love it :D

I've never been one to use sticks on console games... but I finally took the plunge yesterday on the SFIV TE stick through amazon's sale. I probably should have given this thread a quick read through beforehand.. but I'm assuming it will serve me well as my first stick.

All this modding is pretty much beyond me.. but I wouldn't mind doing some custom artwork for the thing. Is there a size template somewhere so I can get started before my stick arrives?

Where's that artwork from, by the way? Reminds me of Tekkonkinkreet, but I'm not quite sure...

you are right its Tekkonkinkreet but the manga. Its right there at the begining of the first chapter. I love Tekkonkinkreet ;O Black & White forever (thats why thos pics where black&white too btw.)

j/k. In all seriousness, easy easy fix. Here is what you do.

Thanks a lot for that, stick is all up and running and plays very nicely! I may post some pics later, but this thread has (for the most part) died :P Such a simple fix for what was a relatively small problem, I was scared I wasn't going to be able to light kick for a while there :lol

Just got the parts yesterday and did this last night. I messed up my alignment because I'm sick but I still don't think it looks bad :D Also my first mod on my first stick ever.

What's the general consensus on the HORI Real Arcade Pro EX? I'm trying to buy my first stick and I have no idea what I'm doing. I thought about getting the Tekken 6 Arcade Stick edition, but I don't know if the stick's any good. I also thought about the HORI EX 2, but I keep hearing people talk about how the parts are shitty and won't last you long.

Any help, guys? Not looking for an awesome stick, just something to get me started, that lasts long enough and isn't too expensive.

HRAPs EX are good sticks but their buttons are Hori, which feel cheap. I've replaced mine with Sanwa buttons. The actual stick is Sanwa, so it's very solid. I've replaced the standard ball top with a bat top. I'd get a MadCatz TE stick, since they cost around the same, but the TE stick has all Sanwa parts and a more attractive profile.

So my old Fighting Stick EX2 got some soda spilled into the buttons! Do I seriously have to desolder this fucker to clean it?

It's hard to get motivated to do so with the TE here, but it's nice having a second stick for guests or whatever.

The MadCatz stick is probably the best choice, I really don't want to go through the trouble of replacing buttons and so forth. 100€ seems to be reasonable for a stick too, especially with good parts.

Thanks.

I'm debating as to whether or not I want to swap out the square gate in my TE stick for an octo one. On the one hand, I hear the octo gate makes typical QCF motions a bit easier to execute, but on the other I hear that square gates ate better for any charging motions.

I don't really main as anyone (well, not yet. I'm way late to the party, I know.), and I'm not hardcore enough to have one stick with each or swap out the gate depending on who I want to play.

Opinions?

Octo might seem easier to learn if your new to joysticks but it has some disadvantages:

-It's worse for charge characters
-It's harder to go from a crouch block to standing block
-It's not common, so if you play on someone elses stick you'll mess up

QCF motions aren't an issue with square gates once you get used to them. It just takes some practice and you'll be better off for it.

Wrong, it's been stated NUMEROUS times it all comes down to preference. For example, I play VF and my shmups on a square gate sanwa stick, but for most of my fighters I rock a modified Sanwa stick(Extra spring to make it a little stiff, a few layers of electrical tape by the anchor to shorten the deadzone, and a octo-gate)

When CTF started getting japanese parts for their cabs in the late 90's, people hated them at first, but eventually people adapted. There's no advantage on playing on a octo or square, so kill that noise.

So...Gamestop (in store only) are selling MvC sticks for $99...What to do. It would be my first stick ever, not sure if should nab one or just start out with something cheaper(hori fs3 or something).

I think it's worth it. The size, the weight, the buttons, the joystick... They're all better than the Hori FS3. Although, if you have SERIOUS doubts about it, the Hori FS3 is a good starting point (especially if you can get it for real cheap).

Just know, if you end up liking sticks, you'd probably end up getting a TE or something... So my recommendation is to get the MvC stick :D

Ok...I've given this a lot of though the past hour or so...I will get the TE tomorrow...I figure, I could always resell it in the future and basically get my money back if I somehow do not like it.

Assuming the Gamestop isn't sold out(will call in morning). If it is, I'll just get a fs3.

OK, follow up question regarding the octo gate: Most of the criticism I've heard about them is that it makes it harder to find your diagonal directions since instead of nestling in a corner, there's just a flat edge that makes it more difficult to find and hold.

Now I've also seen that you can rotate a square gate to make the stick only move in 4 directions, is it possible to similarly rotate an octo gate so instead of a flat edge at each direction, there's a corner? Kind of like Nintendo's analog stick edges?

I suspected as much (It was a bit unlikely that a while community of arcade enthusiasts wouldn't have had that idea if it were possible), but it's good to have confirmation.

Spent a few hours breaking in the stick last night, and I was able to bust out most every move without difficulty with the exception of Cammy's Hooligan Combination and her on the ground Cannon Strike, but those I probably just need to practice on. Guess I'll stick with the square gate.

I play mostly Tekken and ive always played on a 4-way so im much more accurate with that especially doing diagonal, fast movements

Finally found a Gamestop with one of the MvsC TE joysticks. Picked it up for $50. after some credit I had in the store. Love the joystick ! It looks tiny compared to my custom made HAPPs.

OK, point taken. People will adapt to whatever they're given. My criticisms came from being used to a square gate and trying octo for a short time, but maybe I didn't give it a fair try.

That's fucking gorgeous, dude.

What hinders Hori from releasing the Vevlix? If it is better than the TE i am sure a lot of people will buy it.

As far as i know fighting game players tends to spend most of their "gaming-money" on sticks etc. Since the arcade stick is such a big deal for playing fighting games most people will invest in the real deal! I am sure the Vevlix stick would sell very good! Its not like its some freaking space rocket, its a couple of pounds of plastic for christ sake. Translate the manual and send em over here. Send em to europe too while you are it.

It's a niche collector's item and doesn't "perform" any better than any other stick with Sanwa parts. The type of people that would pay the premium for it as opposed to a <$100 TE are the same ones that already imported it.

Got my MvC TE. I had to traverse to the Gamestop in the ghetto to get it.

10 minutes with it now...holy moly. So fucking good.

I was scared, I heard people who couldn't even pull ultras off after hours of using their first stick. I'm doing it 95% of the time in my first 10 minutes :D

Okay, but what would make people pay a lot of money beside collectors editions etc. I mean, from a technical point of view. Are there more expensive parts than those in the TE? I mean do Sanwa and Seimitsu have some premium line? Would it be possible to make the cables better, etc. I mean the TE feels sturdy and solid but it can get even more sturdier with maybe like a metallic case. The place for the USB cable have a very cheap cover that almost feels like it gonna break when you close it when the cable is inside. Why not make buttons of ivory? heh (i dont know:/) just feels like there must be possible to develop the arcade sticks more make them better quality.

^^I don't know about "Premium", but the Sanwa OBSN-30 RGs are nicer and significantly more scarce than the OBSF-30s in the TEs, HRAPs, and VSHGs.

Sanwa manutactures a number of specialized levers that are more expensive than the JLF, like those $80 sticks in the Virtual On cabinets...

and they made an optical (switchless) lever that some people really like called JLHS Flash-1, which is now discontinued and kinda rare.

but yeah, the Premium Hori VLX sticks are typical JLF/OBSFs you'll find in TEs, HRAP SAs, and VSHGs

Typically, octo gates are used by Virtua Fighter players because it makes crouch-dashing easier to do (and technically, the same distance is between every direction and the center, making motions and such easier to do in VF).

In the USA, octo gate players are usually players that grew up on Happ sticks (because Happ sticks are always fully circle) since they are closer to being circle than square gates. Typically, those players grew up with riding corners when doing joystick motions, and you absolutely CANNOT ride corners on square gates (the stick will get stuck there).

I'm an octo gate player - I really dislike square gates, but hey.

I wish I could get my hands on a Sanwa Flash, but those sticks are pretty rare and require an additionnal power source (like the Happ Perfect 360s).

Wow, not even 2 hours playing and I think I am already almost as good with the stick as I am with a pad...and I've been using pads my whole life :lol.

Whats the deal with teh ＪＬＷ－ＵＭ－８－ＬＢ４５ seems 500 yen more expensive than the rest of the joysticks.

You're a natural. Now, aren't you glad you didn't get the FS3 :lol

I can't think of ANY VF players, myself included, that prefer an octo to a square. The only reason I ever see them use one is because they want a single stick for everything, play a lot of 2D stuff needing an octo and just deal with having one. That or the grew up on American sticks and couldn't adapt.

Timekillr,

If that were true, then Sega would have made the Virtua Stick High Grade with an octogate not a square gate. I'm both a Tekken and Virtua Fighter player and none of my japanese arcade sticks are modded with an octogate.

Once I get a chance I will post up pics of all the arcade sticks I own :D
