Welcome to the wonderful world of joysticks! :D

Yeah, the SE will work as a regular PS3 controller just fine - and you can actually set the joystick to work as LS/DP/RS (left stick, dpad, or right stick), though remember to always set it back to DP when playing fighters since the LS/RS modes aren't as accurate. While fighting games are the best genre for showcasing its advantages, they're great for anything without analog inputs - beat 'em ups, scrolling shooters, etc. There are a ton of genres that lend themselves to that arcade feel... Hell, I beat Mega Man 9 playing on a joystick. ^^;

Thanks for the welcome. It's more a return, actually. I used to have one of those single button ball-headed joysticks for my Commodore 64 way back when I was new to gaming. I expect to adapt pretty fast to joysticks again. Gonna take a swing at getting this one to work on my PC. Shoryuken's advice is pretty much "Try it and see what happens. Maybe yes, maybe no." Mega Man on arcade stick sounds pretty fun, actually. Well, I'll figure it out. How hard can it be?

Ah, welcome back then. :) Joysticks in their current form are the best all-digital control scheme available, but having that nostalgia-fueled feeling is icing on the cake for people who grew up playing on older systems or in arcades. :lol It's certainly true that learning stick isn't hard at all, just gotta put in the time to get used to it and build up muscle memory like with any control scheme.

The gate will allow for easier move in the 8 directions right?
Not necessarily. Octagonal gates tend to make circular motions easier, but they're worse for anything that requires precisely hitting or staying on diagonals (SRKs, charge characters).

Scroll down to 8 way to read exactly why:

http://slagcoin.com/joystick/restrictors.html

It's all down to personal preference and practice, really. If you're having trouble doing certain motions on a square gate, perhaps you could ask for some advice or practice alternative holds before modifying your joystick.

Still it doesn't hurt to try out an octagonal restrictor and see if you like it - some people do end up playing better on one. If not, you can just pop the square gate back on.

"easier" is a very relative term. it's all about preference. I find the square gate easier to move in 8 directions myself. Luckily it doesn't cost much and installs easily, for you to find which one you prefer.

edit: beaten

Well I'm a Gouken player and you have no idea how much trouble I have doing fireballs and reverse fireballs. I end up doing his counter move, especially the low counter when I'm trying his tats hurricane kick. Really annoying.
It's too easy to pull a srk motion with the TE stick, for ultras and supers it's fine, but in a match I end up screwing up repeatedly.

Rufus I can pull off a snake attack like there's no tomorrow lol whereas his tornado punch is more laborious for me.

Yeah, QCF motions are the hardest thing to learn on a square gate... but it's definitely doable with a little practice. The key is that Japanese parts are really sensitive, so you need to try making your motions less exaggerated.

Getting SRKs instead means you're probably riding the gate (eg pushing the stick all the way out and hitting the square restrictor). Try making your motions a little smaller, more precise.

Instead of trying to use the gate to gauge your inputs, try using the "click" of the microswitches. Hit down, and then just roll the stick to forward without touching the gate's corner but hearing the clicks of all 3 directions.

Damnit! I misread the wording on LizardLick and didn't get an adapter for my bat top for my JLF. Any way to get one quick w/o paying the full shipping? In my defense, my wife read it the same way.

Standard 30mm size bat top fits on the JLW-UM-8. Can be used with Sanwa JLF series and JLW-TM-8, and all Seimtisu joysticks using adapter sold below...

And how stupid should I feel for wrecking my MadCatz buttons in the quick disconnect process?

I finally got around to ordering some Sanwa buttons for my SE stick since 2 of my buttons are already going to crap after a month. Got 6 vermilion and 2 reds. Dunno why I really chose them, but I think the finished product will look pretty cool.

Well deserved. Masterful Bob + Lars play.

Hey Markman! I'm sorry to bother you! Me and a friend are going to buy TE fighsticks. He insists that the Super SF4 version is better and have new parts under the hood. I heard otherwise, and I just wanted to confirm! I know you must have answered this question a thousand times, and I' sorry to ask you again.

This is our first stick, and living on Brazil I'm prepared to pay up to 3 to 4 times the american price...so I want to make a councious decision when I buy mine! The older version is considerable less expensive than the new one over here, so I'm considering buying this one as my budget is limited!

I know you work for Madcatz and you're the one responsible for the stick division, so I wanted to ask you this...

Thanks for the attention!

Just finished my mock-up of my second stick. This is a Fightstick SE mod. I picked up the SE on sale, so with all the parts, total cost was about $80. Parts are in the mail, so I should have it all put together by the end of the week. Sanwa stick, Seimitsu buttons. Did the art myself. Let me know what you think!

Is it possible to put a Sanwa JLW into the SF4 TE?

I know this question has probably been answered, but after a half hour of google searching, I just can't find anywhere that gives a yes/no.

Thanks in advance!

I don't see why not. You'd have to do some soldering, though.

Phew! Got my dual modded Madcatz SE up and running. Wanted to wait for everything to be running smoothly for a week or two before doing anything further (upgraded joystick, buttons, art). So far so good!

I'm currently rocking the madcatz SE fightstick, (360) I bought it a week ago. Is the octagonal gate a worthwhile upgrade?
Most folks here will tell you it's just a matter of preference. If you're new to sticks, there's really not much point swapping out the gate since either way there's a bit of a learning curve. I'd use it for a few months before deciding.

My friends been trying to do a dual mod for a while now. Failed at the Cthulu, and now he tried using a 360 Round 2 TE's board (using switches to switch between the ps3 and xbox boards). Works flawlessly on PS3, but the stick is janked up on 360. Downback is up, and left/right/up don't register at all. Uh, advice? :lol

I wouldn't call it an "upgrade," just a different configuration for your stick. As conman said, it's just a matter of preference - square and octagonal restrictors both have their advantages and disadvantages, and you'll have to practice on either one.

I think the best idea is to give square gate a real shot, since it's stock... if you go to an arcade or have to borrow someone else's stick, you'll likely be screwed if you can only play on octagonal.

Sounds like the wiring from the joystick to the 360 PCB got mixed up... getting a diagonal to register as up = ground is wired to one of the directional microswitches. Should be easy enough to fix with a little bit of wire swapping. Exactly how is he organizing the wiring? With a terminal strip?

For those people who have Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom sticks:

The MayFlash Classic Controller to USB adapter works great with hooking up the stick to a PC.

It also works on the PS3! So those who have a TvC stick and not a PS3 stick and want to play some Super Street Fighter IV soon with it, well luckily you have a solution to save some money.

Just press Home+L after connecting it to the PS3 to map the L and R buttons on the stick from triggers to digital buttons, otherwise the L and R buttons won't work.

So yes, this is probably the easiest option if you want a stick that works on Wii/PS3/PC without having to mod.

That mayflash adapter was already mention here, but is a good reminder to some who didn't see it in this thread. I remember the person who tested the adapter out said the buttons label with "Z" on it wont work on the PS3(The back triggers basically)wont work(Something like that)But still, no deal breaker. All you need is 6 buttons for SF and three for VF:)

^ Has this been tested for lag/dropped inputs?

Interested. I haven't done a converter test/review in a long time.

Sorry I just saw this now.

Yes the TE "S" has some improvements over the older TE sticks. Mainly with the newer PCB and the ability to now lock the start & select/back buttons.

Either way, you can't go wrong. That's the main differences other than the aesthetic ones (full plexi top art panel and slimmer side panels).

I think homeboy said it had no lag(From what he notice)BTW, you going to the WCG event in New York City, Fam(Fight Club II)?

Yeah, but from what I can remember no one flat out confirmed if it worked on the PS3 or not, so just spreading the word. :P
The zR/zL buttons work fine with me, it was the L and R buttons that didn't work right away, which is fixed by switching the mode from triggers to digital with Home+L or Home+R, so no problems there. :D

I lack the ability to efficiently test for this, but as far as I can tell, no noticeable lag and I haven't noticed any drop inputs from playing BlazBlue: CT and SF4 with it for several hours.
Would be interested in seeing a proper test/review by someone who's more knowledgeable with this sort of thing. :lol
Someone who also has one should test a Classic Controller/CCPro on the PS3, since it'd be a nice alternative to the Dual Shock 3 for games that don't need Six-Axis to work. I might get one with Monster Hunter Tri though, and if it works I'll let you guys know. I also haven't tried hooking up a second stick to the adapter to see if they'd both work on the same adapter just fine on the PS3 as I don't have another TvC stick. :(

Neat, I have a buddy who will be thrilled.

I'd like to see one of SDTekken's lag tests run on the thing, but mayve it hasn't been done due to conflict of interest.

Thanks for the info man! I guess I'm getting the older model!

Your sticks are great!!! I can't wait until I finally have one!

Super thanks! You've levied my fears of buying this adapter for Classic Controller Pro use.

All the buttons on it are digital just like the Tatsu stick.

Much love from me for the Jet Set Radio theme. That is seriously cool and original. The only thing I might critique is the ball top on your stick. You have great contrast going on everywhere but there although I can definitely understand your desire to go with the black.

I wonder what a black meshball would look like on there? Probably pretty cool! :D

Edit: My simple mod on the Mushi HRAP. I really like the amount of contrast it added without altering the overall look of the stick. I'm fairly pleased with the final product.

how did you print the art? i don't have any kinko's around me to make a nice lamented sticker :[

I actually didn't go with the laminated sticker for this one. My last one started peeling on me after about a week. I got a high quality print at FedEx Office and had it laminated, then used some spray adhesive to attach it. There was a small display with some printing options, and I took one of the samples I liked up to the counter.

Yeah, I went with the black to fill out the center of the wheel logo behind Beat. I agree, with the shaft cover on it sorta loses some pop. The mesh top would probably be awesome on there, and I considered it, but it's about $10 more... ;p

JSR stick is sexy. <3 Aside from the art, I really like the button color choice - there's just something about black rims + the 3 colors that works so well.

Matman, my first stick uses those same buttons and ball top. And it's a HRAP3. Nice! Good idea replacing those Hori buttons. Not only are they slow and mushy, they have sharp edges.

I fucking love you. I wanna see how that will look IRL.

nvm. Great job.

you just have to learn not to ride the edge of the gate, you don't have to have the joystick jammed to the edge for the whole motion.

Am I to gather from this thread that it is easy to insert your own artwork into the MadCatz SFIV Tournament Edition stick? I have a HRAP 3, and it would not be a very easy thing to do.

If I had to do it, I figure I would cut out a plastic overlay and just sandwich the artwork on top of the original face plate. It probably wouldn't add much height, but I would have no idea about the best tool/materials. Is there any tutorial for this on a HRAP 2 or 3?

its not hard if you're willing to pay, Art will cut your art with a laser and provide plexi. he can leave you the button cutouts too so you can insert them in buttons like on the ken stick below.
