What are everyone's opinion on the Hori Real Arcade Pro V3 SA?
Good all round stick?
A year ago, I would have said the HRAP V3/VX was Hori's best joystick...
I've changed my mind since then.
It's still a nice joystick, BUT...
a) it's the least mod-friendly Pro-level joystick they've released;
b) hard to change the artwork out without ruining it completely; you never had to change out/
wreck artwork on the old HRAP 1/2/3-style bases if you were careful or didn't remove
the original welded mounting spots on the licensed HRAP's;
c) the interior of the HRAP V3/VX is incredibly cramped! I had the most difficult time removing the original Sanwa buttons because there was very little room to press on the
release tabs! There were buttons I had to jimmy off by using a small screwdriver to
activate the tabs...
d) It's real obvious that Hori lightly copied the Mad Catz TE from several respects. You'd
expect better from an industry accessory leader than copying.
Those are the reasons why I've come to appreciate the Soul Calibur V design better.
a) it's NOT a copy of a Mad Catz design; it's closer to the Sega VSHG with a similar,
comfortable 30mm button layout... Personally, I think Astrocade button layout is
much more natural and intuitive feeling than the other button layouts (especially HRAP
1);
b) More interior space for button swapping and PCB mods/swap-outs;
c) the original art is far easier to protect OR remove for alternate/new art;
d) Feels higher-grade construction-wise than the HRAP V3/VX design.
The only thing I dislike terribly about the SC V is that it's harder to drop in replacement control levers than the older HRAP case designs. I know people say they can squeeze in LS-32/-40's from the top like the old styles but I had problems and had to remove and install the LS-32 PCB from the baseplate after I removed that piece. Other people have taken the more drastic measure of cutting base plastic with Dremels OR positioning/repositioning the LS-joystick lever until it fits through even if it scrapes the base plastic. What a ridiculous oversight/lack of design forethought by Hori! => IMHO...
NOTE: I am NOT saying anybody's joystick designs are bad or "sucky." There are just specific reasons I prefer some designs over others. I have issues with everybody's joysticks. Some minor or big inconvenience always pops up with a design; nothing will every completely satisfy everybody. That's why companies are trotting out newer designs all the time.
There's already a lot of complaints about Hori's new Fighting Edge design.
The major one is shaping up to be the lack of readily available replacement Hori buttons when the originals wear out. Many people want to keep the original button feel otherwise there's going to be massive swapouts of the buttons with Sanwa and Seimitsu components. Again, there's no source for button/component replacements when the originals eventually wear out. Hori doesn't have tons of loose backstock buttons and NOBODY's carrying new-style Hori replacement buttons, period.
For the new Hori joystick lever, complaints aren't as prominent... It'll last longer than the buttons and most of us decide to begin with whether we're keeping a JLF-type lever or replacing it with another lever design.
