i basically charge $50 labor for any kind of mod plus the cost of pcb and cost of shipping back to you.

pcb's generally cost $30 and shipping is dependent on where you're from and how fast you want it back.

to do a dual mod without cutting into the casing for a switch you would use this pcb called an "imp" made by this guy named toodles on srk. the imp board controls the switching between ps3/360 control by pressing a button on the stick (generally the guide/home button) when plugging into a console.

Wow thanks for all the info and pics. Nice clean work. Pricing sounds good too. Just a couple more questions, first do I need to order the parts and ship them to you or do you handle that? Second, what city/state would I be shipping them to so I can get an idea of what shipping is going to set me back. Thanks.

if it's just pcbs, i can order those for you. stuff like joysticks/buttons i recommend ordering yourself and having them shipped to yourself since parts supply is so iffy these days and i don't like being a middle man over stuff that might take a month to come in.

i'm in california, 94526 is my zipcode. typically i ship usps priority 2-3 day or fedex ground 5 business days.

if anybody is in the bay area they are welcome to drop sticks off.

Awesome, I'm in the Bay Area. That just makes it super simple to cut out the shipping cost. I will definitely hit you up to do this soon. Thanks a lot for the info.

I'd be interested in the results of your experiment. I'm personally dying to use a GCN pad on the PS3, so I can play BlazBlue.

Oh god. I ordered all the PC parts and a J-PAC for the MAME setup that's going in my Egret II. I feel ill :lol So much money ... such a big chance of things going wrong.

I haven't built a PC in years. Something can and will totally go wrong.

Keep us posted (though I'm still going to check the blog). I'm mostly curious about seeing SFIV running on the Egret...if you are still going through with that.

so, to do something like this; what would be required? If I only had a TE for the ps3, would I need any 360 controller parts as well? This all is so new and fascinating for me...
 
Last weekend was trying to find some good X360 sticks from Akihabara, but dind't have any luck with that. There was a plenty of HRAP3s for the PS3, but for 360 they only had that shitty HORI EX 2. So I ended up buying some Sanwa parts and modding a MadCatz SE stick.

to handle the switching between pcbs you would need either the imp board i mentioned earlier or you would have to cut into the case to add a dpdt switch.

that's pretty much it.
 
So I was screwing around with my TE's innards and I managed to loosen a ground wire from it's solder point.
So I figure, might as well go through with this dual mod thing if I'm going to be doing some soldering anyway. Gamingnow seems to be out of imp boards. I guess PMing toodles at SRK is the best option?

It just got here!

I got the arcade stick when I woke up (literally, the FedEx delivery man woke me) and the gate just got here!

Awesome pic! Props to the Don A.K.A Yes Boss! Much love in here. BTW guys, I added a extra spring to my VSHG with some electrical tape around the end of the stick(To give it more widt And now it feels like a motherfucking HAPP stick! Nah Mean! Congrats on the stick though. I bought one stick at the beginning of July and upgrade to the TE by the end and it's a world of difference. I may eventually switch to a octagonal gate but I'm trying to get used to the square.

No, as was mentioned earlier , you'll need a common ground PCB from a licensed X360 controller. The Imp board is what allows for toggling between using it as a PS3 controller and a X360 controller w/o the need for an additional switch.

I wish MarkMan/MadCatz/Capcom/somebody would announce the new products soon - I'm definitely going to dual-mod a TE, but I'm not sure if I want to do it on the PS3 TE that I've been using, or the X360 TE that I have sitting around still sealed. The X360 + MC Cthulhu + Imp would definitely be the better choice since it allows for GCN/Wii functionality, but I may or may not keep depending on what else is coming. You hear that, MarkMan? HURRY UP AND TELL US. :D

I'm done buying HRAPs and Madcatz reskins, reduxes and remixes. Please a new, sexy design. Even more awesomer would be dual console. And maybe an agreement with several game companies so you can have swappable artwork for the customizing noobs (like me).

Don't wait, get the octagonal gate.

I rode that gate all day, goddamn, and I don't think I'll ever go back to a square gate. Only thing that is slightly difficult for me to pull off are srk/623 motions, but that's a welcome trade off for being able to do everything else with amazing consistency.

And, oh, the dangers of posting photos online. : ( I hope it gets buried soon enough, but I couldn't think of a quicker and more personal way of saying thanks.

Octos suck compared to square gates.

Octagonal gates have a larger throw, and it's annoying as hell reliably finding the corners. QCF motions are a bit smoother I guess, but have a much larger travel distance. No motion feels quick like with a square gate. Charge characters are hard as hell to play, and I couldn't even finish a combo in BB or SFIV if I had to hit a corner... shrug. Like 4 or 5 local guys ordered them, even though I told them they sucked, and the gates lasted all of 30 minutes in each of their sticks.

Depends entirely on your level of expertise.

Most people ride the gate. I personally depend on the corners as an audio/tactile signal that lets me know if I'm doing the proper motions. Introducing people to fighting games is also much easier on an octagonal gate.

I'd also like to point out that I put a good 2-3 hours into BB today, and nary a problem. I do believe you are exaggerating the negatives of an octagonal gate (restricted distances, uneven distribution of area) without mentioning the positives (easier to adapt to, audio/tactile cues, equal distance to every corner, smaller overall area to work with (+ or -, depending who you talk to).

I'd say if you aren't a hardcore fighter type, you'll appreciate and prefer an octagonal gate.

see i have no preference either way - i have an unmodded TE stick - ive heard that as long as you keep playing with one type u will get used to it - is this true? i cant be bothered ordering something to find out i shared the same opinion as you in the first place.

there must be a reason the japanese use the square gates in the first place right?

Not if you ever want to play a charge character. And it doesn't take more than a few days to get used to a square gate.

hey thanks! Yup those are the buttons, but I got them through akihabarashop.jp. The HRAP3 uses the purple clears, and I just got a shipment of orange clear (looks awesome) for the TE mod Im doing, soon to be posted in the pick-ups topic.

It's a good thing I don't play charge characters, then, although I don't see how it could be a hinderance.

Also, I've been playing with square gates for a few years.

I have never, ever gotten used to them.

For the person asking why Japanese players prefer square gates, here's the answer. There's an even distribution of areas: the middle gets 11%, the top right gets 11%, the top middle gets 11%, and so on. This is important because most Japanese players, and professional players in general, use small, quick motions when playing. They avoid touching the sides of the gate.

Personally, I need the audio and tactile cue to let me know if I've done the motion correctly, and the confidence gained from knowing exactly how I'm doing a movement outweighs the advantages of a square gate. Square gates just don't suit my play style at all.

interesting. I wouldn't mind taking on this project since I live really far away. Is it generally pretty easy to do? Anything I should know going in to it? I've never done any mods like this before, mind you.

LOL what?

Take SFIV and Balrog. You always want to keep a charge going. Use the headbutt to ultra for example. You want to charge down+back, and then go to up+back for the headbutt so you still keep your charge for the ultra. The square gate makes it easy to find a corner and then always stay there. And then when you go up+back the corner stops you making it easy to keep your charge for ultra. Octo gate not so much. Sounds like a hinderance to me. And it's not just charge characters. It's a problem anytime you need to find a corner no matter the character.

He said he couldn't see how they would be bad for charge characters... So I just pointed out a few facts why octos are bad. If he still wants to use one it is cool with me. I don't remember ordering him to get a new square gate and swap it out.
