiman so Yukino's problems like relying on him and her sister are solved and the group dynamic between the three are balanced. Letting Yui proceed with the plan doesn't fix anything because Yukino's problems would have been solved by someone else (the whole point is that Yukino grows up to be someone who can decide things for herself) so it's not like it's easy to say that "yeah you can have him. I'll just sit back here." She's about to take the bait and man it was awful to hear Yukino about to take the easy way out. Hachiman speaks up tho. He ain't having none of this.

I think ultimately, Yui planned for all of this to be rejected by Hachiman. Nothing gets solved when she goes through all of this. The show made it a point with that scumbag Hayato about superficial relationships and how love screws up friendships in groups and how it's better to keep everything bottled up. So it's a toss up between "do we keep everything the same?" - everyone keeps quiet and this sterile relationship remains where no one steps over each other's boundaries or "naw this is some BS" - we'll search for a better path and it'll be a thorny journey where they'll struggle, writhe and maybe even walk away with nothing in the end but at least we didn't take the easy way out" Yui planned for the two of them to see through the BS and take action. This girl, man.

And this all works because of the visual cues in expressions and backgrounds and the audio cues with the voice acting and the music. This is all done with some minimal dialogue too. You don't need everything spoonfed to get what's happening. It's like the Mad Max: Fury Road of anime.

SNAFU could be the deepest or shallowest animu ever. Well, I liked it enough to make my own interpretations of what happened and stuff and discuss it with other people (on different boards tho, sorry)

Annnnnd cliffhanger

2. Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend; I have this gif of Eriri putting on her underwear but nah you guys won't tolerate that so here's her looking away. And that's cool. Utaha was cool, then she sucked, then she became cool again. Cool again like rolling around Tomoya's bed sniffing the soul out of his sheets. Megumi was nice from the very beginning. She's deadpan and that's her appeal. And Michiru. Like when I watched episode 0 and she was hot AF with her booty shorts and tank top and she's all touchy feely. Then she got introduced in the show and she sucked because she didn't approve of MC's anime fandom. She was awful but she redeems herself later on. The show feels rushed here because I think she was only in the show for two episodes and she goes from BAD ANIME to o-o-okay anime's fine in small doses. Her bandmates are nice too. I think they're into the easily misunderstood sexual positions Tomoya and Michiru were in the final episode. Because really, you can try and say cool lines while in the lotus blossom position but- *arghblargh* thanks, Megumi.

Saekano's different from a lot of shows because the characters are sorta subversive in their tropes. Does it succeed? I couldn't tell you. Like Michiru is your next door hottie who likes making music with her friends but hates otaku culture. Her band actually covers anime songs and her friends are all closet otaku. They had to hide it though because she admitted to them she's all about real music and that otaku life ain't her. She's real good at making anime-sounding songs. Her bandmates are all "that Michiru. she don't know it but she wrote another anime song huehuehue."

Eriri has all them nice tsundere features that makes my heart go swoon. She's the shortest, she's got twintails and she even rocks that golden hair. Golden rule applies here. So her and MC are childhood friends who enjoyed each other's company by talking about anime and games. She still exhibits those tsundere attributes like when some new girl who is just starting out with drawing wins over the MC and he's all hyped about it. Eriri calls him out and asks him how come he doesn't act all excited about her drawings despite her being a well known artist. MC doesn't answer because that's typical MC behavior when they got nothing to say. Dude man don't lie to me. She runs away in tears like her dog got ran over. He shoulda caught on like Eriri likes you of course she ain't gonna like you creaming yourself over another girl's work. Eventually he realizes he screwed up with the help of his friends and cosplays to try and win Eriri back. She's all flustered and when she's caught her breath because they were running from something, iunno, she asks him "yo what's the deal with you." We get treated to a flashback where other kids are making fun of the both of them for always talking to each other about anime. Even draw that umbrella with their names on them. MC was a cool young kid so he confronted his bullies. Eriri just sat there though. Kids are so mean. Well anyway Eriri claims she doesn't like that weird otaku stuff to begin with so MC got left in the dust. Okay so it was all a big deal. Dude held this childhood grudge for this long. Normally MCs just forget their childhood friends and the circumstances that led to their splitting. Not this MC. This is like a 10 year grudge. At this point I'm on MC's side because he's right man Eriri turned her back on him long ago and she still demanding an apology for liking that other girl's stuff more? Girl, I don't know. Eriri channels her inner shounen and resolves to doing whatever it takes to make him accept her drawings as the best. Until then she ain't apologizing. I don't understand her thought processes, ehh man golden rule.

3. Wakaba*Girl; Dead serious. Every episode is ten minutes long and it's so funny. Wakabi is the sheltered rich girl and her gag of trying to give her friends money because she thinks that's the only reason why they even hang out with her and it never gets old. Moe is moe. I like her because she's got a good head on her shoulders. So like she's the voice of reason. She can cook too and wears thigh highs. Mao is, well, I don't know. She's got pink hair? That's nice, right? She adds "su" to the end of her sentences, nice quirky speech. She's energetic. I like her too. Nao is my favorite girl. She plays the straight man of the group and wears glasses. And now I find out Rie Murakawa can do good stuff. Blew my mind she voiced Nao. Never knew she could have a heavy voice. She was awful as Escha but she did good work as Hotaru. Rie can do it after all. YEAH

In the final episode Wakaba hears her family talking about moving away and she processes that as them moving away. She immediately thinks about her friends and it's too soon that they'll be torn apart. Who wouldn't. Wakaba has the greatest group of friends ever. Seriously, when she told them, all of them went to her family to convince and compromise for her to stay. Friendship is magic. It was all a misunderstanding in the end. Why the heck wouldn't it be? Wakaba has finally made some real friends. Friends she could count on to hang out with after school and just chillax with. I'd be mad if she did ended up moving. It'd totally undermine her development when she's finally had a taste of that sweet gyaru life.

4. Castle Town Dandelion; I can't find any gifs of Kanade by herself and the only one I could find is semi-NSFW so here's one with her and Hikari, who I also like. Man, Kaori Ishihara and Yui Ogura. Last time I saw these together was in Saki. Kaori doesn't seem to be getting a lot of roles which freaking totally sucks because her voice is amazing. Oh and shoutouts to Eriko Matsui as Misaki. She can clone herself up to 7 times and each clone sounds different. Incredible range.

I don't like the end because Shu became the king and he's kinda boring and his girlfriend, Hana, is the only reason he's turns out okay. I wanted Kanade to win the election because she's got a sorta good reason for wanting to win and she's hot.

Akane took center stage a lot but meh she aight to me. Everyone else in the show loves her though. She got her own fan club and everything and her brothers are part of it unbeknownst to her. Her best friend pops a yuri boner for her. I think she was voiced by Saori Hayami. Akane's voiced by Kana Hanazawa and that girl does amazing work so it's deserved.

Everyone totally played second fiddle to Akane. The title is a misnomer. It's Castle Akane Dandelion. Akane is one devious little character. It's all an act. She don't wanna go out? Sure. She loves the attention. When she goes out and she's holding on Kanade in fear of being all alone, I bet she's getting high off the attention. And she plays it up really well. Kanade bursts to running and she quickly catches up to her to make it all look like she needs her. This is all just speculation tho.

If you add up all the time the other characters got it'd be one episode each. The show went on for 12 episodes and she's got about eight siblings or something. An episode each and four more for Akane. That ain't how ratios work. They're all main characters!

5. Sound! Euphonium; Asuka was awesome at first, but now she sucks. Can't decide between Reina, Natsuki (my favorite sleepy girl) and Kumiko. Bassoon girl too. She was hiding the whole time tho :(

Asuka sucks because she don't like drama in her club. I don't like drama too except in rare instances. Well, drama happened because she sat around doing jack. What is this girl even complaining about?

About the yuri undertones, yeah I got nothing. I didn't really think about it all that much because there's nothing there. Reina's a goof. She doesn't know nothing about proper friendship rules and whatnot. And Kumiko's this aloof girl so never mind her to understand anything either.

At first Natsuki don't care about band like a honey badger and sleeps but seeing her kouhai be serious made her straighten her act out. She be practicing and stuff. She fails her audition though and she invites Kumiko (the one who takes her spot) for lunch. Girl was worried she was gonna get smacked but it was dumb of me to think that because Natsuki isn't that kinda girl. Instead she praises Kumiko and Kumiko realizes this and comforts her senpai back because that's what kouhais do.

6. Shirobako; Ema and Shizuka best girls. The show went for 24 episodes treating Shizuka so badly. Do the producers hate redheads or something? Argh. I teared up in the end when she got a role in the show everyone else was working on. About freaking time. What an injustice. She tears up but her best friend Aoi tears up even more. Because even she knows Zuka-chan's been treated like garbage the whole time. What else. Oh yeah, I like everyone else too. Midori's speech mannerisms. Oi-chan-senpai, Zuka-chan-senpai, ummppphhhh so cute. I think she drinks all that beer there.

There was this one time when it looked like Shizuka was about to get a role in the show but she gets dropped because the producers don't know any better. I would have hired Shizuka right there. And then she waits and waits for her phone call and it doesn't come and she drinks her night away. So awful. I lovehate this show.

Shirobako's all happy and there are glimpses when it's bad and not-so-happy. The reverse is probably true in real life. Lots of shaming and finger pointing and stress. I can't deal with that so props to the people who bring us anime from Japan.

7. Chivalry of a Failed Knight; Here's Shizuku giving her onii-chama a long kiss. I like this scene (yeah sure, for the saliva swapping) because of the background characters. They're reacting like how we would. Look at that dude holding his head. Looks like he just done witnessed the most appalling thing. She backs off eventually because Stella's cool.

This show is a clone of that other high school tech show. They even start the same way with walking into girls changing and the fanservice shots. Failed Knight's better because it has Stella and MC and they end up together and it's unbelievably believable despite them getting together a couple episodes in. I dropped the other show. Nothing happened anyway. It's got Nao Toyama though... but FK also has Nao Toyama... hmmmmmm

8. The Eden of Grisaia; JB best girl. At this point, the story doesn't try to be coherent. I don't really care though. Makina becomes a master sniper, like what? In the end, MC lives on an island with his harem. And what an awesome harem it is. I'm linking it tho. Sooooooo lucky. Poor JB. She was taken without her consent. This part is pretty gross, but the anime plays it off like it's nothing.

Yuuji's had a hard knock life. But dude is still alive and kicking. I think that's what draws the girls to them. Even if they haven't heard his story before. One look at him and instantly they'd think "wow, dude's seen some stuff in his life" The series ends with him murderizing the dude who is pretty much half of the reason his life was horrible. Good for him.

9. Owarimonogatari; Ougi is weird. Kaori Mizuhashi saves her though.

Shaft continues to be the defacto animation studio of the world. I'd put this higher but iunno I've seen a lot of monogatari. I'd lump them all as one show and it wouldn't be fair to the other anime in their respective years if I kept thinking each and every monogatari to be the best in their year. So yeah they're all kinda the same. Even the fanservice stuff that's in your face in Nise. I could watch any episode from any of the seasons and I wouldn't be able to differentiate.

10. Overlord; Nabe best girl. Really like girls with ponytails. I like being OP in games so it's about time we get a show that depicts power perfectly. MC and most of his team are lvl 100. The folks outside are lvl 30 at best. It's awesome. MC is cautious as heck because even though he's lvl 100 he's not entirely sure if that level carried on to the new world he's in. He's not sure if his magic is as potent, if his items work as intended, or even if the old world rules apply to the new world at all. And it's kinda suspenseful too like I know the MC and his cohorts are the baddest, meanest, strongest people out right now but since he's so wary, I look at every encounter he has like they might be stronger than him too. It doesn't happen though. When the evil empire priest dude busts his super rare crystal gem to summon an angel and I'm like "oh no OP might need to get serious" and it turns out it can't do anything to Ainz I let out this laugh like "my man destroy this weakling." Ainz uses this cool black hole attack and the enemy side's quaking in their boots. "b-b-but that was the super rare crystal gem thing how did he beat it so easily." SO AWESOME. Near the end, the two main antagonists are talking garbage then Nabe and Ainz are like "hahah" and wrecks them. Aoi Yuuki does a crazy good job at voicing crazy. If you wanna hear what someone sounds like getting a soulcrushing uguu hug, watch this. man, I got this cool Albedo gif where she's hugging her Ainz bodypillow but semi-NSFW :(

And then it turns out his underling is actually stronger than him and he only manages to beat her because of Batman prep time. I get that it's because he's ain't built for 1v1 or whatever but still. Say you're an accountant for some odd years and there's this girl who's been one for decades so there's this expectation that she should be better at handling numbers than you. Then again, I don't expect most basketball coaches to better at playing the game than actual players. Some kinda false equivalence garbage, whatever.

Honorable Mentions:

x. Prison School; I'd post gifs of Meiko but they're all NSFW. So here's one of Chiyo cuz I like her too. Everyone liked Hana. I thought she was OK. where my fire resistant jacket at...

x. Actually, I Am; can't decide between Nagisa and Shiho, the president and werewolf respectively. I got this perfect gif of both them but it's NSFW since it's Shiho rubbing Nagisa's butt. Instead, I got this one of Shiho showing off her feminine wiles while Yoko looks on. MC taking it all in.

x. Yuru Yuri San☆Hai!; Same girls, different fun. Ayano, best girl. Her, or Himawari, or Kyouko

x. Gate: Thus the JSDF Fought There!; Risa Taneda is insanely good at giggling. Nao Toyama is in here too <3 I think the writer is some military dude and the whole thing is just him projecting Japan to be some sorta military superpower. Stop, man. Stop the politics. You wrote a shinigami loli named Rory, a slender elf girl with a penchant for jeans and a human witch girl (I shouldn't be putting her in here with the fantasy characters despite being human but whatever) into the story. You ain't fooling me.

x. Sky Wizards Academy; Nao Toyama round 2 <3 Rico just loves ogling herself and she'd be right to because she knows she's hot stuff. Everyone hates the MC because he's not into fighting no more/ Jokes on them because he's cool as heck. He's got this similar power to the bugs that's constantly attacking the city but it leaves him wasted when he's using it too much. Not everyone knows this so everyone treats him like garbage except the team he's training and the old teammates. Dude man I just wish he showed off his cool powers and show these punks he can handle his. He doesn't end up handling his tho because he puts up a fight in the end against the dude obsessed with Yuri's booty and it's understandable since Risa Taneda's voice is mesmerizing and gets beat but his team comes through to save the day.

x. Non Non Biyori Repeat; I really have trouble remembering what happens in these SoL shows.

Well, I do remember something heart-attack causing but it happened in season 1.

Candy Shop and baby Renge

x. Hello! Kiniro Mosaic; See Non Non Biyori.

Did we get a musical at the end of this show? I know we did for season 1. I remember because Risa Taneda's short singing as a mermaid was real nice. Again, I linked something from a first season again.

x. Working!!!; A lot of stuff happened. Finally. I feel exactly like Aoi does.

x. The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls; Do I even have a favorite girl? I like everyone about equally.

Sorry for your internet.

Again, I agree the narration was not only needless but it actually detracted from the overall strength of the piece. I rate the work despite it flaws.
I am very interested in reading your thoughts.
Well, I must confess that my views on the series haven't been as carefully constructed as I'd like because I really haven't got the time to construct a decent post on the show.

Death Parade resides at the top of my AOTY list almost by default because there haven't been that many shows this year that I felt really delivered on a visual level (NB: I have not watched KyoAni's TV show). Even shows which I really enjoyed, such as Shirobako, are constructed in a tiresomely pedestrian manner. Death Parade, on the other, not only delivers something fresh but it features numerous outstanding sequences which I can still recall today (such as the ice-skating sequence and the finale to episode 9). When the show worked it was astounding - I was truly enraptured by its beauty and power.

Unfortunately, the show was rather inconsistent. Death Parade is essentially an anthology work - a different story each week (nearly). The quality of these arcs varied significantly and most of them involved a fairly significant dose of melodrama (which I'm personally fine with). Beyond the problem with fluctuating quality of the series I felt that the overarching plot of the series delivered a resolution of sorts for our main characters but the number of lose elements left floating around was a little baffling and it made me question why so much time was devoted to a meta-story when they should have been focusing on allocating more precious time to the one-off stories.

Still, despite these flaws (and as a result of the pitiful competition this year) I still rate the show highly purely of the strength of the show's highest highs.

I am still working my way through shows, but in addition to Sound Euphonium (which really delivers visually, especially if you're interested in music and musical instruments), I would say Shounen Hollywood, Kagewani, Haikyuu, Teekyuu, Show by Rock, and Osomatsu-san are strong visually in various ways.

Serious question: Is Ninja Slayer considered a Series or OVA because it was a web series and not a regular one on TV?

Series; it has multiple episodes. Would we exclude Netflix original shows from TV show of the year?

Yeah, well, Robot Girls Z+ also has several episodes! And at leas tI would put that into OVAs, but eh, I haven't nominated that anyways. xD
Okay, then I think I am done.

I would agree on Teekyu, I haven;t seen [B.Osomatu-san[/B] yet.

2014's AOTY List

2015 AOTY List

1. Gatchaman Crowds Insight; This year I watched both Gatchaman Crowds and Insight, so I'm kinda lumping them both in this vote. I love when all my expectations are completely turned upside down: from Super Sentai show to something entirely different, Crowds delivered in the plot, soundtrack, and artstyle department. I adore this series, also Berg Katze's VA was god-tier.
2. One Punch Man; The most hype I've felt watching a show since Gurren Lagann, OPM absolutely delivered from beginning to end. I hope Murata saves us from the Madhouse curse.
3. Parasyte; Very mature series with lots of action and very little tropes/bullshit. You can clearly see that the manga was written in the 80s, and thank god for that.
4. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders: Battle in Egypt; A great conclusion to one of my favorite anime series of all time. While the first half of Stardust Crusaders was kinda meh, once
DIO
showed up you knew shit was going down.
5. Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist; Very funny and full of stupid innuendo, I definitely laughed my ass off at all the awkwardness of this show. Anna absolutely made Shimoneta for me, may her VA rest in piece. :(
6. Himouto! Umaru-chan; Started very funny but ended up becoming kinda dull towards the end. Still gets a mention for the hilarious gifs.

1. When Marnie Was There; Ghibli's last hurrah and a worthy movie to end the studio's legacy. I probably enjoyed Marnie more than TWR and Kaguya-hime from the previous years. Even if Ghibli's dead now, I'm really looking forward to what Yonebayashi does next.
2. Digimon Adventure tri. 1: Saikai; Good nostalgia throwback, a bit uneven with the pacing and animation but I still left satisfied. Also, props to Crunchyroll for making this available for steaming on day 1.

TV Series:

1. Shokugeki no Soma; Shounen + Cooking is a winning combination. Very faithful to the manga with no filler. It's one of the few series I prefer to watch on anime instead of reading the manga. My Show of the year.

2. Prison School; Very faithful to the manga in terms of art and overall direction. Was funny as hell.

3. Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans; Although not finished, it's the best Gundam I've seen yet.

4. Rakudai Kishi no Eiyuutan; Yeah, it's pervy, but surprisingly well done. At least for the main pairing, they didn't beat around the bush like many other series do.

5. Ushio to Tora; Very old school shounen which I enjoyed.

6. Yamada Kun and the Seven Witches; Enjoyed this a lot too.

7. You lie in April; Whilst I enjoyed this, I thought it was kinda flawed and a bit too predictable. Still, it was amazingly animated.

Unfortunately due to time I can't put thoughts down for my nominations.

1. One Punch Man
2. Death Parade
3. Shirobako
4. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders: Egypt Arc
5. Ushio and Tora
6. Shogeki no Soma (Food Wars)
7. Plastic Memories
8. Assassination Classroom
9. Blood Blockade Battlefront
10. My Love Story!

Forced? Is it your job?

There's different kind of series I watch, series I like and watch every week (OPM, AC, Parasyte, Gintama), series I like but I wait to see a bunch in a date (SnK, DBS, One Piece) and series I don't like, I feel forced to watch because I started it and I just drop it completely after a couple episodes (Death Parade).

1. Fafner: Exodus;
More people seriously need to watch this. Yes, I understand that the investment of having to watch a 2004 show, a 2005 prequel OVA, and a 2010 movie is a hurdle, but this is actually the best show that aired this year. It took everything that was great about its prequels (well-developed cast, UNDERSTANDING and family themes done correctly, impactful and relevant deaths, wonderful soundtrack, well-done emotional drama) and continues it, while also greatly improving everything subpar (weak first half, art that suffered from early digital coloring, animation in general, and mecha action scenes).

And before you ask, yes, it uses CG for the majority of the mecha action. No, it's not terrible and probably one of the best examples of CG done right in TV mecha anime.

2. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders - Egypt Arc; It's a JoJo's show. The more unique powers displayed by the Stands during this arc was a lot funner to watch than the prior arc in Stardust Crusaders.

3. Yona of the Dawn; Fantasy shoujo that has somewhat of a reverse harem situation, but really interesting to watch the growth of the initially "weak and vulnerable" princess into someone of action and presence.

4. One Punch Man; I might have put this higher had I not already read the manga. The animation was a spectacle to watch, but it was hard to get excited over the same things I already read.

5. Garo: The Animation; I remember a somewhat weaker first half, but ended up really great after a while. The dynamics between the two leads, as well as the spiraling downfall then growth of Leon was great.

6. Shirobako; It was interesting getting a (probably somewhat exaggerated) look at the anime-making process. And I'm always a sucker for a decent-sized cast where every character has some relevance.

7. Sound! Euphonium; KyoAni doing what they do best, I suppose.

8. THE iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls; My first exposure to anime idols and it had a fantastic start, muted ending, and the middle arcs were very hit or miss. Lucky for me, there were more hits. Animation could have been better.

9. Wish Upon the Pleiades; A surprisingly fun show, given the questionable idea of car manufacturing company Subaru sponsoring an anime. Vaguely normal magical girls doing magical girl stuff, but the addition of random astrophysics was kind of neat.

10. Death Parade; One thing I felt had a lot of potential, but was weighed down by trying to explain the mysterious nature of the world, as well as the overarching subplot that was less interesting than what could have been episodic.

Honorable mentions in no particular order:
x. Gundam: Reconguista in G; One of the few people that liked it. It had pacing issues for sure, but it was fun, looked amazing, and didn't feel the need to hold my hand throughout the show.
x. Durarara!!x2 Shou/Ten; Long-awaited sequel to Durarara, continues to do more of the same with a wide and varied cast, with tons of connections both coincidental or intended. Can't rank as I don't feel right with unfinished shows.
x. Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works; As a fan of the VN I looked forward to it, but watching it in anime form really brought forth a lot of the issues that I had ignored when I first read it. Still looked really nice and hit the moments I wanted it to hit.
x. Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma; An entertaining adaptation of an entertaining manga. The music was particularly good, but I can't say much else. Same situation as OPM, the interest fades since I already knew what was happening.
x. Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans; It presents a lot of interesting ideas, and I am curious where it's going, but until it finishes, I can't rank it.

1. Shirobako - Inspired, inspiring; it's the show that made me want to go out and create something, which is the ultimate high that any work of entertainment can offer to me.

2. Sound Euphonium - I remember my time in band and it wasn't exactly like this, but there was enough truth here that I found something to which I could relate. That's rare in an anime-- it's not actually why I usually come to anime, but I like a little of it every so often, particularly when it's this beautifully-realized.

3. Your Lie in April - It's on my list in spite of its own melodramatic storyline because it's so incredibly gorgeous and well-animated.

4. Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun - I laughed my ass off at this and that's not something I can usually say about an anime series.

1. Your Lie in April;
2. Shokugeki no Soma;
3. Haikyuu! Season 2;
4. One Punch Man;
5. Hibike! Euphonium;
6. Rokka no Yuusha;
7. Plastic Memories;
8. Ansatsu Kyoushitsu;
9. Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works;
10. Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon?;

1. Shirobako; The show showing the process behind anime in a very interesting way alone puts this on my top ten. All the lovable characters and the drama solidifies its no 1 spot for me.
2. One Punch Man; I think the animation was what puts this high on my list. It was also strong in its comedy and fun
3. Gatchman Crowds insight; It was more Gatchaman Crowds and I loved Gatchaman Crowds. It chose to show the dangers of another aspect of politics. The ending was pretty good and Berg-Katze was very good.
4. Non Non Biyori Repeat
5. Noragami Aragato
6. Hibike! Euphonium; KyoAni doing some fine work. Beautiful backgrounds and feeling that somewhat reminds of my Orchestra days
7. Ore Monogatari
8. Shokugeki no Soma; Good food anime that feels very shounen but exciting for that.
9. Owarimonogatari
10. Hackadoll; TRIGGER at their finest. Enjoyable parodies and all around solid comedy with excellent faces.

x. Symphogear GX; I watched all 3 seasons of Symphogear this year so I feel I had to mention this show. Certainly had the best opening scene of any anime this year. It just had a poor showing in the rest of it. Music was very good still, but the plot just didn't grab me and the ridiculousness wasn't as fun. Still a good show but not quite the best

I started watching the 3rd season with out seeing anything else of the series. The start of the show made it feel like it was recapping the end of the 2nd season. Is that the case or is that really just metroid 'We're stripping all your support away' type scene?

Symphogear is kind of like a hot blooded magical girl show. They introduce a new cast of villains each season and it wasn't recapping the 2nd season. GX starts off on the highest note possible so seeing that as your first experience to Symphogear will be...interesting, lol

1) Hacka Doll The Animation;
The exaggerated antics of the Hacka Dolls pushes parody to a place that's creative and fun, with reference material only adding a layer to the comedy rather than attempting to support the structure entirely. Expressive character detail that flashes by is reminscent of lavishly animated comedy OVAs like Robot Girls Z...only hackier, but the character imbued remains.

2) Fushigi na Somera-chan;
There's a magical girl in here somewhere. Imazaki returns with another show that has a little more definition to the characters, adding to the comedy when the end result of these short stories leaves everything so deformed.

3) Wake Up, Girl Zoo!;
A strong VA cast carries idols to their most primal form. This short show is easy to chew through and finds a sweet spot on pacing with its joke delivery. The context of the idols taking on these animal forms hangs around just enough to feel like it matters without hampering the show from flexing its creative muscles on where it wants to go with episodes.

4) Akagami no Shirayuki-hime/ Snow White with the Red Hair;
There's a more mild take on romance here that winds up focusing on building up the characters and world structure, and the result is something I found to be remarkably palatable for how saccharine the show can get. The cast has the deck stacked in favor of them coming across to be as likable as possible. They get easy decisions and are able to work against the distinctly sinister elements of the world, but sometimes something like that is okay when the focus is on the main cast growing together.

5) Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider;
Late episode impressions that sum up most of my thoughts. This mystery show is more interested in deep diving into the brains of strange geniuses than it is solving its own mystery, and its a better work for that.

6) Himouto! Umaru-chan;
Doga Kobo's animation strengths put to good use. These elements are great leverage for the material to feel a little more elaborate in its reverence for inane but simplistic pleasures. Ultimately I feel like the show does find a warmth in how connected the cast feels to become something heartwarming.

7) Wakako-zake;
For as exotic the presentation of plates can be in food-centric shows like Shokugeki no Soma, nothing really had my mouth watering quite like Wakako-zake. There's a pursuit to indulging and understanding very natural foods here that comes across as wholesome and realistic, in spite of the cartoonish nature of the visuals. The end result here is something that feels distinctly mature and oddly thoughtful about how and why we eat.

8) Hibike! Euphonium/Sound! Euphonium;
KyoAni's attention to detail with things like time of day, clothing, and the smaller aspects of life seem to come out the best in realstic dramas, and Euphonium provides that platform. Some of the cast still feels like it isn't really established, but I am strongly looking forward to seeing where this series goes.

9) One Punch Man;
This show is very easy to expose other people to, and I generally found it easier to rewatch with these new people than I would have expected. The animated version of this builds up the fights and is really able to revel in just how over the top those action sequences can be, and that lends itself to making these characters really feel like a band of eccentric heroes and villains. Ultimately though something about this production feels like its missing, and combined with the sloppy and standard score the show feels like it doesn't have enough personality to really rank higher on this list.

10) Yuri Kuma Arashi;
Ikuhara, why? I wish this was more cohesive. That it spent more time as an idea before it was seen through to full production. None of the ideas or themes really wind up coming together right, but I'm still glad this was made.
