HRAPs EX are good sticks but their buttons are Hori, which feel cheap. I've replaced mine with Sanwa buttons. The actual stick is Sanwa, so it's very solid. I've replaced the standard ball top with a bat top. I'd get a MadCatz TE stick, since they cost around the same, but the TE stick has all Sanwa parts and a more attractive profile.Shikashi said:What's the general consensus on the HORI Real Arcade Pro EX? I'm trying to buy my first stick and I have no idea what I'm doing. I thought about getting the Tekken 6 Arcade Stick edition, but I don't know if the stick's any good. I also thought about the HORI EX 2, but I keep hearing people talk about how the parts are shitty and won't last you long.
Any help, guys? Not looking for an awesome stick, just something to get me started, that lasts long enough and isn't too expensive.
The MadCatz stick is probably the best choice, I really don't want to go through the trouble of replacing buttons and so forth. 100 seems to be reasonable for a stick too, especially with good parts.entrement said:HRAPs EX are good sticks but their buttons are Hori, which feel cheap. Mike M said:I'm debating as to whether or not I want to swap out the square gate in my TE stick for an octo one. On the one hand, I hear the octo gate makes typical QCF motions a bit easier to execute, but on the other I hear that square gates ate better for any charging motions.
I don't really main as anyone (well, not yet. I'm way late to the party, I know.), and I'm not hardcore enough to have one stick with each or swap out the gate depending on who I want to play.
Opinions?
Wrong, it's been stated NUMEROUS times it all comes down to preference. For example, I play VF and my shmups on a square gate sanwa stick, but for most of my fighters I rock a modified Sanwa stick(Extra spring to make it a little stiff, a few layers of electrical tape by the anchor to shorten the deadzone, and a octo-gate)thorin said:Octo might seem easier to learn if your new to joysticks but it has some disadvantages:
-It's worse for charge characters
-It's harder to go from a crouch block to standing block
-It's not common, so if you play on someone elses stick you'll mess up
QCF motions aren't an issue with square gates once you get used to them. It just takes some practice and you'll be better off for it.
NeoUltima said:So...Gamestop (in store only) are selling MvC sticks for $99...What to do. It would be my first stick ever, not sure if should nab one or just start out with something cheaper(hori fs3 or something).
Ok...I've given this a lot of though the past hour or so...I will get the TE tomorrow...I figure, I could always resell it in the future and basically get my money back if I somehow do not like it.Prototype-03 said:I think it's worth it. The size, the weight, the buttons, the joystick... They're all better than the Hori FS3. Although, if you have SERIOUS doubts about it, the Hori FS3 is a good starting point (especially if you can get it for real cheap).
Just know, if you end up liking sticks, you'd probably end up getting a TE or something... So my recommendation is to get the MvC stick![]()
Mike M said:OK, follow up question regarding the octo gate: Most of the criticism I've heard about them is that it makes it harder to find your diagonal directions since instead of nestling in a corner, there's just a flat edge that makes it more difficult to find and hold.
If the restrictor was 4-way there would be no diagonals.Noisepurge said:I play mostly Tekken and ive always played on a 4-way so im much more accurate with that especially doing diagonal, fast movements

When CTF started getting japanese parts for their cabs in the late 90's, people hated them at first, but eventually people adapted. There's no advantage on playing on a octo or square, so kill that noise.
That's fucking gorgeous, dude.daegan said:Just got the parts yesterday and did this last night. I messed up my alignment because I'm sick but I still don't think it looks badAlso my first mod on my first stick ever.

Now I've also seen that you can rotate a square gate to make the stick only move in 4 directions, is it possible to similarly rotate an octo gate so instead of a flat edge at each direction, there's a corner? Kind of like Nintendo's analog stick edges?
NeoUltima said:Wow, not even 2 hours playing and I think I am already almost as good with the stick as I am with a pad...and I've been using pads my whole life :lol.
TimeKillr said:Typically, octo gates are used by Virtua Fighter players because it makes crouch-dashing easier to do (and technically, the same distance is between every direction and the center, making motions and such easier to do in VF).
