NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread

Oh Arcade Stick Gods, hear my call. I recently purchased one of the Hori Tekken 6 wireless sticks (for 360) cheaply and one of the buttons is a bit gummy, for lack of a better description. It feels sticky and although it appears to register correctly it doesn't have the same feel or response as the other buttons.

After speaking to the supplier, the cost to get it replaced unecnomical and even then, they may not replace it as it "functions" correctly. I understand it's a cheap stick (and I bought it very cheaply) but I am happy enough with how the rest of the buttons. After looking through some other forums this stick appears to be hard to modify but I was hoping to get the opinion of some people here - is there any way to easily swap one of the "unused" (7/8th position) buttons with the gummy one (the X button) or am I going to have to learn to de-solder and solder?

So which is better for a metal faceplate, snap-in buttons or screw-in w/ nut?

From my experience with the Madcatz SE stick, snap-in's are the way to go. As mentioned, the thin metal panel of the SE proves a real bitch in getting the screw-in's to stay tightly screwed in. Trust me. I kept having a couple of buttons loosen on me after repeated use to the point where I had to open up my stick, screw the nut in again and out of desperation, I sealed it with some elmers glue on the side of the nut just to keep them snug but not so much that I couldn't replace them in the future. The glue did the trick and I haven't had any issues since but snap-in's are is exactly what they say they are: a snap.

I got all my Seimitsu parts in today and modded my OG PS3 TE Fightstick!

What's the safest way to get the disconnect wires off the buttons to swap new ones in? EDIT: Well, figured it out, but gah, is there an easier way to do it? It's on awfully tight.

And I tried using 2 Wii TvC Sticks on the PS3, and they both work at the same time using one adapter. CCPros work too, but it won't map right unless you have a button config in-game. :lol

Put my vote in.

Still need the 360 flavor. $250 seems a fair price point for the US. Can't imagine them getting away with charging more than that.

Use a small eyeglass or jewelers flat-head screwdriver, put it between the connector and plastic, and twist gently. That!s what I did, worked great!

Hmm... I don't suppose there might be a way for me to get a replacement PCB for an original SFIV 360 FSTE, MarkMan? Had an unfortunate accidental drop of the soldering iron when I was dual-modding it with a MC Cthulhu/Imp, so now all I've got is the TE body with a MC Cthulhu. I suppose I could use a PCB from one of the MadCatz 360 controllers, but I would lose the functionality of switching between D-Pad and L/R Stick modes, and it wouldn't fit as neatly in the case either.

Finally got my Seimitsus in. I love their weight. It's such a huge improvement over the Sanwas.

TE stick + black plexi + Seimitsu buttons + octagonal gate = KoF2k2 can't come to XBLA soon enough.

beautious

Nice tip. I wonder if you can just open up the TvC stick and rewire the buttons.

It'd be pretty easy to do. Either way, it's not really necessary for the stick, since I don't know of a recent fighting game that doesn't have a button config of some kind.

If you have an stick but don't play on a table, I gotta say you're missing out on part of the experience.

"But Chorazin", you cry "I don't have space, I'm flat broke, or my coffee table is too far away from the couch to enjoy table play!"

Well then, let me introduce you to my (and soon to be your) best friend, the Dave table from Ikea:

It costs a whopping $17, comes in a variety of colors, and works as an arcade stick table PERFECTLY, not to mention a latop table or as an end table or whatever.

Go get one today!

That DAVE table is a good idea! I wonder if it can take the pounding though. :lol

Make a LACK stick for $7.99!

Oh yeah, no problem. I've used mine for a year and outside of needing to re-tighten some screws it's been smooth sailing.

Hell, you could go through a few a year at that price, anyways!

How sturdy is this thing? If it doesn't wobble then I might look into this.

Doesn't wobble for me, since you have you hands on each side of the stick and generally you're going to put the stick directly on top of the support column, it's all balanced. I also have mine resting on my knees with the feet slid under my chair.

After my friend played using mine he got his own and has it up a lot higher, and he hasn't ever voiced any complaints either.

If you aren't scared of soldering I used a $9.99 3rd party classic controller to dual mod my stick. Instructions are here:

I'm thinking of picking up a custom from these guys :
http://foe-hammer.com

Do they get your seal of approval?

I just got a stick from them, communications were pretty quick and painless, I should have it soon I'll let you know if you want how it all works out, but so far so good.

I heard the PCB was updated in the Super TE stick. Can anyone tell me exactly what was improved? Do they still use that proprietary intel USB controller that prevented the sticks from working with certain PCs (specifically, the ps3 stick)?

Stick advice, please.

I'm going to make a PS3 custom stick. I haven't made one since my old one. I soldered onto a PS1 PCB and used it w/ happ parts.

Please tell me if I'm understanding this right. I can get a Cthulu board, wire, .110 disconnects, Sanwa stick and buttons and make a stick without any soldering? (Soldering is the bane of my existence)

Also, Is there a specific sanwa joystick that I'm supposed to order to work w/ the Cthulu board?

Essentially, yes. The Cthulhu already has a USB jack, uses screw terminals for buttons/stick, so you'd only be crimping your QDs onto the wires to attach the buttons and... that'd be it.

Nice!

I still have flashbacks of a solder ball hitting me in the cheek that first time. I stopped right then and went to buy protective shades. :lol

hikarutilmitt said:
How the heck did you manage that? :lol

The wire that i used was way way too thick and not stranded. So while i was holding it in place waiting for the solder joint to cool, it kinda flicked the still-warm solder right at my face. I was doing a whole lot wrong. This one should go a bit better! :lol

So Videogamesplus is selling the Tekken 6 deluxe package for $59, and I'm in the market for an entry-level stick.

Is it worth it? I'm a pretty low level SFIV player, but I don't want to throw money away. Are there better sticks that are similarly priced? I'm not looking to blow more than $100.

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated!

Nah, the T6 stick is pretty useless. The best stick you're going to get in that price range is probably the Madcatz standard edition. Plus you can easily swap out the stick and buttons for something better when you feel ready.

Nevermind, got my answer on SRK. I think I'll just get a cthulhu and swap it in.

Can I confirm something?

If I'm to buy new parts for my SE (360) stick, that is, a Sanwa stick and buttons, are the other MadCatz guts still prone to failing?

Nope, the PCB is pretty solid.

Why are you posting on Shoryuken?

And don't say "cuz i'm a mod lol", that totally looks like a situation that calls for "lock and move on"

BTW, what do you think of the Hais converter? Is InPin a big enough upgrade to think about? I mean, it's no big deal now because I have three or four PS3 sticks these days, but I'm just curious.

Hais is fine. It's up there with the Pelican and InPin IMO.
