NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread

I'm a novice builder looking to upgrade my PS2 MAS and custom Seimitsu sticks, can I please get some help on these questions? About to place order.

1. Any consensus best/cheapest 360 pad to look for?

2. Do I need any accessories or spare parts besides the stick and buttons?

3. I suspect that my MAS PCB is for PS1, do I need to re-wire for PS2 to use a PS3 adapter?

Blah, bad news on the order from Lizard Lick. The start/select buttons they sent me didn't have the nut to secure it in place, so I'm stuck with ugly yellow buttons for now. Thankfully, I called them ASAP and they've already put in an order to get some shipped. Yay! Pics will be posted when it is complete... muahahah

just put some grey/black sanwa buttons and a grey balltop on my hrap 3. it was in fact a very easy mod, in spite of my talent for screwing up perfectly simple pieces of handiwork. had a slightly scary moment when i bent one of the button contacts while attaching a quick disconnect, but it was none the worse for wear, and it works perfectly -- this would be enough to make me a sanwa parts fanboy even if the buttons weren't freakishly responsive. might take some pics, though i guess it looks exactly like you'd expect it to

Does anyone know what stick comes with the SFIV bundle that is available in some territories? EB was unable to tell me if it was the Hori or one of the MadCatz (obviously the standard if so)

btw i haven't seen it mentioned that sanwa snap-ins actually fit more snugly on a hrap than the hori buttons do -- the stock buttons will wiggle a bit on the surface of the panel if you push them around. really feels more solid with the new buttons. strongly recommend the mod to anyone with a hrap

This is kind of a strange question, but I've been having a really hard time deciding which button color to go with for my white HRAP 3. I've decided on the Sanwa OBSF-30RGs, but I'm torn between the blue and orange buttons. The pictures I've found of the orange ones are kind of inconsistent, so it's difficult to tell what shade of orange they actually are. I really like the orange on the amazon.co.jp edition of the real arcade pro but since they're hori buttons, they might not necessarily be the same color. The picture of the buttons at lizard stick looks too neon-ish for my tastes. Is there a picture anywhere of what these look like in an actual stick or anything?

Orange, Vermillion and Red can all look very similar in different lighting conditions.
Have you seen the images on www.akihabarashop.jp? The OBSF-30RG entry doesn't have a Vermillion or Red picture, but if you just look at regular OBSF-30, all 3 colours are there in the dropdown.

So are the normal sf sticks the easiest stick to customize because no soldering is required? I never customized sticks before and I want to get into it the easiest way possible.

Thanks for the heads-up regarding the pictures. I think I'm just going to go with the blue, though I was thinking of buying another few buttons in some random colors of interest just to see what they actually look like for future stick modding possibilities, especially since I'm curious about some of the seimitsu buttons as well.

Are the normal sticks upgradable without soldering?

THATS MY QUESTION.

I will just buy a normal stick and swap out the parts.
i'm probably going to have to do this

hopefully it isn't that hard :\

edit: i just saw on the gamestop website
Using an arcade-style joystick and 30mm quick connect buttons along with realistic spacing and an eight-button layout, the Street Fighter IV FightStick brings the arcade experience right into your home. With separate turbo settings for each button and great ergonomics, prepare yourself for hours of competition, no quarters necessary.
now i wonder about the stick D:

Careful about dark blue OBSFs. They're not dark blue, they're purple.

I grabbed the regular baby-blue looking blue ones. Thanks for the warning. I couldn't tell whether the the dark blue were actually purple or not; the pictures online of most of the colors are kind of inconsistent.

does anyone know if its possible to mod or add either a 360 gate or optical stick to a stick? i modded my hori stick with a sanwa 8 way gate and it just crapped out so i have to replace the gate but i was at the arcade yesterday and realized that every machine there had smooth 360 degree motion. it was glorious feeling minimal clicks and perfect rotation.

JLW has an optional circular gate or HAPP perfect 360

Does anyone know what the part numbers are for the octagon gate and the bat top for the standard SFIV Fight Stick? Is it Sanwa or Seimistu parts I need to order? ^^;

Sanwa GT-Y Octagonal Restrictor Plate
Sanwa LB-30-N Joystick Bat Top
Sanwa Joystick Adapter

ATTN LS-32 owners

Do you know if the Seimetsu LS-32 is compatible with a bat top and octagonal gate?

I am deciding between the Sanwa JLF Ultimate mod (bat top, extra spring, octagonal gate, microswitch/actuator mod) or an LS-32 (if it's possible to just add the octagonal gate and bat top)....

Guys,

I learnt to play Street Fighter on the Genesis with Super Street Fighter 2, and I had one of the Saturn pads before the Saturn (good d-pad, with six buttons on the face).

Ever since then, I've never been able to get into a six button fighting game like Street Fighter, because I've never been able to feel comfortable with a control pad.

So, two questions:

1. What is the difficulty curve with using a stick - I've never felt comfortable, but thats probably because I've never put the time in to learn.

2. If I go with the six button pad, will I be at a disadvantage to those with sticks?

1) practice will make perfect

2) of course not (unless you practice on a pad and go to an arcade and play)... whatever is most comfortable for you will give you the biggest advantage

Actually, the LS-32 comes with a pseudo octogonal gate...
Basically you have the teal square gate and and a dark blue "rounds the vorners" thing.
Works pretty well though I heard the dark blue part wears down rather quick.

That said, if you have a JLF, just mod it. You can even put in a different spring to make it harder.

Yea, I was going to go for the so-called "Ultimate Mod" to:
1) shorten dead zeon
2) tighten spring
3) add bat top and octagon gate

But you might have sold me on the LS-32 (despite the "wear down")...

i'm thinking i should buy a good 360 stick while they're around -- we know the TEs are limited, and we don't know how many HRAP EXs they're going to make. not really liking the style of the basic madcatz stick, and once you've put in arcade parts it's almost as expensive as the TE anyway. i'm really hooked on hd remix right now -- to the point that i don't think i'll be switching to sf4 for long. the ps3 version is getting on my nerves, and i suspect the 360 community will last longer. if the HRAP EX was priced closer to the HRAP 3 i'd already have one :/

Man, this thread is pretty overwhelming when trying to decide on a stick :lol

Not sure if I wanna go with a Hori, the regular SF4 stick, or the TE :-X

For the Madcatz sticks, it sounds like the TE stick is great if you like the weight of it (or the design) and have the money to spend. If not, it sounds like the regular stick is very good, and if you aren't satisfied with the buttons or the stick, you can replace them without any soldering and still come out cheaper than the TE.

The arrangement of the action buttons sold me on the SF4 stick. I'm still hoping to get my hands on a TE too. =D

anyone else going to be switching out their buttons on the TE when they get it? I was going to order some now, but can't decide what color to get, guess it would be easier if I had a background pic in mind. Just want to make sure I have everything I need before they ship. Probably end up taking the buttons from the TE and swap those with the default ones on my HRAP. Hmm... decisions, decisions.

I'd like to toss on some Vewlix panel art and button plugs for the rightmost buttons to emulate the arcade panel. White/Red/Black works great.

Simple and clean.

Interesting. Thanks.

Never really saw a Viewlix cabinet before, but yeah, the TE stick looks like it's been literally rip out of that cabinet...very nice detail! I think I'll put a Viewlix panel art on my TE stick too whenever a proper template is out there.

I was playing HD Remix on PSN tonight with my modded HRAP3. Must say...it's definitely an improvement from before. I like the octo gate and bat top. Makes it way easier to play with fireball characters. I'm thinking about swapping the top and gate on my EX2 (POS).

And congrats Markman. They bigged you up on the 1up stream today too. I'm glad the TE stick may sell out, has gotten awards and will go a long ways to changing the reputation of Madcatz. It wouldn't be without your hard work and dedication or love for joysticks you never use:D
