NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread

So, last night my friend and I traded Christmas gifts since we will both be out of town on Christmas, and he got me the Hori Fighting Stick Wii.

I like it, it looks nice with the white and blue stick and buttons. It is nice. I like it a lot, and played it with Street Fighter 2: Turbo last night and it was fun. It will take a bit of getting used to.

I have never actually used a stick except for once or twice in the arcade. But overall I enjoy it.

Usually there's no going back after playing with a decent stick.

Anyway, what are the available stick solutions för 360? It's going to suck playing HD Remix with pad and modding the latest HORI is everything but simple.

About a week ago, I picked up the Hori Ps3 Stick, because I felt myself jonesing for a little fighting action. And for the first week I've had it, it has worked beautifully. However, the only game I was playing was Tekken.

Now, tonight, I was given Capcom Fighting Evolution as a gift, and as it'd been a long time since I'd played a Capcom fighting game, I decided I'd brush up in training. Problem is, when I pressed the L1 button, which is 3P (Which should have been accompanied by the three punch icons), nothing happened. 3K worked fine, but no 3P. I even exited the game and tried in another (Spyro), but that game wouldn't register the L1 button either.

So, what i want to know is whether or not there is anything I can do about this to fix it, or if one none functioning button will ruin my experience. Not having L1 for Street Fighter or Tekken is no big deal. And I can easily work around it for Soul Caliber. Any big names or fun games this would hinder?

Thanks.

There's a picture there if anyone needs to see the placement.

There's probably a problem with the a) soldiering, b) microswitch or c) pcb, ordered in descending likelyness.

See if you can open it up and check if the wired connection to that button is soldiered on properly (I'm assuming soldiering because I doubt the HFS3 uses quickdisconnect plugs). There should be two cables connected to each button. Its not impossible for the soldiering to break away when you essentially have a peripheral that you're bashing on with the force of thor all the time. If it is the soldiering then you'll need to find a way to resecure the cable to the button connection, the best would be re-soldiering it.

If its a microswitch problem, then the best you can do is to swap it out for one of the most useless buttons, which in the end means you're gonna have to re-soldier the cables to it. R2 would be my pick.

If neither of those work out then its most likely a pcb problem and you're best off returning it for a replacement.

As far as usefulness goes, not having L1 would kill any 6 button fighter, which is a lot of them. Unless you're happy with playing 6 button fighters using R1/R2 instead of L1/L2 (which I'd imagine would be really freaking WEIRD AND UNCOMFORTABLE), you're gonna want to get it replaced or fixed unless you don't play any sort of Street Fighter 2, 3 or Guilty Gear, off the top of my head. KOF should be o-k

That's my 2c, anyway.

why :(

he was quick to jump to conclusions at a major qualifier tourny since they all had laggy hdtv and told people not to go. the problem was fixed btw.

did anybody test capcom fighting evolution on the xbox to see if arcade sticks work on it? my hrap doesn't

Hey guys, pretty much a complete noob when it comes to fighting games but I've been recently getting into SF2 and SF3 (been going to the local arcade a bit) and just bought the Xbox Anniversary collection as well. With HD Remix coming soon and then SFIV in a few years what would you recommend to someone who wants to experience fighting games as they really should be. I was considering getting the HORI VF stick, but I heard it's has a square gate which is bad or something? Can someone clarify and possibly explain what would be the best thing to do? Btw, how much do custom sticks usually go for, like Finkles or anyone else's. Thanks.

My finkle stick set me back about 175CAD. I highly suggest going the custom route, best stick experience you can get. The only thing is the turn around time, it can take a while for your stick to be made.

You have pics of your stick? What style would you recommend for it. Does it really make that big of a difference compared to the Hori stick? Thanks.

The quality is above a lot of Hori sticks because materials used. You always get quality Sanwa or Seimitsu parts, while with Hori, you may get some quality parts (like certain ones come with a Seimitsu stick) but you get their own buttons, which really aren't that great. A decent hori stick (namely the HRAP2) will set you back $100 plus shipping. Or you could fork out a little bit more and get a higher quality stick.

Unfortunately I don't have any pics of my stick because it's still in the process of being made (like I said, turn around time can be the downfall) but if you check out his thread on SRK, there are plenty of other people's on there, and they're all absolutely beautiful.

Hmm, I'm thinking of maybe just getting the hori stick, changing it to an octagon gate with a bat top and then eventually ordering a Finkle once his word load lowers and I get some $$$. Does the Hori work with SF Anniversary and or MAME? Thanks.

Thanks, spoon. That covered everything I needed to know, especially considering I got the Hori to use with Third Strike. So yeah, I won't be just sitting on a messed up L1 button. I mean, no Street Fighter? No Guilty Gear? It may have been a long time since I really played a fighting game like I should, but that's not a good deal.

I just got a HRAP3 stick and completely loving it. My only mini complaint is the buttons. They feel...eh. Too soft? Not sure. Any recommendations of some real good button replacements? Games I play are Tekken, GG, Street Fighter, VF, Soul Calibur.......well. Just about all of them. The joystick has a great feel to it. Just the buttons I'm a bit off on.

Edit: Oh. And is it best to leave the option of digital or analog on?

What button layout do you have on your stick? I never use the L buttons on any stick I use (SF AC stick, HRAP 3, hori T5). Usually games default controls to X, O, Square, Triangle, R1 and R2. I think he'll be fine until he finds replacements.

I think Sanwa obsf-30s are a direct fit for HRAPs. I usually keep mine switched to digital.

I'm using a modded HRAP2, so I don't use the L buttons either. Infact, my L buttons arn't even installed anymore :lol

The person I was responding to however, uses this: http://www.hori.jp/us/products/ps3/fighting_stick/index.html
And unless the picture is wrong, the buttons you're going to be wanting are L1, L2, Triangle, O, X, Square unless you wanna be using some fucked up reversed arc shape over the astro city configuration.

don't those have the buttons soldered to the pcb?
Oh shit that's right, what stick did I think it was :lol

Replacement stick, ahoy - or American t5 stick levels of modding D:

Yes, thanks MarkMan for the info. Have my buttons ordered and junk. I can finally retire from the d-pad and start playing arcade style finally. Got a lot of learning ahead of me. Although I can still play a mean Soul Calibur though. Street Fighter and others alike I'm having issues with doing supers for some reason, and I can't do EWGF in Tekken for the life of me. Mehhh. Back to practicing it seems.

If anyone in the UK is after the Hori Fighting Stick EX2 for Xbox 360, it's on sale at Gamestation for £19.99

Hey guys.. its been a while since I came in here but I would just like to throw down a healthy recommendation for a gaffr here who mods sticks, he also posts on various other fighting forums. akuma001 does a fantastic job when modding sticks if any of you need a job go with him. He knows his shit really well.

Not sure if Paik4Life still does mods but here's one I bought fairly recently (a modded Tekken 5 stick). Everything came supplied with the stick, except it originally came with a Korean Fanta stick (which I really like for fighters) but I swapped it out and I currently have the custom tweaked joystick from the previously posted FightingStick SS...

It now has a shorter shaft, under compression from the spring shaft cover; and further compression from washers. It's tuned to give very fast return-to-neutral and double-taps (e.g. f, f); also has a different shaft actuator to give fast accurate diagonals with a square gate. The dust-cover is semi-transparent; a few decorative rings were added and can be seen just below it...

All the buttons are 28mm Crown screw-ins (Korean); sensitive and also great for button tapping...

Awesome 'Viewtiful Stick' for fighters and shooters...

So what would be the better for 3rd strike?i was considering one with 8 face buttons instead of the typical 6.....those akuma moves are tough for me lol

Anyone....:S

So I just picked up the Hori Fighting Stick EX2 last night, and I have a quick question about it, as I'm new to the world of arcade sticks. I noticed that the stick actually spins in place (not just the ball on top, but the whole stick). I tried playing a couple rounds of SFII with it and it just felt awkward to me. Is this par for course with these sticks, or is my stick borked? If it is normal, would swapping out the stick fix that? I've never used a stick for home consoles, but picked this up to play SFII and III and possibly VF5 if I ever get around to picking it up, but I just want to know if the spinning stick is something I should get used to.

it is... i actually never noticed it until you just stated it:lol ... its a lolipop stick and i prefer to hold them between middle and ring finger. Like holding a wine glass.

Any good guide for ripping up a 360 pad and soldering to stick? I need a new one and want to do it right this time.

All I can say is that I saw one around a year ago...so all I can tell you is that yes, they do exist, but I don't have it bookmarked, sorry.

Please don't sue me, Sega. :D

That is also PC compatible as well, right? I wonder if in the future they'll be PS3 compatible. I'd LOVE a stick that works for 360/PS3/PC, and would gladly pay $200 each for such a stick.

Ah, well, I'll just have to force myself to get used to it! I'll try holding it differently, see if that helps any. Thanks for letting me know it's me and not the stick!

I've finally decided to go the ArcadeinaBox route after seeing some really positive results. It also doesn't hurt that I've finally been struck with inspiration. Let me know what you guys think of my design-

http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=2146114016&size=o

The only thing I can think to add to it is a Hammer & Sickle. My original idea was to turn it into the symbol for the 360 motion, but I don't think there's anywhere I could stick it that wouldn't be ugly :(

ok, as somebody who has never owned a arcade stick what should i get here

i would like to spend about $100 but might splurge up to $150, pretty sure id go with a 360 stick since it also works on windows and more then likely will be able to find adapters for other systems easier

would like something custom but not sure if thats out of my price range, like i said im a complete novice here but would like something nice to start out

I was in the same boat. New to the arcade sticks and getting away from the d-pad for sure. I picked me up a Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 stick and really enjoying it. I did replace the buttons out for Sanwa buttons and they are much better than the hori buttons. I've been mainly playing Tekken. You really feel a difference with your executions of moves and what not. The downfall was I could do EWGF's for the life of me. So been practicing up on it. Can get some down from the right side but not the left. Just have to get used to it. I don't expect instant results but over time, I expect to get back to my same Tekken calibur as I was using a d-pad.

For Street Fighter, pulling off supers was tricky at first. But got the hang of it. Same with Guilty Gear and King of Fighters. Of course these are all played on the PS3. The 360 I'm not sure what to pick up on yet. Debating on getting one or not. It'd be mainly for Dead or Alive and possibly Soul Calibur 4. Although I'm on the fence which version to get with that. PS3 or 360. I suppose the question is, where would be the better community? Will it be based off the number of installed users on the 360, or more with the Tekken community on the PS3. Tough choice.

For X360 there's only really the Hori Fighting Stick EX2. You can customise it with a bit of work (check some previous pages in this thread). A completely custom stick will cost more than $100, but it'll last and should be very easy to fix if anything breaks.

The downside with the EX2 is that the stock Hori parts are not as good as other sticks on the market (VSHG, HRAP3, etc), and if it breaks then it takes a little more effort to fix because you have to actually desolder and resolder the circuit board. Also it does work on PC, but will not work on PS3. Note that the VSHG and HRAP3 do not work on X360 =[

So if you are getting a stick for 360, Hori Fighting Stick EX2 is the first place to look. Probably best to have a go at it, see if you like it and then think about getting it customised afterwards.

If you want to go completely custom with say Sanwa controls, then it'd cost more like ~$180+ postage (using arcade in a box as a reference). If you go to the trading forum at shoryuken.com then you'll get an idea of the different prices available.

I got the EX2 for Christmas too, and have always prefered a stick to a pad in fighting games but I've noticed that the actual stick is very loose. Seems like I could blow on it and it'll move.

Is there any way to tighten this thing up? Modding it with better parts appeals to me, but I just know I'll screw it up and it's already next to impossible to find here in the UK (at least, I had a nightmare getting it in the first place).

My second Virtua Stick high grade has been in shipping hell for two weeks now, and I paid 80$ for shipping it! :(

I hope it arrives tomorrow, so I can play with Flo who will be coming over for new years..

The usual sex will do, though, so its ok if it stays away for another week.

Ok, this seems to be the stick-thread.

I'm currently running a budget-saulabi stick, but I'm kinda annoyed at the directional input. I need access to the 8 standard directions (up down left right + diagonal versions) but my stick is too precise with the diagonal input.

Suppose I want to press df (diagonally down forward). Anything that is a single degree outside of a perfect diagonal angle, gets interpretated as either straight down or straight forward. There's barey any margin.

Is this due to hardware or software, and can it be fixed? Are some sticks better then others (haven't owned any prior to this one) or do I have to get a custom one?

Oh dear sweet god how is this stick only 50 bucks, I've been looking for something to play VF5 with on my PS3. I see on that info sheet that it doesn't work with PS2 games, but I see some of you are playing SF3 with this stick? So, can you or can't you plug it into the PS3 and play PS2 games with it?

I also see CcrooK put in Sanwa buttons, this is something I'm definitely interested in...was it hard, or do they just pop in? Once you did this are you completely pleased with the quality of the joystick and buttons?

Finally, since it is USB can I hook it up to my computer and play with it on there?

I am so ready to buy this, thanks for any answers.

First off, you might wanna read this one:
http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=136372

As far as backwards compatibility goes, I heard it sometimes is buggy. Weird.

As far as the Sanwa swap, they snap right in. But the question is quick disconnects or soldered?

For the PC question, yeah, that works straight outta the box, I got a friend of mine a HRAP3 and it's works like a charm on PC straight away. Also was easy to swap the buttons :)

I keep wanting to pick up VF5 again (had the PS3 version...seriously) but keep reminding myself of the mess that is the 360's d-pad.

What is the stick to get for the 360? It would need to work as good on the PC as well.

Hmmm, the button swapping looks like it involves soldering, which is probably beyond me. For backwards compatability...almost every official thing from sellers says it won't work on PS1/PS2 games, but I see people in this thread using the same stick on PS2 games. Maybe it has something to do with what flavor of PS3 you have (software emulated vs. hardware emulated for backwards compat). Also I see it doesn't work out of the box for some PCs, what kind of setup does your friend have? I think I would probably use it more on PC than PS3, especially if it isn't 100% compatible with PS2 games.

I have the Hori GCN Soul Calibur II stick and I was wondering if it was worth picking the Hori Wii Arcade Stick since most of the games that require sticks (except Metal Slug Anthology) are compatible with a GCN D-pad anyways. Anyone have any impressions of the Hori Wii stick?

Ok so I went ahead and got a Hori Fighting Stick 3, fingers crossed that it works on my PC (and to a lesser extent, for PS2 games on my PS3).

Worst case scenario is it works on neither and I have an expensive brick that I can't use until Street Fighter 4 comes out =(

The EX2 stick for 360 is. It works just fine and is great for the price. 60 bucks.

While initially somewhat satisfied with the EX2, I am now pretty disappointed. It seems like the stick requires too precise of movement especially when it comes to diagonals. Maybe I'm just too used to playing my x-arcade stick, which I loved. Fuck, I really wish X-Arcade would release an adapter for 360, fucking Microsoft!!!!!!!!

What's the word on the Saulabi 4K ? Decent enough for someone who's not really hardcore with the modding and such.

It's a fine stick for the price...

I have a Saulabi 4K that I use with Tekken every now and then... it's not the best constructed stick out there, but it is the cheapest and most readily available Korean styled arcade stick on the market.

I did have to resolder some points after a day or two of playing some Tekken though, but it works fine :)

Blah

So I kept putting off buying my own Pelican PS2 -> USB adaptor (PL 6338)...

...aaaaaaand now it's discontinued. I can't seem to find it anywhere. All the Gamestop's I went to ran out and were no longer receiving shipments (obviously), amazon doesn't have any, nor does any other vendor I can find through google.

I saw an adaptor being sold at Radioshack, but it's also discontinued. I only saw one left at the store, but I was afraid to buy it because I won't be able to test it for lag and such until I get back to school (in another state), so I won't be able to return it.

Anyone used the Radioshack one can give impressions? Or maybe someone who knows where I can find a Pelican? My assumption is that Pelican will eventually release a new one that sorts out all the guitar hero issues it was having (read the amazon reviews for an idea, people are MAD :lol ).
