NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread

@MarkMan I asked earlier and you seemed to ignore it, but I'll ask again. Whenever I use a code on checkout in the MadCatz store it doesn't take anything off. The page just refreshes.

Edit: Nvm it's working for me on another browser. :D

thanks man. i was just trying to get a general idea of the values. you have been extremely helpful. i will look into testing the board. it looks like just one wire. i think i am going to rewire that one wire and see if it works. i think i can figure it out. knowing my luck, i know just enough to be dangerous.

I checked mine after reading your post and I don't have anything like that happening with mine....and I've abused my stick like a red-headed step-child.

Do you store it near anything hot maybe?

Thanks... Not at all though, it's stored at moderate temperatures. It's weird that the "cable cubby" is a structural element supporting the face of the stick, considering it's just a big hole with a thin plastic frame around it.

You can see what I mean here, btw:

I need some advice before I go forward and do something...

Would the best place to sell (3) modded arcade sticks be e-Bay, Shoryuken Trading Outlet, or the Selling thread on NeoGAF??

E-Bay may technically get me the most money on a good day but the charges from the 'Bay can be outrageous to sellers, too.

My concerns abouuut SRK and NeoGAF are that as a seller I could get stuck holding the bag and making basically NOTHING on the wares that I'm selling. Seeing as how shipping has gotten ridiculously even in the United States alone I'm concerned that I may price things too low.

************

Getting away from this selling business and back to buying, have there been any rumblings from Hori about selling the Hori V3 SA sticks in the US???

The VLX looks nice -- if you're Paul Bunyan(!) -- but what about the leaner, doesn't take up a whole jetliner aisle stick????

I think after I get my Femme Fatale TE stick I'm going to fully switch it over to Seimitsu, I find I really like the feel of Seimitsu over Sanwa after playing SSFIV a ton on my HRAP EX-SE.

Gonna grab the translucent violet and translucent white buttons, and the violet bubble top for the joystick, should look really sweet!

Quick word of warning, the translucent Seimitsu PS-14 KNs feel quite different from the Seimitsu PS-14-Gs you like so much in the HRAP EX-SE. It won't be the same experience.
PS-14 KN have more convex plungers than PS-14 Gs and feel a bit less "springy"

Oh? Well thanks for the word of warning! I guess I'll need to rethink that then, I guess I can get the violet PS-14-Gs because while the look would have been cool to have it's the feel I was mostly concerned with.

It is a huge feel difference or just a little? Do they still offer more resistance than Sanwas?

_dementia said:
yep they're still way less feathery than Sanwa.
IMO the KNs actually offer more resistance than the Gs, which is a bit too much for me

Hmm...I might actually like those even more than the ones on the EX-SE. I think I'll pick them up! Prolly have to wait till next month though. :(

I'm expecting delivery of a Fightstick TE round 1. Quick question, can you unscrew the stick from the base? I'll be taking it round a friends pretty regularly, I assume that's the safest way to carry it.
Yes, that is possible but don't bother.

Good old backpack or a messenger bag will just do fine for carrying the stick around.

Can anyone please explain the difference in feel between octo-gate stick and square-gate sticks?

There's just certain things it seems I'll never be able to do consistently on a TE stick. I.e., Dashing. No matter how much I practice dashing in SF4, I often only get one forward input instead of two, because it seems the trigger is too close to neutral - so when I move the stick forward to trigger one forward input, then back to hit neutral so I can hit forward again.... I often don't move the stick back far enough. This causes me to move the stick forward twice, while only getting one input.

I've practiced myriad ways of holding the stick etc., etc, and without finding a remedy. Do you guys think an octo-gate would be better for someone like me?

Please don't say that ARRGH. I've literally sat in practice mode and just practiced dashing forward for hours. I'm beyond frustrated, because I know what my capacity for execution is in fighting games.

*Hates sticks, but have been using them for the past 5 months and is at the point of no return*

I need some advice.

I've never owned a stick before. In fact, the last time I've played on a stick was way back when MvC2 came out in arcades.

I recently picked up SSFIV, and have been playing on the 360 pad. I can pull off regular moves pretty good, but the supers and ultras are an entirely different outcome.

EB Canada has the MvC2 TE for $120 and I'm thinking of maybe going for that. I also wouldn't mind the regular SE either.

My questions are:

1. Is there any way to easily modify the Wii TvC SE to also work on the 360?
2. Do I jump in and get the MvC TE?
3. Is there any other suggestions?

I only know the answer for 1. You can dual mod that arcade stick if you want to use it for 360. I don't think it's easy to do though at least I'm not that good with it.

1. No, not really. It would require a padhack and a lot of work.

2. If you have the money, sure. It's an amazing stick and it's arcade quality right out of the box. Just be aware that the MvC TE has a slightly different layout than the standard TE stick does.

2. If you want the size of the Wii TvC stick, see if you can find a MadCatz SE stick. You can always upgrade it to arcade spec in the future if you want to.

I know the MvC TE buttons are laid out differently, but I can just map the buttons within SSFIV.

The problem with finding an SE is that there is none around these parts, and even if there was they cost $100. So, I guess the best thing is just to spend the extra $20 and go with the TE.

Yeah, the $20 difference isn't that big of a deal. You're going to love the stick, it's worth the money.

The only thing the oct gate does is reduce the throw distance on the diagonals and give distinct corners to up/down/left/right. It will only help if you go full throw on rolling motions. If you're an ideal player you'd never go full throw on those so the choice of gate wouldn't matter, but we can't all be Umehara Daigos. :lol

You might want to look at a stiffer spring/joystick so it pushes itself back to neutral a little easier. Either way the type of gate won't affect that.

The gate shape shouldn't be affecting your dash performance.. an octo gate only changes the throw on the diagonals. I'm no arcade stick guru but you really shouldn't have to physically move the stick back to neutral. You might just need a stiffer spring.

I have no problems double-tapping with my TE, I just keep a very loose grip on the stick when I play and just use quick tap and release motions. Works like a charm.

EDIT: Same as above. Blarg

Hey everyone,

I've got two problems with both my Hori EX 2: Soul Calibur IV fighting sticks, and maybe some of you have run into them and could help me. I purchased them around two months after Soul Calibur IV came out and gave them no more than a week's worth of use. Today I purchased SSFIV and noticed that one of the buttons in the stick (the y-button) wasn't responding well unless I applied a lot more force than the other buttons would need. Is there any way to fix this?

Also, my 360 didn't recognize when I tried to plug the second arcade stick in, and all I could see was the green flashing lights in the X circle rotating without settling into P1, P2, etc. Any ideas how to solve this?

Thanks in advance! I just want to be playing SSFIV the correct way with all of you.

Figured out the second problem. Does anyone have idea of the first?

So I'm adding art to clear seimitsu buttons. Am I going to want to glue the art in there? I'd hate to see the art become misaligned and have to go in again and fix it.

You can always just rotate the button itself.

Well, they are locked in there pretty tight since they aren't snap-ins. They are threaded nut and bolt sort of things. All the clear seimitsus on my current stick don't budge an inch. The one that did forced me to open up the whole darn thing to retigthen it, the little bugger.

It seems that the inner button where the art is actually placed doesn't rotate independently of the outer casing. I'm the worst with glue and I always make a mess, so I am concerned with inviting it to the party.

I think I'm gonna apply custom art today. Thing is, I ride a bike. Would it be okay to curl up the lami-label in a tube?

what was the solution to the second problem? i had a problem the other day with my 360 recognizing a 2nd stick. the lights would just circle and never become the 2nd player controller. ended up having to play sfIV on the ps3 (knew there was a good reason i picked it up for ps3 and 360).

It seems the author preferred the slant/palm area of the VLX/V3-SA over the Mad Catz TE "S" extended palm rest area.

Also I don't get how the TE "S" and V3-SA got a 'DRAW' when it came to modding the stick. The TE "S" is by far the most customizable stick on the retail market in terms of aethetics AND mechanical modifications. They even picture the LS-32-01 being put into the TE"S"! You can't even put one of those easily into the V3-SA! LOL.

Nice pictures and comparison... I guess.

I can see why the author would think so. I actually agree. Especially on the more bothersome full panel TES.

This I can't agree with at all. The author must be misinformed.

Oh wow, friend translated some for me...

And, they didn't find the reasoning behind putting the start/back buttons on the back of the stick.

?

lol jpn.

If you watch the videos, you can hear how hollow the sticks are compared to the TE. Just sayin.

I'm sure they'll appreciate the start and select placement it if console tourneys like godsgarden ever increase in popularity over there. As it stands now I could imagine why they were confused. Perhaps the literature bundled with the stick should explain.

"In America, the American hand is massive, and smashes the buttons like a boxer does a punching bag. So that the crass and fierce American does not accidently pause the game (thus causing great shame to his family), the Start and Select buttons have been respectfully moved to the back."

or

"When using the stick on their lap, the well endowed American will press Start or Select with a flick of his massive penis."

I don't use that much, I find just about half that is suitable.

Why not try all three? Ebay is the only one that actually charges to sell. I just finished my custom Juri for the 360. I'm looking to sell it myself, but i'm in the UK so it's a smaller market for me.

As its a Juri theme, her eye lights up when you press start/guide or back heh.

I've been considering doing this with my 360 SE stick. How difficulty was the process?

Anybody have a preferred brand of vinyl dye/spray paint they use for sticks? I painted my modded SE with Krylon Fusion, but it's chipping and fading in places already.
