That's awesome. The only optical sticks I've ever played on were Happ perfect 360s (and I hated them!), but I love the standard Hori Namco PS1 sticks. How does the ASCII Answer flash compare to a Happ P360?
I haven't played on American parts in such a long time, so I can't make a very good comparison... but yeah, the ASCII + circular gate does feel like a mix of playing on a JLF and P360. My muscle memory for playing on Japanese sticks serves me fine for executing motions with minimal movement, but I can also ride the gate all I want for spins and circular motions like on an American joystick.

I also popped in a square gate on the thing for a bit, and then it plays like a non-clicky, very smooth JLF - engage distance is identical, as far as I can tell. There's no noise whatsoever except if you tap the gate.

That looks awesome! But I don't get the appeal of this stick and the Dreamcast Ascii. Is it optical like a Happ Perfect 360?
Yeah, I probably should have clarified - as _dementia said: the optical joystick is not stock for a Namco and was pulled out of an ASCII case.

Optical sticks are highly coveted mostly because they're rare - even though using optics has some advantages over microswitches (silent and no wearing down), the parts are so much more expensive so all Japanese-style optical sticks have been discontinued. It seems that most people buy Dreamcast ASCIIs just to gut out the joystick, lol.

The Namco's appeal is wholly separate - it was a cheap (around $30 originally, which is insane compared to today's stick prices), low-profile joystick that is still much better than any of the "budget" retail sticks that have come after it. In terms of part feel/sensitivity, it's somewhere between Sanwa and Seimitsu, and they're possibly as reliable and durable - I know of tons of Namco sticks that people have been playing on since the PS1 days, and their stock parts are still going strong.

I've been looking for a mint Namco with box for a while now, getting to try an optical joystick as well was just icing on the cake. :D

I just remembered that I was using a buddy's Namco PS1 stick for BlazBlue since we were playing on PS3 instead of our usual 360. The owner is a serial sweater and the top of the stick is completely rusted. I had to take disinfect breaks while playing. :lol

haha gross

related: everyone i know who owns a TE stick has major corrosion on the top hex screws (and some even on the base) due presumably to sweating. My hex screws are black as day one, and also one of the reasons I never lend it out during tourneys either.

we pass our sticks around. I just sold my friend my first TE for him to mod and tho the top and screws looked good, the tasty juice residue has collected under the surface, leading to some rust around the shaft and nasty button-bottoms.

Ewww, wow. Most of my friends are pad warriors, but anyone who does play on stick owns their own so I can't say I've ever had the pleasure of encountering any of those issues. Worn out art on the licensed HRAPs or the laminate peeling off on HFSes, yeah, but sweat-wear and rust... *shudder*

Can anyone here suggest a way to lessen the Hori EX2's dead zone? I tried using tape around the actuator, but it didn't adhere.

remove the microswitch pcb out of a jlf and put the restrictor back on and thats pretty much how any sanwa or ascii optical feels.

and about the sweat thing, if the top bolts are nasty you don't want to know what the bottom of the top plate looks like. i've modded alot of sticks for people and some of them got built up crust sweat like you've never seen. nasty.

lots of pics post.

Ugh, learning about stick art for the first time. Sorry if these are basic:

How do you get the button holes out, exacto knife?

SE art is just a sticker I can do at Kinko's?

How do you color the sides/bezel of a TE?

Got my Mushihimesama Futari HRAP in today and I am so far impressed with it. I messed around with Ikaruga on Live tonight for abit and I love the precision of the stick and the stock buttons aren't as bad as I thought they'd be. Artwork is beautiful as well so I'm really happy with the $99 I paid for it.

Of course I've got another $40 in buttons and ball top on the way because I just can't leave well enough alone but that's another story!

im trying to find some art for me SE stick. i made this but im not sure if i want to use it

the original picture didn't fill the whole template so i used the paint effect to fill it in and cover up some clipping issues. i wanted a mega man 9 stick but it's tough to find anything high res enough to use. hmm

btw, never search for chie in google. you get some..disgusting things :[

Anyone know if a ps3 stick will work with ps2 games? I recently got the SSf4 TE stick and was thinking about playing my SFA anthology game. Popped it in and it didn't work. Anyway around that? Also, will it work with the Marvel v Capcom 2 dl? I was thinking about getting it if it did work. Appreciate the input.

Unfortunately until Sony upgrades the firmware to allow the Mad Catz sticks (and new Hori ones) to work with PS2 games, there is no workaround unless you mod with another pcb.

Also the TE "S" will work with Marvel VS Capcom 2.

What?

I wonder who the hell is the culprit for my stick then... : (

Whats the possibility that they will update it, if you don't mind me asking. I assume you know the past history of these sticks and ps3's/360s.

And yea, I got the "s" so I'll dl it soon I guess. Thank you. (The "s" is the red one in the top left part of the board right next to "tournament edition" right?).

Could someone explain to me why stick makers can't make PS3 sticks that are BC with PS2 games? The HRAP3s are PS2 BC, so why couldn't they make their latest sticks PS2 BC, also? Did the older HRAP3s use some component that is no longer allowed by Sony, or something? It would seem like a competitive advantage to have PS2 BC in a company's sticks, so I don't see why a stick maker would leave such a feature out, by choice, especially in Hori's case, since they already had PS2 BC sticks.

If we COULD do it, we would. But it's not up to us.

Even though the Hori RAP V3 SA is SONY Licensed, it still doesn't work with PS2 games. So they can't do it either. ;/

So i've preordered a HRAP VX SA (From AmiAmi - half price international shipping for April!).. but damn, that V3 SA looks awesome - 360 always gets the crappy colour schemes; i've got to switch sides next gen! I'm thinking of a simple and cheap mod to give it traditional Virtua Fighter colour 3 buttons in their correct spots though.

This will be my 4th joystick.. i don't think of myself as a collector but it certainly looks like i am :lol

Both my HRAP's top screws have developed corrosion over the years, the HRAP EX almost instantly it seemed :( At least the VX SA won't suffer the same fate!

Do they even make universal arcade sticks anymore? Feel like I wasted $200+ for a Hori stick that only works on one console.

don't think so. Best bet is to do dual mod so that it works for many consoles. You could either do the dual mod yourself or find someone to do it for you. I think lots of members on here had akuma001 do it for them.

The Paewang Revolution works on both PS3 and 360. It isn't officially licensed by Microsoft so they could presumably lock it out in a future firmware update though. It's also not that great of a stick, most people buy it for the PCB alone, which is pretty easy to wire into a custom or retail stick case.

Yellow!

DSC02025.JPG

I wish I'd bought PS-14GNs! These PS-14-Gs are still a little weird, and the yellows I ordered don't match the Y button.

Yeah it's neat how Hori can get Sanwa and Seimitsu to make custom colors for their sticks, but it sucks if you are trying to match them with a color scheme. The HRAP V3-SA has this weird gray OBSF-24 that you can't get anywhere else either.

Either way, that looks cool. And hey, meshball!

I like PS-14-Gs more than PS-14 GNs. for some reason I prefer the flat buttons to convex ones.

On my HRAP EX-SE I have been toying with the idea of replacing the stock parts with Yellow PS-14-Ds for Start and Back, and pink PS-14-Gs and LB-35 for a psuedo Astro City look.

Thats nice. I might change the buttons on my EXSE later in the year. But not really sure if I want to... Kinda like the green, red, blue and yellow buttons on it :lol

So I purchased a fightstick SE a couple weeks ago and already have a button that sticks. Should I replace the parts now or since this is my first stick wait and play for a bit with the stock parts?

I say replace 'em as soon as possible. There's really no benefit to using the SE's stock parts since Sanwa/Seimitsu stick + buttons are just plain better quality/sensitivity-wise and will last you much, much longer anyways.

If you like using stick, I don't see why you wouldn't replace them now. Sanwas feel a LOT better than the stock ones.

Hey, is the Mad Catz SE Stick compatible with the original Xbox? (or with HD Remix and MvC2 XBLA?)

Not compatible with the original Xbox console, but it will work for Xbox games played on a 360 via BC.

Yes, it will work for HDR and MVC2 (or any XBLA title).

So my man, what's the tattoo on her body say? We all know you must know better than anyone else. :lol

And please keep us updated if Namco will ever release a T6 patch or if we should just give up hope :(

My Hori Pro 3 SA works on PS2 games. I was just playing SFA Anthology on my PS3 last night with it.

Great, that's awesome.

Does it need a lot of configuration for BC Xbox 1 on 360? I'm thinking of maybe playing Capcom VS SNK 2 mainly.

anyone know how long it takes gamingnet to restock? i guess when buy.com cleared out the SE's everyone went and bought up all the good parts :[

Well, here's another one joining the Stick club.

Got a PS3 Mad Catz SFIV SE stick coming in the mail early next week now. And here I thought I didn't care about Super Street Fighter IV at all. Then I see an SE stick on sale and order one on impulse. I figure if I'm going to find out whether I like playing with an Arcade Stick or not, an SE on sale is probably the best way to begin. If I like it, I can upgrade it later, if I don't, it's not a big loss.

Besides fighting games, what can I use it for? Will it work as a regular controller as well? Yeah, I know, it's missing a few axes to sub in for a DS3, but some games might not need more. Again, if not, it's no big deal, I'm getting it for Super, anyway. I might as well stop denying it, I do want SSF4.

Welcome to the wonderful world of joysticks! :D

Yeah, the SE will work as a regular PS3 controller just fine - and you can actually set the joystick to work as LS/DP/RS (left stick, dpad, or right stick), though remember to always set it back to DP when playing fighters since the LS/RS modes aren't as accurate. While fighting games are the best genre for showcasing its advantages, they're great for anything without analog inputs - beat 'em ups, scrolling shooters, etc. There are a ton of genres that lend themselves to that arcade feel... Hell, I beat Mega Man 9 playing on a joystick. ^^;

It's decent for any arcade-style genre, really. The Sanwa stick isn't really the best for shmups, but I'm finding it serviceable enough while I wait for my HRAP. Most arcade-spawned genres just feel so much better on a joystick to me now that I've grown accustomed to it.

Where is a good place to find art for the TE stick? Is there anywhere where I can submit art and they print it out on the plexiglass for me?

I want a cool Gouken + Dudley one on a white background

Also I'm going to upgrade my TE stick to a 8 gate, this place is selling a Sanwa 8 gate with buttons for 50 bucks with 8 buttons.

https://www.theplaydiumstore.com/p-1268-sanwa-package-deal-joystick-8-buttons.aspx

Will this fit on my TE stick?

Thx!

edit: I found a sick thread at srk.com

Arthong can provide laser-cut artwork prints (you send him the Photoshop file of the art) and plexiglass covers for your TE.

The joystick in a TE is already an 8-way Sanwa JLF-TP-8Y, so there is no need to buy a new joystick. If you mean you want to change the restrictor from square to octagon, you just need to buy this octagonal gate:
